Epithelioid Fibrous Histiocytoma Involving Deep Dermis and Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue.

Epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma (EFH) commonly occurs in the superficial dermis and is typically surrounded by an epidermal collarette. Deep dermal or subcutaneous involvement in EFH is very uncommon. We present three cases of nodular EFH involving the deep dermis and adipose tissue that showed characteristic cellular features and ALK immunoreactivity typical of EFH. All three cases occurred in adults and were present on the trunk or extremities. The lesions ranged from 0.8 to 2.0 cm in size. Histopathologically, all cases exhibited deep dermal/subcutaneous nodules composed of epithelioid cel

Atypical ultrasonic manifestation of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in a female patient: a case report of hyperechoic type and reflection on diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND: The initial diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) can be extremely challenging in the absence of confirmatory pathological examination combined with immunohistochemical staining. Clinically, DFSP most frequently arises in the trunk, extremities, and head and neck region, while mammary DFSP is exceptionally rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old female presented with a two-week history of a right breast mass. Bilateral breast ultrasound identified a hyperechoic mass within the subcutaneous fat layer of the right breast, with no definite space-occupying lesion observed

[Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (Darier-Ferrand) of the abdomen: a case report].

Dermatofibrosarcoma is a rare skin tumor. Morphological characteristics can be misleading and unknown to most of physicians. Diagnostic delay may affect patient´s management and prognosis. We here report the case of a young patient with lesions protruding from the abdominal wall mistaken for benign cysts. X-ray examination revealed subcutaneous adipose tissue mass. This was suspected of being a fibrosarcoma. The mass was resected with a macroscopic safety margin. The anatomo-pathological study confirmed the diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma. Clinical and radiological follow-up examinations didn

Rapidly growing subcutaneous mass in an infant.

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign mesenchymal tumor of young children. It has a broad clinical differential diagnosis and is often clinically confused for vascular and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Recognition of the unique histologic features of FHI, a triphasic population of mature adipose tissue, mature fibrous tissue, and immature mesenchymal tissue, will ensure the correct diagnosis. In this report we present a case of this rare entity, including the associated clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings.

Giant lipoma in the thigh A case report.

UNLABELLED: Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumours; they are composed by mature lipocytes and are usually located in the subcutaneous tissue. They may occur at any place in which there is adipose tissue, most of them are found in the upper part of the body, especially in the trunk and neck, although they may also develop in other sites, including the hand. Most lipomas are small, weigh only a few grams, and usually the maximum diameter is smaller than 2 cm. Whereas, to be referred to as ''giant'', the lipoma must be at least 10 cm in diameter or weigh a minimum of 1,000 g. Beca

Autosomal-dominant familial angiolipomatosis.

Angiolipomas are among the most common benign soft-tissue tumors and usually present as solitary nodules; however, angiolipomas also may present as multiple subcutaneous nodules, typically on the arms and trunk of young men. Although multiple angiolipomas most often occur sporadically, a family history can be identified in a minority of cases. Familial angiolipomatosis is a rare condition with an autosomal-recessive transmission pattern that is characterized by multiple subcutaneous tumors and a family history of similar lesions, which are not associated with malignant neoplasms. We report a c

Skin conditions: benign nodular skin lesions.

Benign subcutaneous lesions are a common reason that patients visit family physicians. Lipomas are the most common of these lesions; they most often occur on the trunk and proximal extremities. Recent data show that as many as half of the fat cells in lipomas are atypical. Ultrasound is used increasingly to confirm lipoma diagnosis, but deep lesions should be evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging study or computed tomography scan to exclude involvement of underlying structures and/or liposarcoma. Small lesions can sometimes be managed with serial injections of midpotency steroids. Larger l

[Cellular fibrous histiocytoma: a clinicopathologic analysis of 27 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic characteristics of cellular fibrous histiocytoma (CFH) with emphasis on diagnosis and differential diagnosis. METHODS: Clinical and pathologic features were reviewed in 27 cases of CFH (encountered during the period from 2008 to 2012) along with outcome analysis. Immunophenotyping was performed with EnVision method. RESULTS: The patients included 13 males and 14 females. The age at presentation ranged from 15 to 61 years (mean, 34 years; median, 32 years). The tumor occurred in the extremities (n = 14), head and neck (n = 7), and trunk (n = 6). Histo

Novel method of minimally invasive removal of large lipoma after laser lipolysis with 980 nm diode laser.

Lipomas are the most common benign tumor of the soft tissue, often presenting as soft, mobile subcutaneous masses. These lesions are often removed for cosmetic reasons, although they may be removed secondary to considerable discomfort or paresthesias. The large majority of lipomas appear as small, solitary lesions that are best removed by surgical excision. However, surgical removal of large (>10 cm) or multiple lesions may result in significant scarring. Tumescent local anesthesia and liposuction of larger lesions has been successful in a number of cases although this technique can be hindere

Osteochondrolipoma: a subcutaneous lipoma with chondroid and bone differentiation of the chest wall.

Lipomas are the most common subtype of benign soft tissue neoplasms and can occur anywhere in the body. Differentiation into a diversity of mesenchymal elements, such as blood vessels, fibrous tissue or muscle, is a frequent event. However, the presence of bone or cartilage in these tumors is extraordinarily rare with very few cases reported in the head and neck area. We report a case of an 'osteochondrolipoma' of the chest wall, in a young individual, providing a rationale in support of this as a possible and distinctive histologic subtype of lipomas, as well as discussion in the differential

Stealth surgery: subcutaneous endoscopic excision of benign lesions of the trunk and lower extremity.

BACKGROUND: Benign subcutaneous lesions of the trunk are typically excised through overlying skin incisions, which can result in permanent, potentially disfiguring scars. We previously reported our experience with transaxillary subcutaneous endoscopic approach for removal of benign lesions of the neck. Here we report a similar approach for removing benign lesions of the trunk and lower extremity. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 4 consecutive subcutaneous endoscopic procedures for benign truncal and lower extremity lesions from November 2006 to October 2008. The lesions includ

Multiple spindle cell lipomas: a report of 7 familial and 11 nonfamilial cases.

Spindle cell lipoma, a variant of a benign lipoma, usually occurs as a solitary, subcutaneous, circumscribed lesion in the posterior back, neck, or shoulders of older men. Multiple lesions are exceedingly rare. To our knowledge, there have been no previous series reported of patients with multiple subcutaneous spindle cell lipomas. We examine the clinicopathologic findings of a group of patients with multiple spindle cell lipomas, including seven with a familial occurrence of this disease. The Soft Tissue Registry of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the consultation files of one of

Giant cell fibroblastoma: a report of three cases.

Three cases of giant cell fibroblastoma are presented. All three patients were boys younger than four years of age. The neoplasms involved the subcutaneous tissue of the back, perineum, and shoulder, respectively. The tumors were characterized histologically by a mixture of spindle cells and multinucleated giant cells in a myxoid or collagenous background and by the presence of irregular, sinusoidal spaces. All three patients had local recurrence, but all were tumor-free at latest follow-up.
