Lycopene nanoparticles deliver targeted improvements in broilers' performance, immune competence, antioxidant defense, and resistance against Pasteurella multocida infection.

Avian pasteurellosis induced by Pasteurella multocida is marked by suboptimal performance and elevated mortality rates in broilers. An innovative dietary intervention utilizing lycopene-NPs was assessed for its efficacy on growth performance, general well-being, immune system, antioxidant capacity, and resistance to P. multocida in broilers. Five equal groups consisting of 250 broilers were administered either a basal diet or diets enriched with lycopene-NPs at levels of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg and were experimentally infected with a multidrug-resistant and multi-virulent P. multocida strain at

Natural Attenuated Vaccines for Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is capable of infecting various animal species, causing hemorrhagic septicemia or infectious pneumonia, and it is widely prevalent and pathogenic worldwide. However, the prevention and control technologies for animal pasteurellosis remain relatively under-developed, with a heavy reliance on the traditional inactivated vaccines and live attenuated vaccines developed in the mid-20th century. A previous systematic review summarized research progress in the field of inactivated vaccines for animal pasteurellosis and revealed that inactivated vaccines exhibit high levels of ho

Th17 cells/IL-17A shape Pasteurella multocida serotype A infection in murine and rabbit models.

Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is an important zoonotic respiratory pathogen, especially serotype A, which can cause death in various hosts, including humans, farm animals, and wildlife. However, the exact mechanisms by which hosts mobilize the immune system against Pasteurella multocida serotype A (PmA) in mammals remain largely unexplored. In the present study, we found that the control of lung infection is critical for PmA infection. Furthermore, unbiased RNA sequencing analysis and histopathological studies revealed that T-cell associated immunity was not fully activated during PmA infection,

Important Diseases of Small Ruminants in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review with a Focus on Current Strategies for Treatment and Control in Smallholder Systems.

Sheep and goats are an important source of livelihood for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). These livestock are almost entirely managed by resource-poor, smallholder farmers and pastoralists. Despite the large number of sheep and goats in SSA, their productivity is low, mainly due to diseases, poor feed, and inferior breeds. This review aims to summarize the most important diseases in small ruminants in SSA, with a focus on current treatment and control strategies. The following diseases were identified as the most significant constraints for small ruminant farmers: helminthoses

The Inhibitory Effect of the Active Ingredients in the Bushen Huoxue Formula on the IL-17A Signaling Pathway and Its Alleviating Effect on Osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) stands as a prevalent degenerative disease worldwide. Despite the demonstrated therapeutic efficacy of the Bushen Huoxue formula (BSHXF) in treating OA, its underlying mechanism remains elusive. Network pharmacology is commonly employed for investigating drug-disease associations and processes. In this study, we employed network pharmacology alongside in vitro and in vivo experiments to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which BSHXF treats OA. METHODS: Based on the TCMSP database, active components of BSHXF were screened, and OA-related targets were retrieved

Identification, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vivo Detection of a Zn-Metalloprotease with Collagenase Activity from Mannheimia haemolytica A2.

Respiratory diseases in ruminants are a main cause of economic losses to farmers worldwide. Approximately 25% of ruminants experience at least one episode of respiratory disease during the first year of life. Mannheimia haemolytica is the main etiological bacterial agent in the ruminant respiratory disease complex. M. haemolytica can secrete several virulence factors, such as leukotoxin, lipopolysaccharide, and proteases, that can be targeted to treat infections. At present, little information has been reported on the secretion of M. haemolytica A2 proteases and their host protein targets. Her

Clinical features of pasteurellosis without an animal bite or scratch in comparison with bite/scratch pasteurellosis.

Pasteurellosis is a common zoonotic infection that occurs after an animal bite or scratch (B/S). We compared the clinical features of six patients with non-B/S pasteurellosis with those of 14 patients with B/S infections. Pasteurella multocida was identified with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry in all six non-B/S infections, whereas 13 of the 14 B/S infections were identified with diagnostic kits. The non-B/S infections were pneumonia (n = 3), skin and soft tissue infections (n = 2), and bacteremia (n = 1). Pneumonia occurred in two patients with un

Pathogenomic analysis and characterization of Pasteurella multocida strains recovered from human infections.

Pasteurella multocida is an upper respiratory tract commensal in several mammal and bird species but can also cause severe disease in humans and in production animals such as poultry, cattle, and pigs. In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing of P. multocida isolates recovered from a range of human infections, from the mouths of cats, and from wounds on dogs. Together with publicly available P. multocida genome sequences, we performed phylogenetic and comparative genomic analyses. While isolates from cats and dogs were spread across the phylogenetic tree, human infections were cause

Attenuated vaccine PmCQ2Δ4555-4580 effectively protects mice against Pasteurella multocida infection.

Pasteurella multocida type A (PmA) mainly causes respiratory diseases such as pneumonia in bovines, leading to great economic losses to the breeding industry. At present, there is still no effective commercial vaccine against PmA infection. In this study, a mutant strain (PmCQ2Δ4555-4580) with brand-new phenotypes was obtained after serially passaging at 42 °C. Whole genome resequencing and PCR analysis showed that PmCQ2Δ4555-4580 missed six genes, including PmCQ2_004555, PmCQ2_004560, PmCQ2_004565, PmCQ2_004570, PmCQ2_004575, and PmCQ2_004580. Pasteurella multocida activates Rassf1-Hippo-Yap pathway to induce pulmonary epithelial apoptosis.

Pasteurella multocida is an opportunistic zoonotic pathogen that primarily causes fatal respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia and respiratory syndromes. However, the precise mechanistic understanding of how P. multocida disrupts the epithelial barrier in mammalian lung remains largely unknown. In this study, using unbiased RNA-seq analysis, we found that the evolutionarily conserved Hippo-Yap pathway was dysregulated after P. multocida infection. Given the complexity of P. multocida infection associated with lung injury and systemic inflammatory processes, we employed a combination of cell c

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from different host species.

The spread of antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest challenges of our time, making it difficult to treat bacterial diseases. Pasteurella multocida is a widespread facultative pathogenic bacterium, which causes a wide range of diseases in both mammals and birds. In the present study, antibiotic susceptibility of 155 P. multocida strains were tested using the broth microdilution method to obtain the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for 15 antibiotics. The most effective antibiotics against pasteurellosis were ceftiofur, tetracycline, doxycycline, florfenicol and tilmicosin. Of

Causes of morbidity and mortality in wild cottontail rabbits in the eastern United States, 2013-2022.

Interest in causes of mortality of free-ranging, native North American lagomorphs has grown with the emergence of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2). Over the years 2013-2022, the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study received 119 Sylvilagus spp. case submissions from the central and eastern United States, comprising 147 rabbits. Most (86%) of these submissions occurred after detecting RHDV2 in the United States in 2020. Laboratory data from these rabbits were retrospectively evaluated for major causes, contributors to mortality, and pathogen detections. Gross and histologic
