This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the anatomy of the retroperitoneal and abdominal fascias. We analyzed papers published in the past 70 years in the databases of Pubmed, Embase and Scielo. We excluded case reports, editorials and opinions of specialists. Studies were excluded if they lacked clear anatomical descriptions of the fascias, if full-text access was unavailable, or if they were published in languages other than Portuguese, English, or Spanish. This narrative review addresses the anatomical integration, surgical techniques, and functional importance of the fascia

Goblet cell adenocarcinoma (GCA) is a rare appendiceal neoplasm that typically metastasizes to the peritoneum and pelvic organs, with no reported gastric involvement. We report a 72-year-old man with multiple comorbidities presenting with recurrent small bowel obstruction. Imaging revealed a cecal and a gastric mass; colonoscopy confirmed poorly differentiated right-sided adenocarcinoma. Surgical resection with intraoperative biopsies identified high-grade appendiceal GCA infiltrating the cecum, mesentery, and gastric wall. Immunohistochemical staining showed cytokeratin 7 negativity and cytok

OBJECTIVE: Lymph nodes within the parotid gland (PG) are known as 1) an origin of Warthin's tumors and 2) a metastatic focus of nearby cancers. This study aimed to investigate factors that provide the specific features.
METHODS: Using histological sections from 28 human fetuses at approximately 15-31 weeks, we examined developing acini, ducts and lymph vessels (LVs) in the PG and compared the results with the other exocrine glands.
RESULTS: In the PG at 15-16 weeks, developing acini were embedded in a meshwork of LVs that corresponds to a major lymphatic route from the posterolateral head to

A presentation in septic shock with tense abdominal distension and left flank pain, combined with a plain radiograph showing massive subdiaphragmatic free air usually suggests perforation of a hollow viscus. A CT scan obtained before laparotomy was undertaken, showing gas destroying the left renal parenchyma with extension into the pararenal space and rupture through the posterior parietal peritoneum with an intact gastrointestinal tract. Laparotomy was thus avoided; pneumoperitoneum is not always gastrointestinal in origin.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of intraperitoneal Hypericum perforatum oil (St. John's Wort oil, SJWO) on systemic inflammation and peritoneal histopathology in experimental peritonitis.
METHODS: Forty-two male Wistar Albino rats were randomized into seven groups (n = 6): control, SJWO, olive oil, peritonitis, peritonitis + saline, peritonitis + SJWO, and peritonitis + olive oil. Peritonitis was induced with freshly prepared autologous fecal suspension, and treatments were administered intraperitoneally at 48 h. On day 5, plasma inflammatory markers, peritoneal thickness, and histopathologi

Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign, slow-growing tumor arising from embryonic neural crest cells that differentiate into the sympathetic ganglia. Accordingly, it can occur anywhere along the sympathetic chain, from the clivus to the sacrum, although it is seen most commonly in the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, adrenal glands, and neck. Although involvement at the sacral level is uncommon, ganglioneuroma typically arises from the anterior surface of the sacrum, with presacral lesions occasionally extending through the sacral foramina into the sacral canal. Only two cases of ganglioneuroma confine

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal spindle cell neoplasm (incidence ~1.4 per million). Although most SFT occur in the thoracic cavity, they can also arise in the retroperitoneum, pelvis, head, and neck. While the majority exhibit benign behavior, approximately 5% are associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, most notably Doege-Potter syndrome (DPS). DPS is characterized by non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia (NICTH) resulting from tumor hypersecretion of high-molecular-weight insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2), which saturates insulin and IGF receptors causing

BACKGROUND: Müllerian-type high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) most commonly originates from the fallopian tube, ovary, or peritoneum and usually presents with abdominopelvic disease. Thoracic presentation without a detectable abdominopelvic primary tumor is extremely rare and poses a diagnostic challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 60-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital after pleural thickening was detected during a routine medical checkup. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed left pleural thickening with mild pleural effusion. Thoracoscopic pleural biopsy was p

Urinary tract endometriosis is rare, and ureteral involvement is particularly insidious due to its asymptomatic nature. The absence of symptoms can lead to ureteral stricture, hydronephrosis, chronic kidney disease up to end-stage renal failure, and irreversible loss of kidney function. Diagnosis requires imaging methods to assess the degree of obstruction, while treatment involves surgical release of the ureter from endometriotic infiltrates to preserve organ function. Our observation illustrates the difficulty of establishing the etiology of a retroperitoneal tumor-like infiltrate leading to

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal neuroendocrine carcinoma(NEC) is primarily metastatic, with primary cases being exceedingly rare. The relationship between alpha-fetoprotein(AFP) and neuroendocrine carcinoma remains unclear. In this report, we present a patient with peritoneal neuroendocrine carcinoma who exhibited significantly elevated AFP levels. Extensive evaluation revealed no obvious primary site outside the peritoneum; however, occult gastrointestinal origin could not be entirely excluded. The tumor was thus classified as NEC of unknown primary, with a presumed primary peritoneal origin. The find

