INTRODUCTION: Lipoma is a benign tumor of adipose tissue, most often located in the subcutaneous tissue or deep soft tissues. It is usually solitary, slow-growing, and asymptomatic. Giant lipomas (≥10 cm or ≥1 kg) are rare and may cause compression of blood vessels and nerves, restricted mobility, and cosmetic deformity. Genetic predisposition is associated with mutations in genes such as High Mobility Group AT-hook 2 (HMGA2) and Domain-Containing Preferred Translocation Partner in Lipoma (LPP). Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and imaging, including ultrasonography, CT, and, in diag

Epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma (EFH) commonly occurs in the superficial dermis and is typically surrounded by an epidermal collarette. Deep dermal or subcutaneous involvement in EFH is very uncommon. We present three cases of nodular EFH involving the deep dermis and adipose tissue that showed characteristic cellular features and ALK immunoreactivity typical of EFH. All three cases occurred in adults and were present on the trunk or extremities. The lesions ranged from 0.8 to 2.0 cm in size. Histopathologically, all cases exhibited deep dermal/subcutaneous nodules composed of epithelioid cel

BACKGROUND: The initial diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) can be extremely challenging in the absence of confirmatory pathological examination combined with immunohistochemical staining. Clinically, DFSP most frequently arises in the trunk, extremities, and head and neck region, while mammary DFSP is exceptionally rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old female presented with a two-week history of a right breast mass. Bilateral breast ultrasound identified a hyperechoic mass within the subcutaneous fat layer of the right breast, with no definite space-occupying lesion observed

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis (NLCS) is a rare benign cutaneous hamartoma characterised by the presence of mature adipose tissue within the dermis. We report the case of a woman in her mid-20s who presented with an uncomfortable progressively enlarging lesion over the gluteal region. Histopathological examination of a skin biopsy demonstrated mature adipocytes interspersed among dermal collagen bundles, confirming the diagnosis. The patient underwent surgical excision for symptomatic relief, with no recurrence at one-year follow-up. This case underscores the importance of clinicopa

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are the most frequent benign tumor. They have been described as soft, well-defined, slow-growing palpable masses, and classified as deep or superficial.
PURPOSE: To present the clinical and ultrasound findings of herniated superficial subcutaneous lipoma (HSL), located in pressure/support areas, not previously described.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A seven-year retrospective review was performed. Patients with a preoperative high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) diagnosis of HSL archived in the computational system and histological study information were selected.
RESULTS: A total

UNLABELLED: Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumours; they are composed by mature lipocytes and are usually located in the subcutaneous tissue. They may occur at any place in which there is adipose tissue, most of them are found in the upper part of the body, especially in the trunk and neck, although they may also develop in other sites, including the hand. Most lipomas are small, weigh only a few grams, and usually the maximum diameter is smaller than 2 cm. Whereas, to be referred to as ''giant'', the lipoma must be at least 10 cm in diameter or weigh a minimum of 1,000 g. Beca

INTRODUCTION: Lipofibromatosis is a rare fibro-fatty tumour with a predilection to involve distal extremities. It has only recently been described as a distinctive clinicopathologic entity, and subsequently only a few cases have been published in the literature. To address the clinicopathologic significance of this rare entity, we here describe a case of lipofibromatosis occurring on the left thigh of a Sri Lankan girl who developed a recurrence following excision.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old previously healthy girl of Sri Lankan ethnicity presented with a painless progressively enlargin

Benign subcutaneous lesions are a common reason that patients visit family physicians. Lipomas are the most common of these lesions; they most often occur on the trunk and proximal extremities. Recent data show that as many as half of the fat cells in lipomas are atypical. Ultrasound is used increasingly to confirm lipoma diagnosis, but deep lesions should be evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging study or computed tomography scan to exclude involvement of underlying structures and/or liposarcoma. Small lesions can sometimes be managed with serial injections of midpotency steroids. Larger l

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic characteristics of cellular fibrous histiocytoma (CFH) with emphasis on diagnosis and differential diagnosis.
METHODS: Clinical and pathologic features were reviewed in 27 cases of CFH (encountered during the period from 2008 to 2012) along with outcome analysis. Immunophenotyping was performed with EnVision method.
RESULTS: The patients included 13 males and 14 females. The age at presentation ranged from 15 to 61 years (mean, 34 years; median, 32 years). The tumor occurred in the extremities (n = 14), head and neck (n = 7), and trunk (n = 6). Histo

Lipoma is a common benign soft tissue tumor. This article describes a massive osteolipoma, an unusual lipoma that is fixed to the femoral periosteum. A 21-year-old man presented with a subcutaneous mass at the knee region, which had been present for more than 36 months, and a slight limitation of joint flexibility. On physical examination, a mass approximately 12×6×2 cm(3) in dimension was palpable beneath the skin at the knee proximal medial area when the knee was in flexion. The mass was ovoid, hard, nontender, well demarcated, large, subcutaneous, and relatively fixed to the femur. Medical

Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (US-guided FNAC) of regional nodal basins is increasingly incorporated into the national follow-up schemes of high risk melanoma patients. In this paper we describe an additional added value of US-guided FNAC in the detection and verification of subcutaneous/in-transit metastases. A patient presented with a long lasting, smooth, movable node, close to the scar of the primary melanoma, mimicking a lipoma in every clinical follow-up. Ultrasound at once suspected a metastasis. FNAC was performed within one day of sampling in an outpatient setting,

BACKGROUND: Benign subcutaneous lesions of the trunk are typically excised through overlying skin incisions, which can result in permanent, potentially disfiguring scars. We previously reported our experience with transaxillary subcutaneous endoscopic approach for removal of benign lesions of the neck. Here we report a similar approach for removing benign lesions of the trunk and lower extremity.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 4 consecutive subcutaneous endoscopic procedures for benign truncal and lower extremity lesions from November 2006 to October 2008. The lesions includ

We describe a girl with cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma on the buttock. The 16-year-old girl had a 2.5- x 1.5-cm subcutaneous tumor on the right buttock, which was slightly tender. The tumor appeared to be vascular and was, therefore, surgically excised. Histologically, the lesion was poorly circumscribed and was composed of differently sized blood vessels, smooth-muscle bundles, and mature adipose tissue. These histologic findings were consistent with those of angiomyolipoma, which commonly occurs in the kidney. Cutaneous angiomyolipoma, which is also known as cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma, is a

Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare, benign condition characterized histologically by increased numbers of eccrine elements, as well as numerous capillary channels. In most cases, EAH arises as a single lesion; however, multiple variants have been reported. We report a 35-year-old female patient with multiple, sudoriparous, subcutaneous nodules on the right foot, which showed typical histopathological findings of EAH, and vascular components of the tumor consisted of thin-walled dilated vascular spaces intermixed with spindle cells and some histiocytoid endothelial cells representing

In this paper, the authors offer a classification of benign fatty tumours of the upper limb. There are three histologically distinct types of fat cells: immature fat cells which give rise to lipoblastomas, mature brown fat cells which give rise to hibernomas and mature white fat cells which give rise to lipomas. Lipomas are the most common and they are sub-classified according to the anatomic site of fat cells into dermal, subcutaneous and sub-fascial lipomas; or tumours directly related to muscle, bone, synovium or nerve. Finally, the authors review 67 patients with benign fatty tumours of th

We report the second series of a new entity called "massive localized lymphedema in morbidly obese patients" (MLL), recently described in medical literature. Our 6 cases present additional locations as well as an association with hypothyroidism. Huge masses, of longstanding duration ranging from 9 months to 8 years, afflicted the thigh, popliteal fossa, scrotum, suprapubic and inguinal region, and abdomen of morbidly obese adults. Although clinical impressions were generally of a benign process, including lipoma and recurrent cellulitis, the possibility of a malignant neoplasm could not be eli

Two patients are reported with pleomorphic lipoma, a benign subcutaneous fatty tumor showing atypia in which histologic diagnosis may be difficult. The tumors are well circumscribed lesions, most commonly occurring in the neck and shoulder of middle aged men. An important histologic criteria is the presence of floret-like multinucleated giant cells embedded in a myxoid stroma. Pleomorphic lipoma may be confused with several malignant soft-tissue neoplasms, including myxoid malignant fibrous histiocytoma and variants of liposarcoma. It is important to establish the correct diagnosis to avoid un

Eight cases of T-cell lymphoma localized primarily to the subcutaneous adipose tissue are described, five of which were referred in consultation with a benign diagnosis having been made or suggested. All patients presented with 1-12-cm-diameter subcutaneous nodules, which preferentially involved the extremities in six individuals. Histologically, the lesions were reminiscent of panniculitis and were composed of a mixture of small and large atypical lymphoid cells (large cells predominated in four cases) infiltrating between adipocytes. Focally, sheets of tumor cells were found. Karyorrhexis, f

Three cases of giant cell fibroblastoma are presented. All three patients were boys younger than four years of age. The neoplasms involved the subcutaneous tissue of the back, perineum, and shoulder, respectively. The tumors were characterized histologically by a mixture of spindle cells and multinucleated giant cells in a myxoid or collagenous background and by the presence of irregular, sinusoidal spaces. All three patients had local recurrence, but all were tumor-free at latest follow-up.

Various salient histological features were rated from + to +++ in a semiquantitative evaluation of a series of 155 cases of fibrous histiocytoma. Relations between individual histological features, as well as between histological findings, localisation and size of lesions, and age or sex of the patient were tested statistically. Most impressive was an inverse proportional relationship between cellular and fibrillar densities: highly cellular fibrous histiocytomas chiefly showed little fiber formation. Accordingly, cases with marked fiber formation were distinguished by low cellularity. Based o
