Spontaneous regression of a giant uterine leiomyoma after delivery: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomas are hormone-dependent benign tumors and often begin to shrink after menopause due to the reduction in ovarian steroids. The influence of pregnancy on uterine leiomyomas size remains unclear. Here, we present a case of spontaneous regression of a giant uterine leiomyoma after delivery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old woman presented with multiple uterine leiomyomas, one of which is a giant uterine leiomyomas (approximately 8 cm in diameter) that gradually shrinked after delivery. At over two months postpartum, the large myometrial leiomyoma had transformed into

Characteristics associated with blood transfusion among women undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy: a National Surgical Quality Improvement Program study.

BACKGROUND: Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors that affect females. A laparoscopic myomectomy is the standard surgical treatment for most women who wish to retain their uterus. The most common complication of a myomectomy is excessive bleeding. However, risk factors for hemorrhage during a laparoscopic myomectomy are not well studied and no risk stratification tool specific for identifying the need for a blood transfusion during a laparoscopic myomectomy currently exists in the literature. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify risk factors for intraoperative and postoperativ

Family History and Uterine Fibroid Development in Black and African American Women.

IMPORTANCE: Uterine fibroids are an understudied condition, with earlier onset in Black than White women. Prior studies of the importance of family history on fibroid development are limited by reliance on hospital-based participant selection, poorly defined measures of family history, and nonsystematic fibroid assessment. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether family history is a risk factor for fibroid development using prospective ultrasonography data to identify incident fibroids and measure fibroid growth and standardized methods to ascertain family history. A Case of Cotyledonoid Dissecting Leiomyoma With Associated Disseminated Peritoneal Leiomyomatosis: The Significance of Frozen Section in Identification of This Unusual Entity.

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma (CDL) is a rare variant of uterine leiomyoma. The tumor is benign, but the appearance and growth pattern are unusual and alarming. Disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (DPL) is another rare tumor that can mimic malignancy. The occurrence of these two tumors in a single case is even rarer and has not been found in the literature to the best of our knowledge. We report a case of CDL with DPL in a 43-year-old Nepalese woman who presented with abdominal pain and per vaginal bleeding. Ultrasound showed a heterogeneous hypoechoic mass of size 25.1 × 15.5 × 9.4 cm

Non-persistent endocrine disrupting chemical mixtures and uterine leiomyomata in the study of environment, lifestyle and fibroids (SELF).

BACKGROUND: Results of studies investigating associations between individual endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and incidence of uterine leiomyomata (UL), a hormone-dependent gynecological condition, have been inconsistent. However, few studies have evaluated simultaneous exposure to a mixture of EDCs with UL incidence. METHODS: We conducted a case-cohort analysis (n = 708) of data from the Study of the Environment, Lifestyle and Fibroids (SELF), a prospective cohort study. Participants were aged 23-35 years at enrollment, had an intact uterus, and identified as Black or African American.

A Case Report of a Uterine Smooth Muscle Tumor of Undetermined Malignant Potential (STUMP): A Diagnostic Dilemma and Management Challenges.

Uterine smooth muscle tumors of undetermined malignant potential (STUMPs) are an uncommon kind of uterine smooth muscle tumor. It is distinguished by histopathologic and morphologic characteristics that are in between those of a benign leiomyoma and a malignant leiomyosarcoma. From a clinical standpoint, the clinical presentation of STUMP is similar to that of a fibroid. The diagnosis is usually confirmed after surgery. Here, we report the case of a 39-year-old woman who experienced increased menorrhagia, back pain, and pressure sensations during the past six months. She had a well-defined, fr

Combined oral contraceptive utilization and uterine fibroid incidence: A prospective study in a cohort of African-American women.

Published associations between combined oral contraceptive use and uterine fibroid development have lacked prospective imaging with ultrasound to distinguish between incident and prevalent fibroids. The Study of Environment, Lifestyle, and Fibroids prospectively followed fibroid-free, African-American women (the group with the highest disease burden in the U.S.) to identify incident cases. We examined associations between combined oral contraceptive use and the 40-month cumulative risk of fibroids. History of hormonal contraceptive use was collected via telephone interview at enrollment. Fibro

Induction of fibrosis following exposure to bisphenol A and its analogues in 3D human uterine leiomyoma cultures.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues (BPAF, BPS) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants used as plastic additives in various daily life products, with many concerns on their role as environmental estrogens. Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are highly prevalent gynecologic tumors with progressive fibrosis. Fibroids are hormone-responsive and may be the target of environmental estrogens. However, the effects of BPA, BPAF, and BPS exposure on uterine fibrosis are largely unknown. Here, we evaluated fibrosis and the crucial role of TGF-beta signaling in human fibroid tumors, the profibrotic effects

Bladder Leiomyoma in a 15-Year-Old Female Patient: A Case Report.

Bladder leiomyoma is a rare condition in pediatric and adolescent age groups, accounting for less than 1% of all bladder tumors, presenting a diverse array of histologic types and prevalence. Furthermore, bladder leiomyoma's prevalence is even more seldom with only five reported cases till the present day. Common presentation depends on the localisation and the affected layer in the bladder, urinary outlet or ureteral obstruction, irritative voiding symptoms, pelvic pain, and hematuria are the most common presentations of this condition. Diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up protocols in this e

The Differential Diagnosis of Abdominal Mass: A Case of Uterine Leiomyoma.

The most common benign neoplastic uterine tumors that grow monoclonally from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus are uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, which may occur as a single lesion or as multiple lesions with variation in size from microscopic to large macroscopic extent. The majority are diagnosed in the preclinical routine reliably, despite challenges due to the possibility of multiple differential diagnoses. Hence, this report highlights a case of a postmenopausal female of 53-year-old working as a staff nurse at the same hospital and who visited the outpatient department of obstetrics

Challenging Surgical Management of Giant Uterine Leiomyomas With Ileal Resection: A Clinical Case Study.

Uterine fibroids, or leiomyomas, are common benign tumors of the uterus, generally asymptomatic but potentially causing severe symptoms and complications in some cases, as demonstrated in this report. This case presents significant management challenges due to the fibroids' size, number, and location, including an unusual complication involving adhesion to the ileum. A 40-year-old female with a history of P2L1D1 and no significant comorbidities presented with three months of progressive abdominal pain and a rapidly enlarging mass resembling a 30- to 32-week gravid uterus and heavy menstrual bl

Combination of laparoscopy and open technique in management of large extravesical urinary bladder leiomyoma; a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Leiomyoma is a rare benign bladder tumor, classified into intravesical, intramural and extravesical types according to the location. Because of the difficulty of accurate preoperative diagnosis, resection is performed in the majority of the cases. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old Japanese man presented to the hospital with a chief complaint of abdominal swelling. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a large solid mass (20 cm in size) from the abdominal wall to bladder. The tumor was successfully removed by a combination of laparoscopic and open surgery. The

Large subserous uterine leiomyoma presenting as intraabdominal tumor: A case report.

Uterine leiomyomas are common benign gynecological tumors due to the overgrowth of uterine smooth muscle. Pedunculated uterine leiomyoma occurs when the mass is in continuity with the uterus with a stalk and may grow either within the uterine cavity or outside of the uterus and may mimic ovarian neoplasms or intraabdominal tumors. Presented is a 28-year-old woman with a progressive abdominal swelling in the past 9 months seen at the surgical outpatient of our facility. Preoperative CT suggested a diagnosis of an intrabdominal cystic. She had laparotomy and was offered myomectomies on account o
