Ganglioneuroblastoma is a rare neoplasm of adults. Some information about the natural history and response to therapy can be obtained from two cases seen recently at our hospital and 17 cases in the literature. These tumors occur in adults of any age and are usually located in the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, or neck. Evidence of the tumor may be present years before diagnosis. Elevations of urinary catecholamines were documented in three cases and the levels correlated with progression or resection of the neoplasm. During an investigation of soft tissue fibrohistiocytic tumors, seven cases were found which we believe represent a new and specific diagnostic subgroup of fibrous histiocytomas. A case if reported of a 2 1/2-year-old boy with an extensive filtration of the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and almost every organ of the body with a very primitive type of tumor identified as a poorly-differentiated mixed histiocyticlymphocytic lymphoma. The right atrium was completely filled with a large intracavitary metastasis which caused obstruction of the venous return to the heart with subsequent death.

Nine cases of known metastases originating from other metastatic foci were documented at operation. A review of the first 400 cases examined on one of three prototype EMI body scanners is presented. During the initial evaluation phases, it became obvious that computed tomography of the body has tremendous potential in the evaluation of various organs and disease states. The technique has been most useful in evaluating patients with known or suspected abdominal neoplasm, particularly lesions of liver, pancreas, retroperitoneum, and kidney. Too few cases have been studied to realistically quantitate its impact on the total field of medical diagnostic imaging.

Early experience with extracranial CT has shown this diagnostic method to be highly accurate in evaluating the liver, pancreas, kidneys, retroperitoneum, and pelvis. The diagnosis of neoplasm, inflammatory changes, and normal moophologic variants is possible. The effectiveness of radical hysterectomy depends upon the skill and the experience of the individual surgeon. A most important requirement of this operation is that it remove all of the cancerous tissue, while causing minimal damage to other structures. The data presented indicate that the use of suprapublic cystostomy, suction drainage of the retroperitoneum and closure with retention sutures of the abdomen can cause a statistically significant reduction in major postoperative complications that occur after radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy.

Four cases of malignant lymphoma all in male members of a family are described. In three of the affected individuals the primary tumor arose in the small intestine and in the other the site of origin was the retroperitoneum. This report presents the first autopsy case in Japan of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis which had developed in a 71-year-old man. The clinical course was of extremely long duration of more than 10 years. Malignancy was suspected on biopsy, and at one stage chylous ascites developed. Computed tomography has provided a new dimension in the roentgenologic evaluation of the abdomen. Normal structures not visible on conventional examinations are clearly identified. Abnormalities are recognized by their alterations in anatomic form or by their effect on tissue absorption values. Our early experience suggests that in the abdomen computed tomography will be most valuable in detecting lesions in those sites least accessible to conventional roentgenographic methods such as the liver, spleen, pancreas and retroperitoneum.

Sixty-four patients with complete occlusion of the infrarenal abdominal aorta were reviewed. The clinical findings, diagnostic procedures, and surgical management are described.
