Isolation and comprehensive characterization of a novel serotype D-specific lytic phage against Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida serotype D is a major pathogen responsible for severe respiratory disease in swine, resulting in substantial economic losses worldwide. The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance highlights the urgent need for alternative control strategies. In this study, we report the isolation and comprehensive characterization of a novel, strictly lytic phage, PGG01, that specifically infects P. multocida serotype D. Phage PGG01 is stable over a pH range of 5-9 and at temperatures up to 50 °C, reflecting conditions relevant to swine production environments. Host-range analy

Engineered OMVs of Salmonella displaying PlpE antigen provide effective protection against Pasteurella multocida infection in mice.

Pasteurella multocida is a major zoonotic pathogen that contributes to progressive atrophic rhinitis and the porcine respiratory disease complex in pigs, leading to significant economic losses in the swine industry. Current vaccines show limited efficacy and safety concerns. Here, we developed an OMV-based antigen display system using the signal peptide of OmpD derived from Salmonella Typhimurium to present the protective antigen PlpE. The engineered OMVs enabled surface localization of PlpE and were evaluated via intranasal immunization in mice. Immunization induced strong antigen-specific Ig

Isolation, characterization, and antibacterial activity of a novel Pasteurella multocida bacteriophage.

Pasteurella multocida is the main pathogen causing fowl cholera and poses a serious threat to the poultry industry. Current clinical control relies on antibiotics, but the prevalence of drug-resistant strains makes it urgent to develop new antibacterial strategies. In this study, a P. multocida-specific bacteriophage vB_PmuS_ZP41 was isolated and identified as a member of the family Siphoviridae by transmission electron microscopy. This phage showed lytic activity against 13 out of 19 clinical isolates of P. multocida (68.4%) and remained stable at 4-50°C and pH 3-9. The optimal multiplicity o

Gut microbiota in patients receiving dialysis: Mechanisms, complications and the road to personalized microbiome‑based care (Review).

UNLABELLED: In vivo evaluation of the immunotoxicity of xenobiotics is mainly carried out in rodents. Recent trends following the 3R (reduction, refinement, replacement) principle have driven development of in vitro methods for screening immunotoxic chemicals. The recently reported IMMUNOTOX-T immunotoxicity assay uses the human monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1, and evaluates potential immunotoxicity by profiling production of various cytokines by cells treated with test chemicals. Development of the assay involved small-scale evaluation of transferability, within-laboratory repeatability (W

Prognosis for surgical intestinal resection in inflammatory bowel disease refractory to medical treatment in a dog.

A 14-year-old spayed female Maltese dog had been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) via surgical biopsy and histopathologic findings. The dog had shown stable clinical control with prednisolone for 2 y but subsequently developed diarrhea, and serum albumin levels could not be adequately controlled. Despite titrating up the prednisolone dosage (1 mg/kg, PO, q12h), serum albumin concentration remained low and diarrhea persisted. Diagnostic imaging identified the underlying cause of the gastrointestinal signs as segmental eccentric small intestine wall thickening with homogenous hypo

Antibiotic Susceptibility of Zoonotic Bacteria Isolated From Oral Cavities of Indigenous Dogs From Semi-Urban Areas in Uganda.

Dog bites are a source of zoonotic infections to humans, such as pasteurellosis and meningitis. Zoonotic bacterial identification and their antibiotic susceptibility assessment are key towards the successful management of such infections. This study isolated and identified zoonotic bacterial species from the oral cavities of indigenous dogs and also determined their antibiotic susceptibility profile. Oral swab samples collected from 54 indigenous dogs (domestic [36] and stray [18]) were cultured on agar media, and then on selective-differential media. The colony morphology and conventional bio

Associations Between Delousing Practices and Pasteurellosis in Farmed Atlantic Salmon.

Infections with bacteria of the genus Pasteurella have increased in occurrence in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farms in Norway since 2018. This increase coincides with increased use of non-medicinal treatments against the parasitic salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, in the farms. Here, we analysed the statistical association between the use of non-medicinal delousing methods and pasteurellosis in salmon farming in western Norway, from 2018 to 2023. The analysed data covered 1161 production cycles from 356 farming localities, in which Pasteurella was detected in 166 production cycles from

Simulation of a field condition to evaluate the risk of enrofloxacin-resistant Pasteurella multocida strain selection in food producing rabbits treated via drinking water.

