INTRODUCTION: Pseudomyxoma pleurii is a rare disease that is defined by the pleural extension of pseudomyxoma peritonei, usually secondary to a mucinous neoplasm of the appendix or ovary. It is characterized by diffuse mucinous deposits on the pleural surface.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old woman presented to the hospital with dyspnea, an increased respiratory rate, and decreased oxygen saturation. Following an appendectomy for a perforated mucinous appendiceal tumor eight years ago, the patient underwent multiple surgeries for the resection of mass deposits in the peritoneal cavity. At pre

Placental transmogrification of the lung (PTL) is a very rare benign lung lesion. There are only about 40 cases reported in the literature. The imaging and histological features of PTL cases in the publication are various, most of which are cystic and a few of which are solid. Being extremely rare, the solid PTL is unknown to major pathologists and surgeons. We reported a case of solid PTL in the anterior mediastinum. The patient was a 52-year-old male with no history of smoking and without symptoms. During physical examination, chest CT revealed a circular low-density lesion with a maximum di

Mammalian epithelia form a continuous sheet of cells that line the surface of visceral organs. To analyze the epithelial organization of the heart, lung, liver and bowel, epithelial cells were labeled in situ, isolated as a single layer and imaged as large epithelial digitally combine montages. The stitched epithelial images were analyzed for geometric and network organization. Geometric analysis demonstrated a similar polygon distribution in all organs with the greatest variability in the heart epithelia. Notably, the normal liver and inflated lung demonstrated the largest average cell surfac

Bacterial pleural infections are associated with high mortality. Treatment is complicated due to biofilm formation. A common causative pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Since it is distinctly human-specific, rodent models do not provide adequate conditions for research. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of S. aureus infection on human pleural mesothelial cells using a recently established 3D organotypic co-culture model of pleura derived from human specimens. After infection of our model with S. aureus, samples were harvested at defined time points. Histological

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an asbestos-related tumor originating in mesothelial cells of the pleura that poorly responds to chemotherapeutic approaches. Adult mesenchymal stromal cells derived either from bone marrow or from adipose tissue may be considered a good model for cell-based therapy, a treatment which has experienced significant interest in recent years. The present study confirms that Paclitaxel is effective on mesothelioma cell proliferation in 2D and 3D in vitro cultures, and that 80,000 mesenchymal stromal cells loaded with Paclitaxel inhibit tumor growth at a higher exten

Here we intend to document a rare case of PPB type III in a 2-year male presenting with an extensive tumor occupying the right hemithorax with immunohistochemical (IHC) study. Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare variably aggressive, dysodontogenetic, childhood primary intrathoracic malignancy which in up to 25% of cases can be extrapulmonary with attachment to the parietal pleura. It is found in pediatric population under 5 years of age. It was initially proposed as a distinct entity by Manivel et al. in 1988. PPB is a proliferation of primitive mesenchymal cells that initially form air-f

There is no denying that many revolutions took place in the fight against cancer during the last decades. However, cancers have always managed to find new ways to challenge humankinds. Variable genomic epidemiology, socio-economic differences and limitations of widespread screening are the major concerns in cancer diagnosis and early treatment. A multidisciplinary approach is essentially to manage a cancer patient efficiently. Thoracic malignancies including lung cancers and pleural mesothelioma are accountable for little more than 11.6% of the global cancer burden [4]. Mesothelioma is one of

Mesothelial tumours of the testicular/paratesticular region are uncommon, poorly characterised and difficult-to-diagnose lesions. They encompass entirely benign proliferations (adenomatoid tumour) and malignant, very aggressive tumours (mesothelioma) whose morphological features can be overlapping, highly variable and confounding. Moreover, testicular/paratesticular mesothelial tumours comprise relatively new entities with indolent behaviour (well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumour) as well as tumours which cannot be correctly included in any of the aforementioned categories and whose

Mesothelial to mesenchymal transition (MesoMT) is one of the crucial mechanisms underlying pleural fibrosis, which results in restrictive lung disease. DOCK2 (dedicator of cytokinesis 2) plays important roles in immune functions; however, its role in pleural fibrosis, particularly MesoMT, remains unknown. We found that amounts of DOCK2 and the MesoMT marker α-SMA (α-smooth muscle actin) were significantly elevated and colocalized in the thickened pleura of patients with nonspecific pleuritis, suggesting the involvement of DOCK2 in the pathogenesis of MesoMT and pleural fibrosis. Likewise, data

Pleural mesothelial cells (PMCs) can become myofibroblasts via mesothelial-mesenchymal transition (MesoMT) and contribute to pleural organization, fibrosis, and rind formation. However, how these transformed mesothelial cells contribute to lung fibrosis remains unclear. Here, we investigated the mechanism of contractile myofibroblast differentiation of PMCs. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) induced marked upregulation of calponin 1 expression, which was correlated with notable cytoskeletal rearrangement in human PMCs (HPMCs) to produce stress fibers. Downregulation of calponin 1 expression

