Atypical Presentation of Pediatric Cat Scratch Disease: A Case Report.

Cat scratch disease is a zoonotic infection caused by Bartonella henselae and typically presents with regional lymphadenopathy and mild systemic symptoms in immunocompetent children. Atypical disseminated disease with visceral involvement is uncommon and may occur without classic clinical findings, leading to delayed diagnosis, particularly in patients with altered immune responses. We describe the case of an 11-year-old girl with type 1 diabetes mellitus who presented with persistent fever and progressive abdominal pain. Initial evaluation suggested streptococcal pharyngitis, and she was trea

Rickettsia typhi, Bartonella henselae, and related zoonotic agents in fleas from domestic cats (Felis catus) from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne rickettsiosis and bartonellosis are emerging diseases in humans and animals. There is increasing concern for the emergence of Rickettsia typhi (agent of murine typhus or flea-borne typhus) in humans of southern USA, for which cats are key reservoirs and cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) serve as the vector. Similarly, multiple species of Bartonella have cats as natural hosts and fleas as vectors, leading to varied disease outcomes in humans, including cat scratch disease and neurobartonellosis. METHODS: To investigate the ecology of Rickettsia and Bartonella pathogens,

Bartonella henselae mediastinal lymphadenitis mimicking malignancy with critical airway compression in a child: a case report.

Cat-scratch disease, caused by Bartonella henselae, is usually a self-limited infection presenting with regional lymphadenopathy in children. Thoracic involvement is uncommon, and mediastinal lymphadenitis with clinically significant airway compression may closely mimic malignancy. We report a previously healthy 6-year-old boy who presented with persistent fever, mild cough, weight loss, and cervical lymphadenopathy. Chest computed tomography revealed necrotic mediastinal lymphadenopathy forming a mass-like lesion with compression of the right middle lobe bronchus and associated atelectasis. B

Axillary cat-scratch disease: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Cat-scratch disease (CSD) typically presents as self-limited regional lymphadenopathy following a cat scratch or exposure. Its clinical features can mimic malignancy or tuberculosis, especially in elderly patients, leading to potential misdiagnosis. This report underscores the importance of considering CSD in elderly individuals with unexplained fever and atypical lymphadenopathy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 67-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of left axillary swelling, accompanied by pain and fever for 3 days. DIAGNOSES: Axillary CSD was confirmed based on clinical present

From Kitten's Claw to Vision Flaw: A Case of Pediatric Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Associated With Bartonella henselae Infection.

Central retinal artery occlusion is rare in pediatrics and typically linked to embolic or hematologic disorders. The authors describe a 13-year-old boy with acute central retinal artery occlusion and elevated Bartonella henselae titers following kitten exposure. Extensive evaluation was unrevealing, suggesting a rare inflammatory association between cat scratch disease and pediatric retinal arterial ischemia. The main take-away from this case is to also look for infectious causes, which are rare and not the first to be investigated for during central retinal artery occlusion.

Ocular Bartonellosis with Rapidly Progressive Choroidal Granuloma: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular bartonellosis most commonly presents as neuroretinitis, whereas choroidal granulomas are rare and poorly characterized. This case highlights a rapidly progressive, tumor-mimicking choroidal granuloma, expanding the clinical spectrum, and highlighting the importance of early recognition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old woman presented with decreased vision in the left eye and was found to have an elevated chorioretinal lesion with subretinal fluid, concerning for a choroidal neoplasm. Within 1 week, the lesion enlarged with significant visual decline. Serologic testing co

Beyond Suspected Appendicitis: Ultrasonography in a Child With Multifocal Lymphadenitis and Suspected Cat-Scratch Disease.

Ultrasonography is particularly useful in children because it can be repeated without ionizing radiation and can be adapted to the clinical question during the examination. A 10-year-old boy with right lower quadrant pain, right leg pain, and a limp was referred with suspected acute appendicitis. A comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound examination of the abdomen demonstrated a normal appendix and an enlarged lymph node corresponding to the site of right lower quadrant tenderness. During the examination, conversation with the patient and his mother disclosed household cat ownership, frequent expo

Clinical and epidemiological features of cat-scratch disease: a 16-year case retrospective study in a portuguese tertiary care centre.

PURPOSE: Cat-scratch disease (CSD), primarily caused by Bartonella henselae, is a well-recognized zoonosis with a broad clinical spectrum, in which atypical manifestations may delay diagnosis. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and epidemiological profile of CSD at a Portuguese tertiary care centre and to evaluate the role of molecular and serological methods as complementary tools. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including all patients with laboratory-confirmed CSD diagnosed at Unidade Local de Saúde de São João, Porto, between 2010 and 2025. Unmasking Bartonella henselae: A forgotten cause of hepatosplenic and marrow involvement.

