[MSB-52] Neonatal Thrombosis in Pediatric Patients: A Report of Two Cases.

This study presented the management of neonatal arterial thrombosis secondary to hypernatremia and breech presentation trauma. In the first case, an 18-day-old male born at 41 weeks gestation presented with ischemic left foot and absent peripheral pulses in both legs. Abdominal duplex ultrasonography revealed extensive aortic thrombosis from the infrarenal level to the lower extremity trifurcation arteries. An embolectomy was planned. Heparin infusion and hyperbaric oxygen therapy was administered to minimize the amputation level following the embolectomy. After consultation with the relevant

Segmental Pigmentation Disorder: A Case Report of Hypopigmented Patch.

A segmental pigmentation disorder (SPD) is a form of pigmentary mosaicism. SPD is a hypo- or hyperpigmented patch that has a segmental pattern. A 16-year-old male with an insignificant past medical history presented with symptomless, slowly progressive skin lesions since early childhood. Skin examination revealed well-demarcated, non-scaling, hypopigmented patches on the right upper extremity. A similar spot was located on his right shoulder. Wood's lamp examination showed no enhancement. Differential diagnoses included segmental pigmentation disorder and segmental vitiligo (SV). A skin biopsy

Needle contact test in auricular acupuncture for shoulder pain and where effective auricular acupoints identified are positioned on the map: A controlled study.

Active Points Test on auricle was renamed Needle Contact Test (or NCT), considered an extremely effective method to select most efficient auricle acupoint for Auricular Acupuncture (or AA) therapy. Our aims were to evaluate NCT efficiency as viable diagnostic option to identify the most appropriate AA acupoints to be selected for SupraSpinatus Tendinopathy (SST) associated shoulder pain treatment and to evaluate which auricle area has greater concentration of NCT positive acupoints in subjects with SST shoulder pain, comparing results with available AA ear maps. 45 subjects with SST diagnosis

An unusual presentation of spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma.

We report a rare case of spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma. Various presentations may occur, most commonly including neck pain, interscapular pain, radicular pain, and paralysis. This condition is frequently associated with paralysis and long-term disability. This case is unique because it presented with right hand cyanosis, in addition to pain. A 69-year-old Caucasian female presented with cyanosis of the right hand, and severe right upper extremity pain which awakened her approximately 11 hours earlier. The pain was exacerbated on extending her head. The patient further reported bilateral

[Research progress of optical motion capture technology in shoulder biomechanics].

The shoulder joint is the most flexible joint in the body with the largest range of motion, and the movement pattern is more complex. Accurate capture of three-dimensional motion data of the shoulder joint is crucial for biomechanical evaluation. Optical motion capture systems offer a non-invasive and radiation-free method to capture shoulder joint motion data during complex movements, enabling further biomechanical analysis of the shoulder joint. This review provides a comprehensive overview of optical motion capture technology in the context of shoulder joint movement, including measurement

Conversion of Upper-Limb Inertial Measurement Unit Data to Joint Angles: A Systematic Review.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have become the mainstay in human motion evaluation outside of the laboratory; however, quantification of 3-dimensional upper limb motion using IMUs remains challenging. The objective of this systematic review is twofold. Firstly, to evaluate computational methods used to convert IMU data to joint angles in the upper limb, including for the scapulothoracic, humerothoracic, glenohumeral, and elbow joints; and secondly, to quantify the accuracy of these approaches when compared to optoelectronic motion analysis. Fifty-two studies were included. Maximum joint mot

An Updated Surgical Approach of Using Flap and Cutaneous Nerve in the Lateral Arm to Reconstruct Complex Injuries of the Forearm and Hand: A Case Series Study.

BACKGROUND: Complex injuries involving the nerves and other soft tissues in the forearm and hand lead to functional and aesthetic defects. In such situations, multiple types of nerve autografts and flap donor sites are available. However, multiple donor sites cause donor morbidity in different locations and may lead to awkward operational positions. Therefore, based on the anatomical characterization, we aimed to modify the utilization of the lateral arm donor site for reconstruction, which restricts donor morbidity in the affected upper extremity. METHODS: We report a case series (N = 6) usi

Radial and Ulnar Forearm Free Flaps: A Critical Comparison of Donor-Site Morbidity and Its Impact on Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: A poor evidence basis exists regarding directly comparing objective and subjective donor-site morbidity associated with the forearm flap. The authors evaluated the postoperative donor-site complications and quality-of-life outcomes between the radial forearm free flap (RFFF) and the ulnar forearm free flap (UFFF). METHODS: All patients undergoing RFFF or UFFF harvest were included. Grip strength, pinch strength, wrist range of movement, and testing of skin sensitivity were assessed with the appropriate scales at different time intervals. In addition, appearance and quality of life

Dual Parallel Intramedullary K-Wires for Arthrodesis of the Finger Distal or Thumb Interphalangeal Joints.

OBJECTIVE: K-wire arthrodesis methods are commonly used during arthrodesis of the finger distal interphalangeal (DIP) or thumb interphalangeal (IP) joints. Here we propose an advantageous approach involving dual parallel intramedullary K-wires with the K-wire tips cut to bury underneath the skin. METHODS: From January 2017 to December 2021, 35 patients (43 joints) underwent finger DIP or thumb IP joint arthrodesis using this method. Radiographic outcomes were evaluated, while functional outcomes were assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and the Quick Disabilities of the Arm

Additional intraoperative subpectoral plane block vs conventional pain control: A comparison of shoulder movement in patients with mastectomy.

PURPOSE: Shoulder pain is common among mastectomy patients, with limiting shoulder mobility and negatively affecting their quality of life. Pectoral nerve blocks (PECs) have demonstrated efficacy in providing postoperative analgesia. We hypothesized that these nerve blocks could improve shoulder movement in patients undergoing mastectomy. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind controlled trial enrolled female participants diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled for mastectomy. Participants were randomly assigned to either the conventional analgesia group or the intervention gr

Ototoxicity associated with extended dalbavancin treatment for a shoulder prosthetic joint infection.

BACKGROUND: Dalbavancin is a lipoglycopeptide antibiotic approved for treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, administered as a single or two-dose treatment. The extended half-life, good penetration into bone and synovial fluid, and bactericidal activity against gram-positive bacteria, including those in biofilm, make dalbavancin an appealing choice for treatment of bone and joint infections in outpatient settings. However, we present a rare case of ototoxicity associated with off-label extended dalbavancin treatment of a prosthetic joint infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old man

Does hydrogen peroxide application to the dermis following surgical incision affect Cutibacterium acnes cultures in total shoulder arthroplasty in male patients? A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infections occur in 1%-4% of primary total shoulder arthroplasties (TSAs). Cutibacterium acnes is the most commonly implicated organism and has been shown to persist in the dermis despite use of preoperative antibiotics and standard skin preparations. Studies have shown decreased rates of cultures positive for C acnes with use of preoperative benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), but even with this positive deep cultures remain common. We sought to determine whether an additional application of H2O2 directly to the dermis following skin incision would f

Tranexamic acid in patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness: protocol for a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of tranexamic acid at reducing the recurrence of heterotopic ossification after open elbow arthrolysis.

INTRODUCTION: Exaggerated inflammatory response is one of the main mechanisms underlying heterotopic ossification (HO). It has been suggested that the antifibrinolytic drug tranexamic acid (TXA) can exert a significant anti-inflammatory effect during orthopaedic surgery. However, no prospective studies have yet investigated the effects of TXA on HO recurrence in patients following open elbow arthrolysis (OEA). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Here, we present a protocol for a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness of TXA on HO recurrence after
