Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that appears primarily in the pleura and rarely in intrapulmonary or endobronchial topography. The authors report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented obstructive respiratory symptoms for 4 years. The chest computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed an obstructive polypoid lesion located between the trachea and the left main bronchus associated with distal atelectasis of the left lung. A resection of the lesion was performed and, macroscopically, the mass was oval, encapsulated, and firm, measuring 2.3 × 1.7 × 1.5 cm. Histology r

UNLABELLED: Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumours; they are composed by mature lipocytes and are usually located in the subcutaneous tissue. They may occur at any place in which there is adipose tissue, most of them are found in the upper part of the body, especially in the trunk and neck, although they may also develop in other sites, including the hand. Most lipomas are small, weigh only a few grams, and usually the maximum diameter is smaller than 2 cm. Whereas, to be referred to as ''giant'', the lipoma must be at least 10 cm in diameter or weigh a minimum of 1,000 g. Beca

While liposarcoma is the second most common soft tissue malignant tumor, the molecular pathogenesis in this malignancy is poorly understood. Our goal was therefore to expand the understanding of molecular mechanisms that drive liposarcoma and identify therapeutically-susceptible genetic alterations. We studied a cohort of high-grade liposarcomas and benign lipomas across multiple disease sites, as well as two liposarcoma cell lines, using multiplexed mutational analysis. Nucleic acids extracted from diagnostic patient tissue were simultaneously interrogated for 150 common mutations across 15 e

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastomas are rare, benign, soft tissue tumors that occur primarily in young children. Treatment includes complete excision and surveillance for recurrence. Lipoblastomas can be indistinguishable from other benign lipomatous tumors and liposarcomas. Cytogenetic analysis can provide the definitive diagnosis in questionable cases, because benign and malignant lipomatous tumors exhibit specific nonrandom cytogenetic abnormalities. The purpose of the present study was to discuss the disease management and outcomes in a large contemporary group of patients with lipoblastoma.

The so-called "giant fibrovascular polyps" of the esophagus and hypopharynx typically present as sausage-like pedunculated structures that protrude into the lumen and cause obstructive symptoms. Most are cured by local resection but they may recur. Microscopically, they display an admixture of fibrovascular and adipose tissue that is coated by unremarkable squamous mucosa. Here, we report a case that had scattered hyperchromatic cells and lipoblasts within the adipose tissue component. In other anatomic sites similar appearing lesions have been interpreted as pedunculated liposarcomas/atypical

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign, encapsulated tumor arising from embryonic white fat. On histology they typically contain variably differentiated adipocytes, primitive mesenchymal cells, myxoid matrix, and fibrous trabeculae. The tumor occurs primarily in infancy and early childhood. It often occurs in the extremities and trunk, and rarely develops in the head and neck and other sites.
METHODS: Ten cases of histopathologically proven lipoblastoma presenting to our hospital during a 6-year period (2003-2008) were reviewed retrospectively for their clinical presentations, treatment,

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign neoplasm that usually arises in the kidneys, but may rarely originate in sites such as the retroperitoneum, liver and bone. It is characterised by an intimate admixture of blood vessels, smooth muscle and fat. This multiphasic composition allows for its recognition on ultrasound and CT scan examination. Metastases are exceedingly uncommon, and only one other case of metastatic extrarenal AML exists in the literature. Histological variants of AML such as epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) are considered to be locally aggressive. A unique case of an EAML of t

Myelolipoma is a benign tumor that occurs in the adrenal gland and rarely in extra-adrenal sites. Commonly, it is diagnosed as an incidental finding. However, some reports indicate synchronous occurrence with other lesions including adrenocortical carcinoma. It has very rarely been reported to occur in association with adrenocortical adenoma. In this paper, we report three cases of adrenal myelolipoma associated with adrenocortical adenoma; in all three patients, the radiological appearance resembled adrenocortical carcinoma. These cases emphasize the importance of this combination as a pitfal

Angiomyolipoma is a benign tumor composed of varying proportions of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, and adipose tissue that most commonly occurs in the kidney. Sporadic lesions and lesions arising in the setting of the tuberous sclerosis complex have been reported in extrarenal sites. We present the case of an incidentally discovered angiomyolipoma in the anterior mediastinum. Thymoma was suspected clinically, and the lesion was composed mainly of spindled-to-epithelioid cells arranged in a histologic pattern reminiscent of hemangiopericytoma, a pattern that has been described in thymoma.

