An Atypical Case of Varicella Meningitis in a Young Immunocompetent Male Patient With a Possible Concomitant Case of Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a single-stranded enveloped RNA virus that is a common cause of chickenpox and herpes zoster. Herpes zoster (shingles) presents with a painful rash in a dermatomal distribution. Ramsay-Hunt syndrome (herpes zoster oticus) is a specific form of shingles, which occurs due to viral reactivation in the geniculate ganglion of cranial nerve VII. It can cause the triad of symptoms of ipsilateral facial paralysis, ear pain, and vesicles in the auditory canal or on the auricle. VZV is also a rare cause of aseptic meningitis, which occurs more commonly in immunodeficient

Erysipeloid Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the Old World: A Systematic Review.

Erysipeloid cutaneous leishmaniasis (ECL) is a rare presentation of cutaneous leishmaniasis that classically presents as erythematous, infiltrated lesions on the centrofacial region. We conducted a systematic review on the demographic characteristics, clinical presentations, laboratory findings, and treatment of ECL in the Old World. A systematic literature search was performed using the terms ("erysipeloid" OR "erysipelas") AND "leishmaniasis" across Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar. Only studies reporting cases from the Old World were included. Based on the anatomic

Histologic Clearance of a Giant Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Imiquimod 5% Cream: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is one of the most common skin cancers, with an increasing incidence worldwide. Chronic sun exposure is a major risk factor and lesions are usually observed on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, scalp, and hands. Imiquimod cream, an immune response modifier, has shown promising results in the management of selected cases of cSCC. CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old, Filipino male presented with 3-year history of a slow growing erythematous plaque on the abdomen. Physical examination revealed a solitary, well-defined, erythematous plaque mea

Cylindroma of the neck in a male patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cylindroma is a benign adnexal tumor mostly found on the scalp or face. They present as pink to purple, smooth-surfaced, solitary or multiple nodular lesions, mostly affecting middle-aged and elderly women. Reports of solitary cylindromas occurring in other anatomical locations are rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of a 56-year-old Arab male patient with a solitary, large, non-ulcerated cylindroma on the left-sided neck. The lesion had progressively enlarged since childhood, with worsening symptoms such as pain and a burning sensation over the last 2 years. A secon

Primary cutaneous follicle center lymphoma presenting as frontal fibrosing alopecia.

Primary cutaneous follicle center lymphoma rarely presents as macular alopecia and is typically characterized by solitary papules and nodules on the head, neck, and trunk. We report a 24-year-old woman with frontal alopecia that clinically resembled frontal fibrosing alopecia but was ultimately diagnosed as primary cutaneous follicle center lymphoma. The patient presented with pronounced alopecia over the left frontal scalp superimposed on milder bitemporal alopecia and intermittent symptoms of scalp irritation. Histopathologic examination of a scalp biopsy revealed a nodular lymphocytic infil

The Ponytail Lift: 22 Years of Experience in 600 Cases of Endoscopic Deep Plane Facial Rejuvenation.

BACKGROUND: During aging, the face loses volume with progressive sagging of the soft tissues, while the neck demonstrates skin laxity and muscle banding. The treatment of facial and neck aging usually involves a traditional facelift, which can cause noticeable scarring and distortion of anatomy. OBJECTIVES: Modern facelift surgery must avoid such shortcomings and still address aging in all layers of the face. To achieve this goal a novel surgical technique was developed and coined the "ponytail lift" (PTL). When global facial rejuvenation is indicated, this procedure is combined with neck ski

Chondroid syringoma of the nose: A rare case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A chondroid syringoma is an exceptionally rare benign lesion of the sweat glands also known as mixed tumor of the skin (MTS). It can occur in different areas of the head and neck such as the lips, cheek, nose and scalp (Gotoh et al., 2022 [1]). It is usually painless and grows slowly. Based on pathological features it can be differentiated into apocrine or eccrine (Mixed cutaneous tumor: chondroid syringoma a case report, 2019 [2]). CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient presented with a nasal lesion in the left soft triangle, progressively increasing in size. He did not

Post-traumatic pilomatricoma presenting as rapidly enlarging pediatric scalp mass.

Pilomatricomas (PM) are benign neoplasms that arise from hair follicle matrix cells. They are one of the most frequently excised pediatric skin masses. A typical clinical presentation is a slow growing, painless, firm, superficial mass in the head and neck of a child. We present a rare presentation of PM. A preschool aged girl presented with an enlarging scalp mass following a history of minor blunt trauma to the area. Two months prior, the child sustained a ground level fall and subsequently developed a painless "bump" at the site of injury on the scalp. The ``bump" was initially the size of

Management of Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Scalp: The Role of Imaging and Therapeutic Approaches.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common subtype of skin cancer. The scalp is one of the most frequently affected locations and is associated with a higher rate of complications, compared to other locations. In addition, it has a characteristic thickness and anatomical structure that may influence both growth pattern and treatment of primary cSCC; while clinical peripheral margins may be easily achieved during the surgery, vertical excision of the tumor is limited by the skull. Despite having a unique anatomy, current guidelines do not contemplate specific recommendat

Salvage of the cochlear implant in cases of skin breakdown over the receiver/stimulator in children.

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: Skin breakdown over receiver/stimulator (RS) after cochlear implantation poses a serious challenge. We report our experience using a one-stage reconstruction and implant salvage approach. RESULTS: Between the years 2005 and 2017 five children, all females, with congenital- bilateral sensorineural hearing loss were identified. In all cases, a temporoparietal fascia flap (TPFF) and a large scalp flap were used to provide a two-layer coverage to the exposed RS. In the first three cases, a split-thickness skin graft was used to cover the donor site defect. In the latter two

Fluorescence spectral analysis and logistic regression modeling for diagnosing basal cell carcinoma on head and neck.

The optical fluorescence method is distinguished by key features such as non-invasiveness, high sensitivity, and resolution, which are superior to traditional diagnostic approaches. Unlike histopathological examinations and biochemical analyses, optical diagnostic methods obviate the need for tissue sampling, enabling the analysis of virtually unlimited material. The research aims to examine the effectiveness of emission spectra analysis in the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the scalp and neck. The analysis was based on data provided by Specialized Hospital No. 2 in Bytom comprisin
