Spontaneous lymphoma occurring in the retroperitoneum in a 13-month-old New Zealand Black female mouse, as transplantable to the same strain mice, was subjected to immunological studies by serial transplantation as subcutaneous solid tumor (66A) and bloody ascites tumor (66B). The transplanted tumor-bearing mice showed M component in the plasma, urine and ascites. It was confirmed as type K Bence-Jones protein. Speculations were made on the relation between abnormal immunity in NZB mice and lymphoma.

Improved scanning techniques, positioning, and adjustments in instrumentation have been developed on the basis of more than 1,500 ultrasound examinations of the upper abdomen and high retroperitoneum. The latest instrumentation was employed, including gray-scale signal processing and focused transducers. Since pancreatic abscesses are a highly lethal complication of acute pancreatitis, factors influencing the genesis of major peripancreatic infection (MPI) were analyzed in 330 patients with pancreatitis. MPI developed in 28 (8.5%). Management of MPI was reviewed in 35 patients, including seven admitted with MPI. Etiology and severity of pancreatitis influenced MPI frequency. In a group of 188 patients, 192 computed tomographic (CT) scans of the pancreas were done, and the diagnostic accuracy of CT determined relative to other modalities. CT was the most effective method of detecting neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. The full extent of the disease process, including involvement of the retroperitoneum and metastasis to the liver, was visualized with one examination. Calcification and cystic collections associated with pancreatitis were also clearly seen.

We present 2 cases of solitary cystic lymphangioma of the retroperitoneum. The non-specific clinical picture is demonstrated again but the pathologic features of both tumors are characteristic. Surgical treatment was successful in both instances.

Whole-body computed tomography (CT) was performed on 600 patients with known or suspected malignancy at the National Institutes of Health. This new diagnostic modality utilizes a finely columnated X-ray source mounted opposite a computer-linked detector bank to generate anatomic cross-sectional images of the body part being scanned. Ultrasonic demonstration of the anatomy and pathology of solid and fluid-filled organs and structures of the upper abdomen, the retroperitoneum and the pelvis is now well established, as is its use for examination of the thyroid gland, breast, the orbit, the heart, the scrotum and soft tissue masses. Aspiration of cytological and histological material for tissue diagnosis and other purposes is performed in a number of centres. Echography and computed tomography of the abdomen are complementary and there is a trend towards combined units so that each service may be used more efficiently.

One hundred smooth muscle tumors arising in the gastrointestinal tract and retroperitoneum were reviewed in an attempt to define criteria for the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma in these sites. On the basis of aggressive behavior, 56 of these neoplasms were diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. A total of 481 cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) presented in the literature have been reviewed. Ten additional cases from this hospital have been added. One etiological factor, methysergide, has been implicated in 12.4 percent of cases, but the majority remain unexplained. Lymphomatoid granulomatosis is a non-neoplastic lymphoreticular disorder that usually presents as primary lung disease. A case of lymphomatoid granulomatosis associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis is reported. The retroperitoneal fibrous tissue contained the same variegated lymphoreticular infiltrate that formed the lung tumor, suggesting that the disease may have begun in the retroperitoneum. An extensive immunologic evaluation of the patient revealed impaired cell-mediated immunity.

Of patients with acute pancreatitis (AP), there remains a group who suffer life-threatening complications despite current modes of therapy. To identify factors which distinguish this group from the entire patient population, a retrospectiva analysis of 519 cases of AP occurring over a 5-year period was undertaken. A series of 106 cases of hemangiopericytoma was analyzed. The neoplasms occurred principally in adults (median age, 45 years), were deep seated, and were most common in the thigh (27 cases) and the pelvic retroperitoneum (26 cases).
