Beyond cervicovaginal limitations: potential bidirectional interactions between HPV infection and mucosal microbiota from oral, anorectal and penile sites - a mini-review.

Most existing studies focusing on human papillomavirus (HPV)-microbiota interactions are confined to the cervicovaginal tract, while mucosal microecological crosstalk at oral, anorectal and penile sites remains insufficiently summarized. This mini-review provides a narrative synthesis of current sequencing and epidemiological evidence regarding potential bidirectional interactions between HPV infection and site-specific mucosal microbiota across extra-cervicovaginal niches in both males and females. Oral HPV reshapes microbial composition in a sex-, race- and population-dependent manner; perio

Divergent immune ecosystems in HPV-associated and HPV-independent lower anogenital tract malignancies.

Lower anogenital tract malignancies comprise anatomically adjacent but biologically heterogeneous epithelial cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anal canal and penis. This narrative and conceptual Review used a transparent literature search to examine how human papillomavirus (HPV) etiology intersects with tumor lineage, somatic alterations, antigen-presentation competence, immune-cell state and spatial organization. Evidence quality is heterogeneous: cervical cancer is supported by the largest genomic, single-cell, spatial and randomized-trial literature, whereas vaginal, vulvar and penile

Effect of Massage with Topical Corticosteroids on Recurrent Curvature in Staged Repair of Proximal Hypospadias: A Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Ventral penile curvature often accompanies severe hypospadias and poses a risk of recurrence after repair. We postulated that altered myofibroblastic activity at the repair site contributes to recurrent curvature. To address this mechanism, we adopted a specific clinical strategy in 2017. We instructed patients to apply upward massage to the ventral side of the penis using a topical corticosteroid ointment between the two stages of Bracka repair. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of this intervention on the recurrence of curvature after surgery. METHODS: A retrospecti

Morphological and immunohistochemical analysis of unilateral testicular hypoplasia in an XY calf: correlation with the timing of bovine hypospadias.

Hypospadias is a common disorder of sex development (DSD), resulting from the impaired formation of the penile urethra. In mammals, penile urethral development depends on androgens secreted during a limited time window immediately after the onset of testis development. In this study, we performed morphological and immunohistochemical analyses of a 15-day-old genetically XY Holstein calf with perineal hypospadias to characterize a unique phenotype providing critical insights into its pathogenic mechanisms. Although the penis and prostate were grossly developed, the penile urethra was not formed

Integrative taxonomy of Magilaoma, Pedicamista and Pasmaditta, with descriptions of one new genus and four new species from Tasmania (Stylommatophora: Punctoidea).

CONTEXT: Australian punctoids are a poorly known group of small to minute land snails with considerable undescribed diversity, especially in Tasmania. Very few studies to date have included anatomical and molecular data. Herein we address three endemic genera with varying degrees of reduced shell sculpture. AIMS: Our aim was to comprehensively revise the systematics of the genera Magilaoma, Pedicamista and Pasmaditta, tiny punctoids of approximately 2-5 mm in shell width, using comparative morpho-anatomy and phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial (COI, 16S) and nuclear (ELAVI8, ITS2) DNA. Challenges in the detection and assembly of virus integration structures in human genomes.

Oncogenic viral infections are major contributors to cancer development worldwide. Tumor-associated viruses such as human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) can promote malignant transformation through diverse mechanisms, including persistent viral gene expression, chronic inflammation, and, in some cases, integration of viral DNA into the host genome. Among these, HPV is one of the most clinically important DNA tumor viruses and is a major driver of cancers of the cervix, anus, penis, vagina, vulva, and oropharynx, col

Zero-touch technique: a new paradigm in penile prosthesis surgery enabled by a sterile genital barrier system.

Penile prosthesis (PP) implantation remains the most definitive treatment for medication-refractory erectile dysfunction (ED). Despite reductions in infection rates achieved through improved PP coatings, antimicrobial protocols, and refined surgical techniques, PP infection continues to impose clinical and economic burdens. To overcome these intrinsic constraints, we introduce the Zero-Touch Technique (ZTT), a fundamentally new operative paradigm enabled by a purpose-designed sterile genital barrier system. This system consists of an anatomically contoured non-adhesive penile sheath, an adhesi

Genes, fuel, and fate in lung cancer.

