The levels of human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in dermal specimens taken from lesion skin and normal vulva skin in 30 patients with white lesions of the vulva as well as their urine specimens, and in another 29 vulva biopsy and 37 urine samples from healthy women without the disease as the control group. The results showed that the mean hEGF levels in lesion vulva skin, normal vulva skin of the patients and normal vulva skin of healthy women were 163.40 +/- 97.89 micrograms/L, 119.00 +/- 53.13 micrograms/L and 67.84 +/- 14.72 micrograms/L respectiv

STUDY DESIGN: An open, uncontrolled clinical study on 22 patients affected by histologically confirmed vulvar lichen sclerosus. The frequency and meaning of epithelial alterations adjacent to a vulvar invasive carcinoma are examined. In the period from 1986 to 1989, 37 cases of vulvar invasive carcinoma were observed in the Bergamo Hospital (Anatomopathology Institute of Bergamo) in women aged between 54-95 years operated for vulvectomy. The vulvar epithelium adjacent to the invasive carcinoma was studied in order to determine the frequency and the type of associated lesions. A new case is reported of müllerian adenosarcoma, presenting as a 'benign cervical polyp' protruding through the vulva of a 44 year-old woman admitted with abnormal vaginal bleeding. This report emphasizes the importance of a careful examination of the stroma and special features of the entrapped glands in order to contribute to an earlier and proper diagnosis. The literature is reviewed and the probable histogenesis of this tumor and differential diagnosis with embryonal rhabdomysarcoma (sarcoma botryoides), adenofibroma, malignant mesodermal tumor and carcinosarcoma is discussed.

Obstetric complications may result from burn scarring in the genital area. Women in developing countries typically squat around cooking fires, and burns are common. This recent case in Nepal describes obstructed labor in a young woman whose genital area had extensive scarring from a cooking fire injury. Proper antenatal assessment by health care providers can reduce the risk to mothers and infants of the consequences of a birth canal damaged or obstructed by burn scarring.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical and histologic characteristics of vulvodynia with or without associated human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA, as determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
METHODS: We conducted a standardized chart review of patients referred for vulvodynia lasting for more than 3 months and systematically reviewed all vulvar biopsy specimens histologically. Surgical specimens from 62 patients with vulvar dysplasia and carcinoma in situ were morphologically investigated. We describe a 55-year-old woman with an amelanotic nodular malignant melanoma of the vulva. The tumour had developed within 3 months. Physical examination showed a solid, erythematous, centrally depressed nodular tumour with a waxy appearance. It was 1.3 cm across and located on the right labium majus.
