Endosalpingiosis is a rare condition characterized by the presence of benign fallopian tubal-like glandular epithelium derived from Mullerian ducts, usually affecting the serosal surfaces of the pelvis and peritoneum. It is histologically differentiated from endometriosis as endosalpingiosis lacks endometrial stroma. Endosalpingiosis tends to affect older women and has been associated with ovarian serous tumors of low malignant potential. The extragenital endosalpingosis is typically without symptoms, reported only once as chronic pelvic pain. It rarely affects the appendix but can be mistaken

Endometriosis is a benign entity defined as the presence of endometrium tissue outside of uterine cavity. It is a common disease involving peritoneum, pelvic organs, gastrointestinal tract, and so on. Diagnosis based on cytology specimen can be challenge when we encounter increased cytological atypia in the glandular epithelium, with abundant inflammatory cells and debris in the background. We presented a case of deep rectal endometriosis mimicking rectal adenocarcinoma on cytology specimen and on MRI imaging studies. The combination of endometrial glands, cellular Mullerian stroma, hemorrhage

BACKGROUND: Postoperative abdominal adhesion remains one of the frequent complications after abdominal surgery and lacks effective intervention. Peritoneal mesothelial cell injury and healing play crucial roles in the process of adhesion formation, and identifying this mechanism might provide new insight into possible new therapeutic strategies for this disease. Transmembrane and immunoglobulin domain-containing 1 (TMIGD1) has been proven to protect renal epithelial cells from injury induced by oxidative stress and has also been identified as a novel adhesion molecule. Here, we investigated th

Life-saving renal replacement therapy by peritoneal dialysis (PD) is limited in use and duration by progressive impairment of peritoneal membrane integrity and homeostasis. Preservation of peritoneal membrane integrity during chronic PD remains an urgent but long unmet medical need. PD therapy failure results from peritoneal fibrosis and angiogenesis caused by hypertonic PD fluid (PDF)-induced mesothelial cytotoxicity. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms involved are incompletely understood, limiting identification of therapeutic targets. We report that addition of lithium chloride (LiC

Approximately 25% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients develop peritoneal metastasis, a condition associated with a bleak prognosis. The CRC peritoneal dissemination cascade involves the shedding of cancer cells from the primary tumor, their transport through the peritoneal cavity, their adhesion to the peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) that line all peritoneal organs, and invasion of cancer cells through this mesothelial cell barrier and underlying stroma to establish new metastatic foci. Exosomes produced by cancer cells have been shown to influence many processes related to cancer progress

BACKGROUND: Long-term peritoneal dialysis results in functional and histopathological alterations of the peritoneal membrane, leading to peritoneal fibrosis (PF). The mechanism of PF has not been fully elucidated, and at present there is no effective therapy for PF. Epimorphin is a mesenchymal protein that not only regulates morphogenesis in organ development but is implicated in tissue repair. However, the role of epimorphin in PF has not yet been clarified.
METHODS: PF was induced in C57/Bl6 mice by intraperitoneal injection of chlorhexidine gluconate (CG-injected mice) three times a week f

BACKGROUND: Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma (BMPM) is one of the rarest diseases in medicine with only more than 200 cases worldwide. This paper aims to report a case of Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma that strangely arose from the liver and was long treated as Hydatid cyst. The case also had many risk factors including asbestos exposure that had not yet been linked with Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 62 years old male with a history of a perforated peptic ulcer and a cystic mass in the liver that was misdiagnosed as

Postoperative abdominal adhesion (PAA) is one of the more universal complications of abdominal surgery with a frequent incidence. Currently available keratinocyte growth factor (KGF)-based glues for the prevention of adhesions remain a great bottleneck since their long-term biological activity in vivo is insufficient. In this study, we fabricated hybrid polydopamine (PDA)-KGF nanoparticles (PDA-KGF NPs) by using an in situ self-assembly and polymerization method. The physicochemical properties of the PDA-KGF nanoparticles were systematically characterized. The effect of preventing PAA in rats

Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbiota-produced metabolite, is accumulated in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. It is well known to contribute to CKD-related cardiovascular complications. However, the effect of TMAO on peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that serum concentrations of TMAO were positively correlated with C-reactive protein levels, and the appearance rate of dialysate IL-6 and PAI-1, in PD patients. During the follow-up period of 28.3 ± 8.0 months, patients with higher TMAO levels (≥50 μM) had a higher risk of n

In disease states, mesothelial cells are exposed to variable osmotic conditions, with high osmotic stress exerted by peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids. They contain unphysiologically high concentrations of glucose and result in major peritoneal membrane transformation and PD function loss. The effects of isotonic entry of urea and myo-inositol in hypertonic (380 mOsm/kg) medium on the cell volume of primary cultures of rat peritoneal mesothelial cells and rat kidney outer medullary collecting duct (OMCD) principal cells were studied. In hypertonic medium, rat peritoneal mesothelial cells activat

