Listeria (L.) ivanovii is a Gram-positive, facultatively intracellular rod-shaped bacterium. It is predominantly associated with animal infections, particularly in ruminants. Unlike L. monocytogenes, which is widely recognised as a major zoonotic and foodborne pathogen, L. ivanovii is often overlooked, despite documented cases of abortion, stillbirth, and neonatal septicemia in sheep, goats, and cattle. This review provides an overview of L. ivanovii taxonomy, microbiological characteristics, virulence determinants, host adaptation, epidemiology, transmission routes, diagnostic challenges, ant

To investigate the population structure of Acinetobacter baumannii in animals and the transmission pattern between humans and animals, we conducted a molecular epidemiological study by supplementing the data from poultry combined with data from 509 animal isolates and 2,218 human isolates in the NCBI GenBank database. Antibiotic susceptibility testing and genomic analysis showed that A. baumannii isolated from the brains of dead poultry embryos was universally sensitive to 19 antibiotics and genetically diverse. The pathogen has been isolated from 33 animal species from 17 countries worldwide.

H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) and avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are prevalent pathogens in the poultry industry, and their co-infection results in synergistic pathogenicity in chickens and significant economic losses. However, the direct interactions between H9N2 AIV and APEC during infection remain unclear. We preincubated H9N2 AIV particles with APEC and found that H9N2 AIV could bind directly to the surface of APEC. The H9N2 AIV-APEC complex enhanced bacterial adhesion to chicken embryo fibroblasts and chicken macrophages (HD11), which could be inhibited by antiserum a

Imipenem, a critical antibiotic for treating multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, now faces severe resistance from this pathogen. This study investigates the synergistic effects and underlying mechanisms of the combination of 2''-O-galloylhyperin with imipenem against P. aeruginosa. 2''-O-galloylhyperin showed no significant effect on the growth curve of strain 18102011 and its transconjugant D2011, while reducing the MIC of imipenem against this strain by 4-fold (FICI ≤ 0.5, synergy). This compound upregulates the citrate synthase gene gltA, and downregulates the aconitase gene acnA, e

INTRODUCTION: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a pathogen associated with healthcare-acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to beta-lactams and carbapenems. Although wild animals are not typically exposed to antibiotics, they can harbour resistant strains. The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is increasingly found in urban areas, where it interacts with humans and livestock. Studies have identified concerning levels of AMR in hedgehogs, including Extended-Spectrum β-Lactam (ESBL) and carbapenems-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains.
METHODS: This study focuses on Klebsiella

A total of 69 bacterial isolates representing 13 species were recovered from 60 tilapia and 14 water samples. Isolates were identified via phenotypic characterization, biochemical assays and VITEK MS, and antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method, followed by calculation of the multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index. Dominant taxa included Bacillus cereus (21.7%), Plesiomonas shigelloides (17.4%) and Enterobacter spp. (15.9%), while 11.6% remained unclassified, likely reflecting limitations of the VITEK MS reference database or insufficient spect

Ticks are major vectors of pathogens affecting livestock and public health worldwide. In Algeria dairy cattle are heavily infested by ticks, but the prevalence and diversity of spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia, emerging human pathogens, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to detect and characterize Rickettsia species in ticks collected from dairy cattle in northern Algeria. A total of 770 ticks were manually collected from cattle in three provinces (Blida, Medea and Batna) between 2024 and 2025. From these, 128 ticks were randomly selected for molecular screening. DNA was extracted

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen with increasing resistance to conventional antibiotics, necessitating novel antimicrobial strategies. The outer membrane integrity of most Gram-negative bacteria critically depends on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) transport (Lpt) system, which mediates LPS translocation from the inner to the outer membrane. In this study, we perform a structure-based virtual screen against the Lpt system of Acinetobacter and identify a somatostatin octapeptide analogue (termed C4) as a candidate hit. Notably, C4 demonstrates modest antibacterial activity but

