Pathogenic SMARCB1 variants are associated with multiple Mendelian syndromes: Schwannomatosis (SM), Rhabdoid Tumour Predisposition Syndrome (RTPS1), and/or Coffin-Siris Syndrome (CSS). Although some data suggests genotype/phenotype relationships based on mutation type and location, this is not used consistently potentially due to inconsistent or absent phenotypic data. We used ClinVar, the largest public platform of variant classifications, to evaluate variant-specific data from clinical laboratories and cited publications to assess reporting consistency and genotype-phenotype relationships. BACKGROUND: The biology of osseointegration of any intramedullary implant depends on the design, the press-fit anchoring, and the loading history of the endoprosthesis. In particular, the material and surface of the endoprosthetic stem are designed to stimulate on- and in-growth of bone as the prerequisite for stable and long-lasting integration1-8. Relative movement between a metal stem and the bone wall may stimulate the formation of a connective-tissue interface, thereby increasing the risk of peri-implant infections and implant loss9-12. The maximum achievable press-fit (i.e., the force cl

The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) was advocated by Mitz and Peyronie in 1976. The concept of this superficial fascia was established by surgical findings of facelift surgery and is familiar to plastic surgeons and anatomists. However, detailed characteristics of this fascia are still not widely known among head and neck surgeons. Moreover, the SMAS is generally located at the parotid and cheek regions and divides facial fat into superficial and deep layers. The SMAS connects to the superficial temporal fascia cranially and to the platysma caudally. The frontal muscle and the per

The aim of this study was to obtain soft tissue thickness (STTs) of Caucasian males starting from 12 bone landmarks, to allow facial reconstruction and assign an identity to skeletal remains. When a skeleton is found without any circumstantial evidence of identity, through anthropological investigations it is possible to estimate age, sex, and race studying specific characteristics of bones. This first step of identification process helps investigators to narrow down the identity suppositions, but not always forensic analysis guarantees a final positive identification. Moreover, it is possible

Maxillofacial region is an anatomically complex area, representing a crossroads of different systems and apparatus. It is defined as the anatomical region lying on the facial skeleton from the inferior outline of maxilla up to an ideal plane passing through the skull base and the inion point, posteriorly. In this area, the digestive and respiratory systems connect to themselves and open in the mouth and sino-nasal cavities. Even the orbits with the ocular globes and their surrounding tissues lie in the same area. Despite the little exposed surface, the chance of penetrating injuries to this si

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this work was to describe the patient with severe injury within the splanchnocranium and neck connected with the penetration of large foreign bodies in his wood processing activity, and their impaction in soft tissues and life-threatening localisation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors describe the case of a 37-year-old male patient whose splanchnocranium and neck were injured while he was processing the wood with a mechanical saw. Two enormous wooden strips staved in his face while one was boring towards the nose and paranasal sinuses and the other was penetrating th

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction in the head and neck can be difficult owing to the size of the defect or characteristics of the tissue that needs to be replaced. Facial wounds or reconstruction sites can be subject to contamination, thereby risking infection of any implanted material even under ideal circumstances. Particular areas of concern are sites where minimizing the bacterial contamination prior to placing an implant is difficult (eg, the oral cavity and internal nose). Reconstruction involves the facial subcutaneous soft tissue and/or bone, and the ideal implant provides support and natural

Cervicogenic headache is a chronic, hemicranial pain syndrome in which the sensation of pain originates in the cervical spine or soft tissues of the neck and is referred to the head. The trigeminocervical nucleus is a region of the upper cervical spinal cord where sensory nerve fibers in the descending tract of the trigeminal nerve converge with sensory fibers from the upper cervical roots. This convergence of nociceptive pathways allows for the referral of pain signals from the neck to the trigeminal sensory receptive fields of the face and head as well as activation of the trigeminovascular

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), introduced in 1969 by Rosai and Dorfman, is a benign and self-limited (albeit often relapsing) pseudolymphomatous entity with characteristic histopathologic features. Although the presence of massive cervical lymphadenopathy often aids in the diagnosis of SHML, the disease may present in the absence of detectable nodal involvement (Rosai-Dorfman disease). Therefore, the physician must be aware of such extranodal presentations. A recent review of the 365 cases in the SHML registry has revealed a preponderance of eyelid and/or orbital invo

By definition, ultrasonography images the gross morphology of normal organs and of abnormal connective tissue structures. The site and demarcation of lesions, their topographical relations to other structures and the internal echo patterns are illustrated on the basis of seven clinical cases. The role of sonography in the diagnostic work-up is defined. The choice of treatment is determined by the early detection of a mass and its further appearance in terms of size and echogenicity. Sonography cannot replace histology. This is why so-called "typical" echo patterns may be misinterpreted. For fo
