Evaluation of the efficacy of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli bivalent live vaccine (serogroups O 1 &2) against Escherichia coli infection in broilers.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) leads to significant economic losses in poultry farming by causing high mortality rates, reduced productivity, and increased antibiotic use. Licensed vaccines against avian colibacillosis are available but with limitations, and the immunological basis of protection remains ill-defined. In this study, a bivalent live vaccine based on the APEC O1 and O2 serogroups was developed. The results of animal experiments showed that compared with the non-immunized group, the bivalent vaccine immunized group showed a significant decrease in lesion score and colibac

Human Lactococcus garvieae Bloodstream Infection Complicated by Spondylodiscitis, Germany.

Lactococcus garvieae bloodstream infection in a woman in Germany resulted in spondylodiscitis and bioprosthetic mitral valve endocarditis. Six weeks of ceftriaxone followed by 10 days of doxycycline led to sustained clinical and microbiological resolution. This case highlights the need for thorough diagnostic testing and individualized, shared decision-making in infective endocarditis cases.

[Construction and analysis of a deep-coverage proteomic map of Mycobacterium avium based on high-resolution mass spectrometry].

Mycobacterium avium is an important zoonotic nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), and its continuously rising infection rate has posed a severe public health challenge. However, due to the incomplete annotation of protein-coding sequences in the reference genome and the absence of proteomic data for the type strain, the expression profiles of the proteins encoded by this bacterium remain poorly characterized. To address the gap between genome prediction annotation and protein expression, it is crucial to acquire systematic and reliable experimental evidence of proteins at the type strain level.

Comparative 16S rRNA Gene Amplicon Sequencing of the Fecal Microbiome in Pet Dogs and Cats of Different Breeds in Dhaka City, Bangladesh: With Preliminary Insights Into Zoonotic Relevance.

Dogs and cats are the most commonly kept pets, and the popularity of different breeds of them continues to increase in Dhaka City, Bangladesh. Pets naturally harbor a diverse gut microbiome that plays a significant role in digestion, immunity, and overall health. Although pets provide valuable companionship, their feces may occasionally harbor bacteria with zoonotic potential. However, little is known about the fecal microbial diversity and its zoonotic relevance in Bangladesh. This study investigated the diversity of pets' fecal microbiome using 16S rRNA metagenomics and explored the zoonotic

[Brucellosis part 1 - etiology, epizootiology, epidemiology, and laboratory diagnosis].

Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonosis characterized by a variable clinical presentation. The disease is endemic in many popular tourist destinations visited by Czech citizens. Approximately 300 cases of brucellosis are reported annually in Europe; in the Czech Republic, only a few cases are recorded each year, all of which are imported. The Czech Republic is free of brucellosis in livestock. However, Brucella suis still occurs in the country's wildlife, particularly in the European hare. Laboratory diagnosis of the disease relies primarily on serological tests, as direct identification of the pa

[Brucellosis part 2 - clinical diagnosis, treatment and a case report of the chronic form with retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy].

Brucellosis, one of the most important zoonoses worldwide, has been eliminated in many countries including the Czech Republic through veterinary control measures. It now occurs only as an imported disease. Owing to its non-specific clinical presentation, brucellosis is classified among the so-called "great imitators" and may overlap in the differential diagnosis with lymphoma, tuberculosis, or systemic inflammatory diseases. We present the case of a 44-year-old woman with imported chronic brucellosis who presented with prolonged fever of unknown origin, arthralgias, hepatosplenomegaly, and bul

Intranasal immunization with a P1 adhesin C-terminal-flagellin fusion protein elicits robust systemic and mucosal immunity and protects against Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in a mouse model.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is a major cause of community-acquired pneumonia. Rising macrolide resistance and limited preventive strategies highlight the urgent need for effective vaccines. A vaccine eliciting robust mucosal immunity is essential to block bacterial colonization and transmission. Here, we generated a recombinant fusion protein, KFD-P1C, by genetically fusing the immunodominant C-terminal region of the P1 adhesin (P1C) to KFD, a truncated non-pathogenic Escherichia coli K12 flagellin (KF) retaining TLR5 agonistic activity while exhibiting reduced intrinsic antigenicity

Metagenomic analysis of commensal small mammal samples from an international cargo shipping area, Bangkok Port, reveals potential zoonotic pathogens and implications for One Health surveillance.

Commensal small mammals, such as rats and shrews, are recognized reservoirs for numerous zoonotic pathogens; however, their role in pathogen circulation at transport hubs remains underexplored. This study employs shotgun metagenomic sequencing to characterize microbial communities and assess zoonotic potential in tissue samples from commensal small mammals captured at Bangkok Port, an international cargo shipping hub in Thailand between June and August 2025. Following host read depletion, taxonomic profiling was performed to identify bacterial taxa of public health relevance, including sequenc

Spotted fever Rickettsia and relapsing fever Borrelia in rodents from southern India.

UNLABELLED: Bacterial zoonoses constitute a significant proportion of emerging infectious diseases. Yet, the diversity and transmission cycles of many zoonotic bacteria remain poorly characterized, particularly in tropical, biodiverse regions where host and vector diversity are high, and the burden of zoonotic disease in human populations is substantial. In this study, we investigated the presence of five pathogenic bacterial genera-Rickettsia, Borrelia, Orientia, Leptospira, and Coxiella-in rodents from southern India. We detected low circulation of Rickettsia (7.26%), Borrelia (6.45%), and L

Streptococcus suis disease in Southeast Asia: microbiology and epidemiology in humans and pigs.

SUMMARYStreptococcus suis is a swine pathogen causing significant economic losses and an important zoonotic agent in humans. Southeast Asia is a high-incidence region, where infection is strongly linked to consumption of raw or undercooked pork and occupational exposure to pigs or pork products. Thailand and Vietnam report the highest case numbers, with additional cases in Indonesia (Bali), Malaysia, Singapore, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. Serotype 2 predominates in both humans and pigs, followed by serotype 14, while other serotypes (1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 16, 24, and 31) are also reported in humans. In pi

Development of a GFP-labeled Pasteurella multocida strain for in vivo organ infection tracing using a stable RCR-based genetic manipulation plasmid.

UNLABELLED: Advances in microscopy have enabled the widespread application of in vivo pathogen tracking approaches to bacterial pathogenesis. Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a major zoonotic pathogen causing severe respiratory diseases in livestock. However, genetic manipulation of clinical swine-derived isolates remains hindered by the lack of stable genetic tools. As a result, no genetically engineered in vivo tracking strain limits research in P. multocida infection dynamics. In this study, we evaluated diverse replication mechanisms and identified that rolling circle replication (R

A systematic review of pathogens in the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus): What about vector-borne pathogens?

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), once considered the most endangered felid species worldwide, has experienced a remarkable recovery through intensive conservation efforts. Its small population size and low genetic diversity render it particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases, including those transmitted by arthropod vectors. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current knowledge on pathogens investigated in the Iberian lynx, with a focus on vector-borne pathogens. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus, yielding 4