Multiple embryonic precursors give rise to leukocytes in adults while the lineage-based functional impacts are underappreciated. Mesodermal precursors expressing PDGFRα appear transiently during E7.5-8.5 descend to a subset of Lin- Sca1+ Kit+ hematopoietic progenitors found in adult BM. By analyzing a PDGFRα-lineage tracing mouse line, we here report that PDGFRα-lineage BM F4/80+ SSClo monocytes/macrophages are solely Ly6C+ LFA-1hi Mac-1hi monocytes enriched on the abluminal sinusoidal endothelium while Ly6C- LFA-1lo Mac-1lo macrophages are mostly from non-PDGFRα-lineage in vivo. Laparoscopic procedures require the creation of pneumoperitoneum. CO2, which must be cold and dry, is the standard gas used in such surgeries. The type of gas used, its temperature, and moisture may change the peritoneal surface and cause systemic and local oxidative stress. Our objective is to evaluate the influence of pneumoperitoneum heating on the occurrence of histological lesions in the peritoneum, inflammation, plasma oxidative stress, and on the mesothelial surface in patients undergoing video-assisted ovariohysterectomy. Twenty canine females were included and distributed evenly into

Ovarian cancer, one of the malignant gynaecological tumours with the highest mortality rate among female reproductive system, is prone to metastasis, recurrence and chemotherapy resistance, causing a poor prognosis. Exosomes can regulate the epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity of tumour cells, remodel surrounding tumour microenvironment, and affect tumour cell proliferation, invasion and metastasis. However, the function and mechanism of exosomes in the intraperitoneal implantation of ovarian cancer remain unclear. In this study, exosomal annexin A2 (ANXA2) derived from ovarian cancer cells was

BACKGROUND: Postoperative adhesion is a common cause of long-term morbidity after abdominal or pelvic surgery. The development of postoperative adhesion involves oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and collagen deposition mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that mitoquinone could be useful for the treatment of postoperative adhesion.
METHODS: A murine adhesion model was established by induction of peritoneal ischemic buttons. Mice received different doses of mitoquinone via the tail vein. All the ischemic buttons were dissected at 1 day and 7 days after surgery to investigate the effect of

Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare pathology that arises from the abdominal peritoneum. It has an affinity to develop on the surfaces of pelvic viscera. It predominantly occurs in women of reproductive age. The most used form of treatment is complete surgical removal. We report a case of a a 21-year-old female patient who presented with unclear diffuse abdominal pain. Transvaginal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen and pelvis revealed multiple functional cysts in the projection of the right and left ovary and free fluid in the pouch of Douglas. Laparosco

BACKGROUND: End stage renal disease (ESRD) has caused public health problem with high prevalence worldwide. Peritoneum from peritoneal dialysis patients with ESRD can induce pathological changes of the peritoneum, including fibrosis. The trans-differentiation of pericytes has been found to be closely associated with inflammatory diseases, such as organ fibrosis. However, the function of macrophages in regulating the transition of pericyte to peritoneal fibrosis is unclear.
METHODS: Histological examination was conducted using Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and Masson's trichrome staining

Surgical resection, the cornerstone of curative intent treatment for gastric adenocarcinoma, is associated with a high rate of infection-related post-operative complications, leading to an increased incidence of metastasis to the peritoneum. However, the mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an antigen from Gram-negative bacteria, represents a potential mechanism via induction of local and systemic inflammation through activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR). Here, we use both a novel ex vivo model of peritoneal metastasis and in vivo animal models

Most patients with ovarian cancer (OvCA) present peritoneal disseminated disease at the time of diagnosis. During peritoneal metastasis, cancer cells detach from the primary tumor and disseminate through the intraperitoneal fluid. The peritoneal mesothelial cell (PMC) monolayer that lines the abdominal cavity is the first barrier encountered by OvCA cells. Subsequent progression of tumors through the peritoneum leads to the accumulation into the peritoneal stroma of a sizeable population of carcinoma-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), which is mainly originated from a mesothelial-to-mesenchymal tr

We previously showed that mesothelial cells in human peritoneum express the water channel aquaporin 1 (AQP1) at the plasma membrane, suggesting that, although in a non-physiological context, it may facilitate osmotic water exchange during peritoneal dialysis (PD). According to the three-pore model that predicts the transport of water during PD, the endothelium of peritoneal capillaries is the major limiting barrier to water transport across peritoneum, assuming the functional role of the mesothelium, as a semipermeable barrier, to be negligible. We hypothesized that an intact mesothelial layer
