Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a zoonotic infection primarily caused by Bartonella henselae following cat scratches. It typically presents with localized skin symptoms and self-limiting lymphadenopathy; however, in some cases, it can progress to disseminated lesions, leading to severe complications. We report a case of CSD with multiorgan involvement in a 79-year-old woman undergoing abatacept treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. She presented with persistent fever and painful right axillary lymphadenopathy, accompanied by induration on the right hand caused by a cat scratch. Imaging studies reve

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Warfarin is commonly involved in drug-related hospital admissions. The drug is most commonly prescribed to elderly patients in whom polypharmacy is common and, when administered in combination with other drugs such as NSAIDs, aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) or macrolide antibacterials, is associated with increased bleeding risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of prescriptions that might give rise to clinically relevant drug-drug interactions in a warfarinized population.
METHODS: Primary care prescribing of warfarin and potentially interacting

BACKGROUND: The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), a parasite commonly found on both dogs and cats, is a competent vector for several zoonotic pathogens, including Dipylidium caninum (tapeworms), Bartonella henselae (responsible for cat scratch disease) and Rickettsia felis (responsible for flea-borne spotted fever). Veterinarians recommend that both cats and dogs be routinely treated with medications to prevent flea infestation. Nevertheless, surveys suggest that nearly one third of pet owners do not routinely administer appropriate preventatives.
METHODS: A mathematical model based on weight

Transfer RNA (tRNA) modifications play a crucial role in maintaining translational fidelity and efficiency, and they may function as regulatory elements in stress response and virulence. Despite their pivotal roles, a comprehensive mapping of tRNA modifications and their associated synthesis genes is still limited, with a predominant focus on free-living bacteria. In this study, we employed a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating comparative genomics, mass spectrometry, and next-generation sequencing, to predict the set of tRNA modification genes responsible for tRNA maturation in two intr

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is an anthropozoonotic infection caused by Bartonella henselae, and it is one of the most common causes of lymph node infections in children and adolescents. B. henselae, belonging to the genus Bartonella, is a common human pathogen of human beings. CSD commonly develops as a result of cat scratches and bites or when injured skin comes into contact with cat saliva. The manifestation of CSD clinically differs for each patient based on their immune system. Individuals who have healthy immune systems generally manifest minimal clinical symptoms and do not necessitate any

BACKGROUND: Although Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of acute infective endocarditis (IE) in adults, Bartonella spp. has concomitantly emerged as the leading cause of "blood culture-negative IE" (BCNE). Pre-disposing factors, clinical presentation and kidney biopsy findings in Bartonella IE-associated glomerulonephritis (GN) show subtle differences and some unique features relative to other bacterial infection-related GNs. We highlight these features along with key diagnostic clues and management approach in Bartonella IE-associated GN.
METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of 89

OBJECTIVES: Bartonella spp., renowned for cat-scratch disease, has limited reports of dissemination. Tissue and blood cultures have limitations in detecting this fastidious pathogen. Molecular testing (polymerase chain reaction, PCR) and cell-free DNA have provided an avenue for diagnoses. This retrospective observational multicenter study describes the incidence of disseminated Bartonella spp. and treatment-related outcomes.
METHODS: Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of bartonellosis via diagnosis code, serology testing of blood, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood, 16/18S tests of bloo

BACKGROUND: Cats are the primary reservoirs of the bacterium Bartonella henselae, the main cause of cat-scratch disease in humans. The main vector of the bacterium is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. In southeastern Europe, data are lacking on the prevalence of B. henselae infection in cats, the strains of B. henselae involved and the risk factors associated with the infection.
METHODS: Blood samples collected in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-containing tubes from 189 domestic cats (156 pet cats and 33 stray cats) from Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia, and 10 counties throughout Croa

Cat scratch disease rarely presents as a breast or axillary mass mimicking carcinoma both clinically and radiologically. Diagnosing breast/axillary cat scratch disease is challenging due to its rarity and nonspecific findings. Here, we reported 2 patients with breast cat scratch disease and reviewed 14 patients with cat scratch disease involving breast/axilla from the past 30 years. It mainly affects women (median age: 48), consistently presenting as axillary lymphadenopathy, and demonstrates ipsilateral breast mass in half of patients (50%, 8/16). The breast mass was most commonly located in

Lymphadenopathy in an immunosuppressed patient raises the quintessential diagnostic dilemma: infection or malignancy? We present the case of a transplant recipient on anti-rejection prophylaxis admitted with acute fever, malaise and a swollen right axillary node. The patient had pancytopenia and tested positive for Epstein-Barr virus; nodal core biopsy demonstrated atypical plasma cell infiltration, immediately raising suspicion for post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. However, excisional biopsy and Bartonella henselae serology clarified a final diagnosis of cat-scratch disease-a pote

Bartonellosis refers to disease caused by the Bartonella genus of bacteria. The breadth of disease manifestations associated with Bartonella is currently expanding and includes regional lymphadenopathy, rheumatic, ocular, and neurological disorders. The dearth of knowledge regarding diagnosis, treatment and pathogenesis of this disease can be partially attributed to the lack of a reliable small animal model for the disease. For this study, Bartonella henselae, the most common species associated with human disease, was injected into Swiss Webster (SW) mice. When the outcome indicated that produ

In cat-scratch disease (CSD), hematogenous spread may result in atypical presentations. Ocular manifestations develop in a minority of patients, with treatment being important in reducing long-term visual sequelae. Bone infection is rare. We present the case of a 52-year-old woman, with close contact with cats, reporting acute unilateral blurred vision and presenting papilledema, optic disc pallor, and peripapillary hemorrhage. Etiologic study of optic neuritis revealed an elevated positive Bartonella IgG; hence, treatment for CSD with doxycycline plus rifampin and corticosteroids was started.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a self-limited zoonotic infection transmitted by felines caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Bartonella henselae. It usually presents with lymphadenopathy and constitutional symptoms that resolve within eight weeks, with, or without antibiotic treatment. The diagnosis is made by serology, molecular diagnosis in a biopsy, or a positive culture. The recurrence or reactivation of B. henselae has rarely been reported. We present the case of a 45-year-old man with a history of CSD two years before who presented to the clinic with groin lymphadenopathy. The patient had