Cellular plasticity is a central feature of malignant progression, allowing tumour cells to change identity during tumour evolution, therapeutic adaptation, and metastatic dissemination. This issue is especially acute in lung cancer, where the respiratory epithelium is intrinsically permissive to cell-state change. Genetic lesions, chromatin regulation, and metabolic adaptation are often framed as parallel determinants of lineage plasticity. Emerging evidence instead points to functional coupling across these layers. Oncogenic alterations can weaken lineage fidelity and open alternative trajec

QuRad: Radiomics Feature Extraction for QuPath.

Radiomic features provide a quantitative description of tissue organization in histopathology images. QuPath, a widely used open-source platform for whole-slide image analysis, offers morphology, intensity, and Haralick texture measurements but no standardized radiomic feature set such as that of PyRadiomics. Researchers must therefore export data to external Python pipelines, interrupting their QuPath workflow. QuRad extracts radiomic features from cell detections and annotation regions directly inside QuPath. The extension and equivalent Groovy script implement 119 features: 103 two-dimensio

Caudal versus penile block and urethrocutaneous fistula formation following hypospadias repair in children <2 years: a multicenter randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective studies report conflicting associations between caudal block and urethrocutaneous fistula (UCF) formation after hypospadias repair, often without control for hypospadias severity. Our multicenter randomized, non-inferiority trial compared UCF incidence following caudal versus penile block for single-stage hypospadias surgery. METHODS: Children ≤2 years undergoing primary single-stage midshaft or distal hypospadias repair at 16 Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Network centers were randomized to caudal (group C) or penile block (group P) with general anesthesia. Neonatal priapism revealing polycythemia: A rare association-Case report.

BackgroundNeonatal priapism is a rare and typically benign condition characterized by a persistent penile erection unrelated to stimulation. Unlike priapism beyond the neonatal period, which is more frequently ischemic, most neonatal cases are non-ischemic and idiopathic, although associations with polycythemia have been reported.Case presentationWe report the case of a male neonate born at 37 + 3 weeks of gestation who developed painless priapism on the first day of life, persisting for approximately 48 h. Clinical examination showed no penile discoloration or distress. Color Doppler ultrasou

Penile Strangulation by Four Stainless Steel Rings Requiring Multiple Approaches for Removal: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Penile strangulation is a rare urological emergency requiring prompt intervention. Stainless steel rings may resist conventional cutters because of their rigidity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old man presented with severe penile pain after applying four stainless steel rings to treat phimosis. One ring was trapped at the coronal sulcus and three at the penile base. The glans was congested with partial blistering. Initial attempts using the string method and manual ring cutters failed. Aspiration of approximately 10 mL of blood from the glans allowed removal of the distal ring.

Severe Fournier's Gangrene Complicated by Polymicrobial Bacteremia and Persistent Abdominal Wall Fluid Collections Requiring Readmission.

Fournier's gangrene is a rapidly progressive necrotizing soft tissue infection of the perineal and genital regions associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Patients with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus are at particularly high risk for severe disease and complications. We present the case of a 57-year-old Hispanic male with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (hemoglobin A1c of 12.2%), hypertension, and alcohol use disorder who presented with a two-week history of worsening scrotal pain and swelling. Computed tomography demonstrated extensive subcutaneous emphysema involving

PSMA-Avid Metastatic Prostate Cancer With Intense Penile Uptake on PET/CT: A Rare Site of Spread.

Penile metastasis from prostate adenocarcinoma is an exceptionally rare manifestation of advanced disease. We report the case of a 64-year-old man with biopsy-proven prostatic adenocarcinoma (cT3bN1M1, Gleason 4+4=8), diagnosed in 2020 with an initial PSA of 122.85 ng/mL. The most remarkable finding was intense, diffuse, and homogeneous PSMA uptake throughout the corpora cavernosa along the entire penile shaft (SUVmax=76.9). Histopathologic examination confirmed metastatic prostatic adenocarcinoma (Grade Group 3, Gleason 4+3=7), involving 100% of the sampled penile tissue. This case illustrate

Hard-flaccid syndrome: a systematic review of aetiopathophysiology, clinical presentation and management.

Hard-flaccid syndrome (HFS) is a rare condition characterised by a semi-rigid penis in the flaccid state, often accompanied by perineal and urinary symptoms. It may also induce psychological distress, which can exacerbate physical symptoms, creating a vicious cycle. There is currently no standardised treatment for HFS, and management typically focuses on addressing both the underlying causes and presenting symptoms. A systematic review of the literature identified 8 eligible studies. Although the exact aetiopathogenesis remains unclear, it is hypothesised that an initial penile trauma may trig
