A role for epithelium-derived 6-nitrodopamine on human ureter contractility.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To investigate the basal release of 6-nitrodopamine (6-ND) from human isolated ureter and the role of this novel catecholamine in the ureter contractility. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Ureters from 67 brain-dead organ donors (40 males and 27 females) were used during kidney transplantation procedures. After retrieval, a 2-cm distal ureter segment was isolated and incubated in Krebs-Henseleit solution at 37°C with continuous oxygenation. Basal 6-ND release was measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Studies were performed on 5-mm ureter rings mounted in

CIRSE Standards of Practice on Nephrostomy and Ureteric Stent Placement and Exchange.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive uropathy is a very common pathology of the genitourinary system which, if untreated, leads to renal impairment, end-stage renal failure and death. Particularly in the case of acute obstructive uropathy, urgent decompression is necessary to prevent compression-mediated ischaemia of the renal parenchyma and the development of irreversible renal failure. Percutaneous nephrostomy is a well-established and relatively safe image-guided procedure used to obtain access to the renal collecting system and is the procedure of choice for the infected obstructed kidney, minimising t

Differentiation in the human urothelia is defined by distinct alternative polyadenylation.

Distinct epithelial cell states arise during differentiation, but mechanisms generating transcriptomic diversity among them remain poorly defined. The human ureter urothelium contains basal progenitor, intermediate cells, and terminally differentiated umbrella cells. Prior single-cell RNA sequencing revealed similar global gene expression profiles across these states, raising the question of how distinct identities emerge. Here, we show that alternative cleavage and polyadenylation (APA) introduces a major layer of transcriptomic diversity during urothelial differentiation, largely independent

Emerging role of Candida species virulence factors and antifungal resistance in ureteral stent colonization and encrustation.

BACKGROUND: Ureteral stents are susceptible to colonization by Candida species, leading to stent-associated infections that are often difficult to treat. This study aimed to identify the Candida species colonizing ureteral stents and to assess the potential impact of their virulence factors on ureteral stent encrustation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Candida species and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated and identified from urine and ureteral stent samples. Phenotypic and genotypic detection of virulence factors and antifungal resistance was performed. In addition, the anticandidal activity of Pse

A superhydrophilic zwitterionic hydrogel coating for enhancing long-term anti-bacterial adhesion and anti-encrustation properties of ureteral stents.

Prolonged indwelling of ureteral stents often leads to encrustation, which can cause functional failure and poses a significant clinical challenge. Zwitterionic polymers exhibit excellent anti-fouling performance due to their strong surface hydration. Inspired by this, a multifunctional hydrogel coating based on a trimethylamine N-oxide zwitterionic polymer was developed for polyurethane stents to mitigate encrustation. The coating was fabricated using an innovative approach that combines a superwetting-assisted interfacial polymerization strategy with dip coating technology, significantly imp

Two Cases of Inguinal Hernia after Kidney Transplantation Treated with Transabdominal Preperitoneal.

INTRODUCTION: The Lichtenstein procedure is often selected for kidney transplantation (KT) recipients due to concerns about the risk of injury to the transplanted organ. However, there have been reports of complications such as ureteral obstruction in cases where the Lichtenstein procedure was performed; therefore, safer techniques and approaches must be selected. We herein report 2 cases of inguinal hernia on the transplant side after KT that were treated with laparoscopic hernia repair (transabdominal preperitoneal [TAPP]) following a careful preoperative assessment. CASE PRESENTATION: The

Retrograde intraureteral injections of indocyanine green versus ureteral stents to reduce urinary tract complications during pelvic surgery: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Failure to successfully delineate ureters during pelvic surgery carries significant risks. The ureters are the most commonly injured retroperitoneal structures, and ureteral injuries are associated with prolonged hospital stays, higher health care costs, and increased morbidity. In this meta-analysis, we compared the retrograde ureteral injection of indocyanine green and ureteral stents to visualize ureters and prevent ureteral injury and other urinary tract complications during pelvic surgery. METHODS: Thorough reviews of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were conducted to identify al