BACKGROUND: Xenosurveillance, which uses blood-feeding insects as biological samplers, is an emerging non-invasive approach for monitoring pathogens circulating among humans, livestock, and wildlife. However, its application to livestock-associated bacterial pathogens at human-animal-wildlife interfaces remains underexplored. We investigated whether mosquito blood meals could be used to detect tick-borne bacterial pathogens circulating in livestock in Kenya.
METHODS: We collected 4673 mosquitoes, belonging to Culex, Anopheles, Aedes, Mansonia, and Coquillettidia genera around livestock enclos

The gut microbiome undergoes natural selection pressure, likely because it can affect infection resistance by stimulating natural antibody (NAb) production, notably against the glycan Galα1-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc-R (α-Gal). In our study, we explored whether particular glycans, such as α-Gal, from specific host microbiota components could trigger NAbs that, once ingested by Ixodes ricinus ticks during the blood meal, are capable of cross-reacting with bacterial strains in the tick microbiota that share these glycans. Such interactions might alter the tick microbiota and reduce Borrelia afzelii coloniza

The popularity of domestic cats (Felis catus) as companion animals is undisputed. However, the human-feline proximity poses potential health risks due to zoonotic disease transmission as well as physical injuries from bites and scratches. It is alarming to note that epidemiological data supports the prevalence and colonisation of Staphylococcus spp., including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the oral cavity of cats. Considering the problem of antibiotic resistance globally, this review collates recent findings on the role of cats as reservoirs of antibiotic resistant path

Infectious coryza (IC), caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum (Av. paragallinarum), imposes a substantial economic burden on global poultry production. This study established and standardized comparative challenge models employing infraorbital sinus injection and intranasal inoculation to evaluate the pathogenicity of Av. paragallinarum serovars A, B, and C in SPF chickens. Infraorbital sinus injection leads to rapid onset, stable incidence, and more severe disease progression. The clinical symptom scores at 1 days post-infection (dpi) were higher in the infraorbital sinus injection group comp

BACKGROUND: Bacterial cystitis, predominantly caused by Escherichia coli, is a leading cause for antimicrobial prescriptions in dogs. The use of antimicrobials contributes to selection pressure for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing concern for veterinary and public health. This study examined risk factors for resistance in urinary E. coli isolates from dogs in the United States, focusing on prior positive cultures and other host, socioeconomic, and geographic factors using data from a national commercial diagnostic laboratory. Associations between selected exposures of interest and AMR

Clostridioides difficile infections (CDIs) are becoming increasingly problematic in developing countries, further burdening healthcare systems. In Southern Africa, limited information is available on the prevalence and diversity of C. difficile strains in animals, food, and the environment. This review aims to provide insight into global findings on strain diversity, antibiotic resistance, and the epidemiology of C. difficile associated with food-producing animals, wildlife, and food processing environments. The review further explores the zoonotic and foodborne risk potential of the pathogen

As wild ungulates, including European bison, increasingly share habitats with livestock, surveillance of infectious zoonotic agents in their populations is essential for both wildlife and public health. This study aimed to screen for selected zoonotic pathogens in European bison from Poland. Samples (blood, ticks, and spleen) were collected from 86 animals. Serum was used for serological testing using commercial ELISA kits for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Brucella spp., and hepatitis E virus (HEV); ticks were analysed by real-time PCR targeting B. burgdorferi s.l., Anaplasma phagocytophilu

Macrococcus is a genus of Gram-positive cocci in the Staphylococcaceae family and a close phylogenetic relative of Staphylococcus. It is not a significant human pathogen but is known to widely colonize different environments, including animal skin and food products. Phylogenetically, Macrococcus is distinct from yet closely related to Staphylococcus, particularly the sciuri group. The species is effectively identified through such molecular markers as hsp60 and 16S rDNA. A key biochemical feature is an identified FAD-dependent oleate hydratase in Macrococcus equipercicus (M. equipercicus). Cri