BACKGROUND: Dermolipoma is an uncommon benign tumor, congenitally occurring on the conjunctiva, and may be present at other sites. The appearance of dermolipoma closely resembles orbital fat prolapse and limbal dermoid, and therefore it is necessary to take this into account in diagnosis. Postoperative complications such as blepharoptosis, diplopia, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca can develop.
CASE REPORT: The first case was a 52-year-old female patient referred for the treatment of an orbital fat prolapse in her right eye. Another case, an 8-year-old female patient, was referred for the treatm

Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of mature lipomatous and hemopoietic tissue. Although it is often discovered as an incidental finding on imaging of the abdomen for some other reason or at autopsy, adrenal myelolipoma has been reported to present with symptoms such as flank pain resulting from tumor bulk, necrosis, or spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage. Myelolipomas are hormonally inactive but have also been reported to coexist with other hormonally active tumors of the adrenal gland. They are usually unilateral but may be bilateral and may also develop in extraadrenal s

Myelolipomas are benign tumours composed of haematopoietic tissue and mature adipocytes. They occur predominantly in the adrenal glands although rarely extra adrenal sites have been described. Their presentation and location can cause them to be easily confused with a malignant tumour. Here we present a myelolipoma in the paravesical space. To the best of our knowledge this location has not been reported before. The growing use of imaging will lead to an increase in incidence of these tumours. Understanding the natural history and their differentiation from other tumours is therefore important

Histopathological examination was performed on cutaneous biopsies from 900 dogs with skin lesions from Zimbabwe, collected from 1996 to 2000. Clinical data were collected from medical records. Sixty per cent (540/900) of the cases were tumours and 40% (360/900) were non-neoplastic inflammatory or degenerative diseases. Thirty different histological types of tumour were diagnosed. The prevalence of epithelial, mesenchymal, lymphohistiocytic and melanocytic tumours was 39.4%, 44.4%, 7.4% and 8.7%, respectively. The 10 most common tumours, comprising 73.7% of all cutaneous neoplasms, were mast ce

Angiomyolipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the kidney sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are uncommon, and the liver is the most common extrarenal site. Other sites reported include the bone, colon, heart, lung, parotid gland, skin, spermatic cord, gynecologic regions, and retroperitoneum. A case of an angiomyolipoma involving the right adrenal gland in a 49-year-old female patient with tuberous sclerosis is reported. The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features are also discussed. Only 2 cases describing adrena

OBJECTIVE: To define the clinical features and prognosis of patients with abdominal metastasis from primary soft tissue sarcoma (STS) at other sites.
METHODS: All patients with abdominal metastasis from STS were identified from the Royal Marsden Hospital Sarcoma Unit prospective database from January 1990 to July 2001.
RESULTS: Nineteen patients developed abdominal metastasis out of a cohort of 2127 patients (0.9%) evaluated during the study interval. The median age was 49 (19-71) years. The median time to abdominal metastasis from diagnosis of the primary was 27 (8-91) months. The presentin

UNLABELLED: Angiomyolipoma (AGML) is a rare benign tumour usually located in the kidneys, but it can occur also in other sites -- e.g. in the skeletal muscles. This location requires differentiation from sarcomas and angiomas. The aim of the study is to assess the diagnostic and therapeutic methods applied in the management of patients with AGML.
PATIENTS: five patients were treated for intramuscular AGML (1998-2001). Tumour localisation was as follows: intermediate head of vastus muscle of the femur, lateral head, medial head, occipital muscles of the head, and the interosteal muscles of the

Lipoblastoma, a rare benign tumor of adipose tissue, typically occurs in the superficial or deep layers of soft tissue on the trunk or extremities. Other sites of occurrence include the head, neck, and retroperitoneum. Lipoblastoma of the chest wall and parietal pleural have been reported, but occurrence within the lung has not been previously described. We report a case of pulmonary lipoblastoma in a young child presenting with complete opacification of the left hemithorax and mediastinal shift on chest radiograph. Lipoblastoma is a relatively rare tumor that occurs in infancy and early childhood and arises from embryonic white fat. Although a benign tumor, lipoblastomas tend to recur and may resemble myxoid liposarcoma. The authors report 26 cases over a 15-year period at Texas Children's Hospital. There was a slight female predilection (14F:12M). The most common symptom was a painless mass with or without increasing size. The trunk, extremities, head and neck, retroperitoneum, inguinal canal, peritoneal cavity, and lung were the tumor sites. Most tumors were circumscribed lipoblastomas and the minority

To assess a possible etiological role of organochlorine compounds in breast cancer development on Long Island, a high-risk region of New York State, concentrations of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in the adipose tissue of 232 women with breast cancer and 323 hospital controls admitted to surgery for benign breast disease or non-breast-related conditions. Seven pesticide residues and 14 PCB congeners were assayed via a supercritical fluid extraction method followed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. After adjustment for age and