Platelet Factor 4 (PF4), a cationic antimicrobial peptide, serves as a ligand for the myeloid-specific phagocytic receptor CR3 (Mac-1, CD11b/CD18). We previously demonstrated that recombinant dimeric PF4 (rPF4) functions as a bacterial opsonin, enhancing phagocytosis of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and facilitating clearance of both antibiotic-susceptible and methicillin-resistant S. aureus in a mouse model of infectious peritonitis. In this study, we examined whether rPF4 is pathogen-agnostic by assessing its effect on phagocytosis of Gram-negative encapsulated Klebsiella pneumoniae, a

Hepatoid adenocarcinoma (HAC) is a rare, malignant, extrahepatic tumor with hepatocellular differentiation. HAC is often associated with elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations, which makes it difficult to distinguish from primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It is a difficult diagnosis based on histopathology, as the immunohistochemistry (IHC) profile often overlaps with hepatocellular carcinoma. HAC can arise from multiple organs, including the stomach, esophagus, colon, pancreas, duodenum, and peritoneum, with the stomach being the most common site. The treatment of HAC is

The utility of increased intraabdominal pressure to increase the efficacy of intraperitoneal was studied. All relevant studies published between 1996 and April of 2025 were reviewed. Six manuscripts from five different institutions were included for appraisal and data extraction. There was a single randomized trial in humans with all other data from rat or pig experiments. The pharmacokinetics of diffusion were determined to be unchanged by increased pressure. In all studies, the concentration of chemotherapy as it moved from the peritoneal space to the body compartment through the peritoneal-

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasms (PRMCNs) are rare tumors classified into cystadenoma, PRMCN with borderline malignancy (PRMCN-BM), and cystadenocarcinoma. We report a 60-year-old woman with left flank abdominal pain whose MRI revealed situs inversus totalis alongside a complex cystic lesion in the left retroperitoneum measuring 4.8 × 5.2 × 4.5 cm. She underwent laparotomy with complete resection of the lesion, and histopathology confirmed a primary retroperitoneal neoplasm with borderline malignancy, with an uneventful postoperative course and no recurrence after 8 months. The lack of established criteria for the assessment, classification, and staging of rare tumors of the female reproductive organs represents a significant challenge in gynecologic oncology. We propose potential approaches to the assessment of such neoplasms using the example of combined serous neoplasia of the peritoneum and fallopian tube. In an 84-year-old female patient with verified endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the corpus uteri, histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed combined neoplasia of the greater omentum and fallopian tube. Immunohistochemical examination revealed

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare histiocytosis driven by MAPK pathway gene mutations. Its clinical presentation is heterogeneous, and there is a shortage of data on natural history and prognosis. We aimed to characterise clinical presentation, associated conditions, treatments, outcomes, and determinants of prognosis in a large international Erdheim-Chester disease cohort.
METHODS: We conducted an international, retrospective, cohort study of patients with biopsy-proven Erdheim-Chester disease diagnosed between Jan 1, 1985, and Dec 31, 2024. Data were collected in ten countries b

Gastrointestinal metastases from breast cancer are uncommon and occur more frequently in invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), which exhibits a distinctive metastatic pattern involving the peritoneum, mesentery, and gastrointestinal tract. These metastases may present with nonspecific symptoms or with bowel subobstruction and obstruction, making diagnosis challenging, particularly in the absence of obvious intramural lesions on imaging studies. We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with a history of bilateral mastectomy for ILC who presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting suggestive

Atypical spindle cell lipomatous tumor (ASCLT) is a rare benign adipocytic neoplasm, and primary involvement of the retroperitoneum is exceedingly uncommon. Because its imaging features overlap with those of other fat-containing tumors, particularly atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (ALT/WDL), preoperative diagnosis remains challenging. We report a case of primary retroperitoneal ASCLT in a 58-year-old woman whose lesion was incidentally detected during a routine physical examination. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a small, well-d

BACKGROUND: Gastric signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) typically metastasizes to the liver and peritoneum. Although pulmonary metastasis occurs in approximately 15% of patients with advanced gastric cancer and typically presents as multiple well-circumscribed nodules on chest computed tomography (CT), diffuse ground-glass opacities (GGOs) as the predominant manifestation of SRCC lung metastasis are exceedingly rare. This pattern may pose a diagnostic pitfall by closely mimicking infectious or interstitial lung diseases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report two cases of gastric SRCC with pulmonary metas

Chronic expanding hematoma (CEH) is an uncommon lesion that gradually increases in size over time. A hemangioma is a benign vascular tumor that may involve the skin, mucosa, or visceral organs; however, involvement of retroperitoneal organs is rare. Herein, we describe the case of a 56-year-old woman with a CEH adjacent to the right ovary and multiple congenital hemangiomas involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, oral cavity, and liver. CEH was completely resected because it was suspected to be the cause of anemia and because an ovarian tumor or soft tissue sarcoma could not be excluded. In t