Sialyl 6-sulfo Lewis X (6-sulfo sLeX) and its derivative sialyl 6-sulfo N-acetyllactosamine (LacNAc) are sialylated and sulfated glycans of sialomucins found in the high endothelial venules (HEVs) of secondary lymphoid organs. A component of 6-sulfo sLeX present in the core 1-extended O-linked glycans detected by the MECA-79 antibody was previously shown to exist in the lymphoid aggregate vasculature and bronchial mucosa of allergic and asthmatic lungs. The components of 6-sulfo sLeX in pulmonary tissues under physiological conditions remain to be analyzed. The CL40 antibody recognizes 6-sulfo

Mesothelial cells (MCs) play a classic role in maintaining homeostasis in pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial cavities. MCs work as lubricants to reduce friction between organs, as regulators of fluid transport, and as regulators of defense mechanisms in inflammation. MCs can differentiate into various cells, exhibiting epithelial and mesenchymal characteristics. MCs have a high potential for differentiation during the embryonic period when tissue development is active, and this potential decreases through adulthood. The expression of the Wilms' tumor suppressor gene (Wt1), one of the MC mark

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor arising from the mesothelial cells that line the pleura, pericardium, peritoneum, and tunica vaginalis. Imaging plays a primary role in the diagnosis, staging, and management of malignant mesothelioma. Multimodality imaging, including radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT), is used in a variety of scenarios, including diagnosis, guidance for tissue sampling, staging, and reassessment of disease after therapy. CT is the primary imagin

Only 5% of pleural neoplasms are fibrous tumors of the pleura, which typically develop from sub-mesothelial mesenchymal tissue of the visceral pleura. These tumors often behave clinically benignly, and when they are larger than 15 cm or occupy more than 40% of the hemithorax, they are referred to as "giant" tumors. Surgical excision is the gold standard treatment, although intra-operative bleeding is one of the major complications. In this case report, we discuss a 39-year-old female patient with a large homogeneous enhancing mass of soft tissue density in the right lower hemithorax with syste

Childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD) includes a heterogeneous spectrum of rare respiratory disorders in children associated with substantial morbi-mortality. Interstitial tissue, and other pulmonary structures, epithelium, blood vessels, or pleura are involved, resulting in a restrictive lung disfunction. Respiratory symptoms set in progressively and are often subtle, making thorough clinical history and physical examination fundamental. The etiology often is obscure. The clinical presentation mimics pneumonia or asthma, leading to a diagnostic delay. Challenging diagnosis may require g

Pleural mesothelial cells are the predominant cell type in the pleural cavity, but their role in the pathogenesis of pleural diseases needs to be further elucidated. 3D organotypic models are an encouraging approach for an in vivo understanding of molecular disease development. The aim of the present study was to develop a 3D organotypic model of the pleural mesothelium. Specimens of human pleura parietalis were obtained from patients undergoing surgery at the University Hospital Leipzig, Germany. 3D co-culture model of pleura was established from human pleural mesothelial cells and fibroblast

Pleural epithelial adaptations to mechanical stress are relevant to both normal lung function and parenchymal lung diseases. Assessing regional differences in mechanical stress, however, has been complicated by the nonlinear stress-strain properties of the lung and the large displacements with ventilation. Moreover, there is no reliable method of isolating pleural epithelium for structural studies. To define the topographic variation in pleural structure, we developed a method of en face harvest of murine pleural epithelium. Silver-stain was used to highlight cell borders and facilitate imagin

Introduction Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) primarily affect the interstitium, an alveolar wall tissue between the capillary endothelium and the alveolar epithelium. The term 'interstitial,' however, is misleading since alveolar spaces, peripheral airways, and vessels can be involved in most of these disorders. They often require a multidisciplinary diagnosis i.e., an integration of clinical, radiological, and pathological findings. A chest radiograph is relatively insensitive because of nonspecific patterns. Generally, these disorders can progress to irreversible pulmonary fibrosis and are

Pleural injury and subsequent loculation is characterized by acute injury, sustained inflammation and, when severe, pathologic tissue reorganization. While fibrin deposition is a normal part of the injury response, disordered fibrin turnover can promote pleural loculation and, when unresolved, fibrosis of the affected area. Within this review, we present a brief discussion of the current IPFT therapies, including scuPA, for the treatment of pathologic fibrin deposition and empyema. We also discuss endogenously expressed PAI-1 and how it may affect the efficacy of IPFT therapies. We further del

HIV prevalence in Kenya remains steady at 5.6% for adults 15 years and older, and 0.9% among children aged below 14 years. Parents and children are known to practice unprotected sex, which has implications for continued HIV spread within the country. Additionally, due to increased accessibility of antiretroviral therapy, more HIV-positive persons are living longer. Therefore, the need for HIV disclosure of a parent's and/or a child's HIV status within the country will continue for years to come. We conducted a qualitative phenomenological study to understand the entire process of disclosure fr