Bartonella henselae is an uncommon but important cause of prolonged pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) and hepatosplenomegaly. Conventional diagnostic tools often fail in disseminated disease, leading to delayed or missed diagnoses. We report a 60-year-old man with PUO, progressive weight loss, and hepatosplenomegaly. Clinical suspicion, guided by significant cat exposure, led to molecular confirmation of B. henselae infection after conventional workup proved inconclusive. Liver biopsy revealed pleomorphic rod-shaped organisms on Warthin-Starry staining, while real-time PCR targeting the rpoB gen

First isolation and genomic insights of Bartonella henselae from domestic cats and dogs in Costa Rica.

Bartonella spp. are vector-borne zoonotic pathogens responsible for cat-scratch disease and several other human disease manifestations. Previous studies in Costa Rica have reported Bartonella DNA in ectoparasites and bats; however, data from companion animals remain limited. Here, we investigated the occurrence of Bartonella spp. in domestic cats and dogs and characterized the circulating strains using molecular, culture-based, and genomic approaches. Blood samples were collected from 152 domestic cats and 188 domestic dogs from different Costa Rican regions. Conventional polymerase chain reac

Erbin deficiency exacerbates sepsis‑induced liver injury through mitochondrial ROS/NLRP3‑mediated inflammatory responses.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a rare interstitial lung disease with a poor prognosis that currently lacks effective treatment methods. Preventing the acute exacerbation of IPF, identifying the molecular subtypes of patients, providing personalized treatment, and developing individualized drugs are guidelines for predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM / 3PM) to promote the development of IPF. Oxidative stress (OS) is an important pathological process of IPF. However, the relationship between the expression levels of oxidative stress-related genes (OSRGs) an

Claw lesions in dairy cattle pose a significant risk to dairy farmers worldwide in terms of animal welfare concerns and economic profitability. However, the use of different data sources, classification systems, and definitions of reference groups limits the comparison across herds and decreases the usability of the recordings for phenotypic and genetic analyses. In South Africa, information on claw lesions is not routinely collected by dairy farmers and data are limited to hoof trimmers recording lesions during preventative trimming or as needed by producers. Records of the most common claw l

CHCHD2 as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in lung adenocarcinoma: Insights from pan‑cancer multi‑omics and functional studies.

Helminths include both parasitic nematodes (roundworms) and platyhelminths (trematode and cestode flatworms) that are abundant, and are of clinical importance. The genetic characterization of parasitic flatworms using advanced molecular tools is central to the diagnosis and control of infections. Although the nuclear genome houses suitable genetic markers (e.g., in ribosomal (r) DNA) for species identification and molecular characterization, the mitochondrial (mt) genome consistently provides a rich source of novel markers for informative systematics and epidemiological studies. Disseminated Bartonellosis in a Kidney Transplant Recipient Complicated by Infection-associated Glomerulonephritis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat-scratch disease, which is characterized by self-limited regional lymphadenopathy with fever. However, visceral manifestations are possible, especially in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of bartonellosis in a kidney transplant (KT) recipient complicated by glomerulonephritis (GN) associated with the infection. A 52-year-old male who received a deceased-donor KT a year earlier presented to the emergency department with fever, malaise, and abdominal pain. Bottom-Up Proteomics Workflow for Studying Multi-organism Systems.

In recent years, discovery proteomics has emerged as a pivotal tool in biological research, especially when studying the intricate relationships among multiple organisms. To delve deeper into these interactions, we pioneered a bottom-up proteomics workflow. Using nanoLC-MS/MS and a label-free quantification method, this work specifically examines the differential protein expression in fleas (Ctenocephalides felis felis) that have been experimentally infected with Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of cat scratch disease (CSD). Our detailed methodology, from protein cleanup to data analys

Comparison of transcriptomic profiles between intracellular and extracellular Bartonella henselae.

The Bartonella genus of bacteria encompasses ubiquitous species, some of which are pathogenic in humans and animals. Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of Cat Scratch disease, is responsible for a large portion of human Bartonella infections. These bacteria can grow outside of cells, replicate in erythrocytes and invade endothelial and monocytic cells. We have previously reported reduced antibiotic susceptibility of intracellular Bartonella. In this study we performed comparative transcriptomic analyses between the extracellular and intracellular B. henselae phenotypes. Overall, specific