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurella multocida is a key bacterial agent involved in most respiratory disorders in rabbits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of selecting Pasteurella multocida strains resistant to enrofloxacin (ENRO) in food producing rabbits treated with ENRO via drinking water, according to the standard husbandry practices. Indeed, despite the EU community guidelines recommend a prudent use of antibiotics and promote new strategies to prevent bacterial diseases, antimicrobial therapy remains the primary approach for pasteurellosis management in rabbits. Therefore, the

Hemorrhagic septicemia in the United States: molecular characterization of isolates and comparison to a global collection.

Hemorrhagic septicemia-causing strains of Pasteurella multocida are endemic in Asia and Africa, but naturally occurring hemorrhagic septicemia has not been described in livestock in the United States since 1993. There are 5 capsular types of P. multocida: A, B, D, E, and F. Two capsular types (B, E) cause hemorrhagic septicemia, whereas capsular types A and, to a lesser extent, D are associated with enzootic bovine pneumonia. Here we describe 2 naturally occurring cases of hemorrhagic septicemia caused by P. multocida capsular type B:3,4 in the United States, including molecular characterizati

[Guidelines for the vaccination of cattle and small ruminants - a summary].

In cattle and small ruminants, vaccinations are one of the most important measures for preventing infectious diseases. Many animal diseases that caused tremendous losses in the past, such as IBR, BVD or FMD, have been eradicted through long-term vaccination campaigns. Regular vaccinations against these diseases could meanwhile be suspended and are now reserved for exceptional situations only under the auspice of competent authorities. The concept of core and non-core vaccinations, which has proven successful in companion animals such as small animals and horses, does not work for farm animals

Evaluating antimicrobial activity of selected medicinal plant extracts against pasteurellosis-causing bacteria in small ruminants.

Pneumonic pasteurellosis is a highly significant infectious disease globally, posing a major economic threat to small ruminants (SR) in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Although antibiotics have been effective in treating this disease, farmers in remote areas of Ethiopia often prefer traditional herbal medicines to manage respiratory infections in SR. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of crude extracts from three selected medicinal plants-Nicotiana tabacum, Psidium guajava, and Solanum incanum-against respiratory infections caused by Pasteurella multocida and Mannh

Can the epidemiology of zoonotic disease be studied in routine health records? A feasibility study of the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD).

Zoonotic diseases pose significant challenges to public health, creating substantial societal and economic burdens. Current surveillance systems rely primarily on laboratory-confirmed cases and statutory notifications, which may underestimate true disease prevalence. This study investigates the feasibility of using routine electronic health records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) as an alternative or complementary approach to zoonotic disease surveillance in the United Kingdom. The objective was to compare incidence of zoonotic diseases reported by Public Health England (PH

Pasteurella multocida Bacteremia in a Patient With Chronic Liver Disease.

Pasteurella multocida is a non-spore forming gram-negative organism characterized morphologically as coccobacillus. It is frequently isolated from the nasopharynx of domestic and wild animals, and is the most common cause of soft-tissue infection in humans following bites or scratches from dogs and cats. It is easily overgrowth by other flora in the sputum and may be regularly overlook, as it resembles Haemophilus influenzae, Francisella tularensis, and Yersinia pestis. The five species that cause the majority of pasteurellosis are: multocida, septica, canis, stomatis, and dagmatis. Pasteurell

Evaluation of a multi-epitope vaccine PME for Pasteurella multocida in mouse model.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is the pathogen responsible for swine pasteurellosis, which can impede their growth and even cause death, leading huge economic losses to the global pig industry. P. multocida can be divided into 5 serotypes, and existing vaccines have low cross-immunity protection. Therefore, developing a vaccine that can provide effective cross-protection is essential for preventing swine pasteurellosis and reducing the abuse of antibiotics. In this study, six dominant antigenic proteins of P. multocida (PlpE, OmpA, OmpH, VacJ, Omp87 and Cp39) were selected. Through bioin
