We studied 51 cervical carcinomas, among them 25 squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC) and 26 cervical adenocarcinomas (AdCa), and 40 vulvar SCC for the presence of HPV and mutant p53. HPV was detected by PCR, and p53 alterations by temperature-gradient gel electrophoresis/direct sequencing and immunohistochemistry. HPV, mostly type 16/18, was found in 80.4% of the cervical tumors (92.0% of the SCC and 69.2% of the AdCa), but in only 27.5% of vulvar carcinomas. BACKGROUND: Vulvar liposarcoma is rare. Three cases have been reported since 1966. Primary sarcomas of the vulva constitute 1-2% of all vulvar malignancies. Because of their location and appearance, they may be easily misdiagnosed as a more benign process.
CASE: A 65-year-old, black woman had a vulvar lesion that appeared clinically to be a Bartholin's gland abscess. The lesion was a soft tissue mass, was excised in toto and was sent for pathologic study with a presumed diagnosis of lipoma. The pathology report indicated pleomorphic liposarcoma.

By screening for mutations that suppress the vulval defects caused by a constitutively active let-60 ras gene, we identified six loss-of-function alleles of ksr-1, a novel C. elegans gene. A new species of the nematode genus Raphidascaroides Yamaguti, 1941 obtained from the intestine of hammer-headed shark, Sphyrna zygaena (Linnaeus) from Visakhapatnam is described. The specimens do not agree with the description of known species of the genus. The lin-12 and glp-1 genes of Caenorhabditis elegans are members of the lin-12/Notch family of receptors for intercellular signals that specify cell fate. Squamous cell cancer of the vulva diagnosed and surgically treated during pregnancy is a rare event. Only a few cases have been described until the present. We report two additional women with Stage II and III disease. The first patient, who had a 5 x 2-cm ulcerated lesion under the clitoris was treated by radical anterior vulvectomy and bilateral groin dissection when 22 weeks pregnant. A 58-year-old woman presented with typical cutaneous features of lichen planus (LP). She had suffered from vulval pruritus for 3 years, and examination showed lesions suggestive of LP on the vulva. Three months later a plaque developed on the clitoral hood, and biopsy showed an invasive squamous carcinoma. After vulvectomy, features of LP were found in the excised specimen. Vulval LP should be carefully monitored for possible malignant transformation.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planus is a common dermatologic disorder involving the glabrous skin, hair-bearing skin and scalp, nails, and mucous membranes of the oral cavity, penis, and vulva. There have been multiple case reports of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) developing within lesions of hypertrophic cutaneous lichen planus and erosive oral lichen planus. Recently, there have been several case reports of SCC arising within lesions of the genital mucosa: one case of penile lichen planus, and two cases of vulvar lichen planus.
