Beyond a diagnostic modality: the pivotal role of ultrasound biomicroscopy in ophthalmic care pathways.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is a high-frequency ultrasound imaging system (50-100 MHz) that serves as a typical biomedical device and instrumentation tool, enabling high-resolution, real-time, in vivo imaging of anterior segment structures. It provides visualization of the cornea, iris, lens and zonules, ciliary body, and angle structures, as well as quantitative measurements. This review examines UBM's technical principles, clinical applications, and recent technological innovations, with a focus on its value in biomedical imaging and image processing. Key applications in glaucoma, corneal

Retinal Flattening Associated With Photoreceptor Degeneration Leads to the Formation of Staphyloma-Like Morphology in Retinitis Pigmentosa.

PURPOSE: A staphyloma-like morphology has been reported in eyes with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We investigated retinal curvature in RP using widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography and explored the mechanisms underlying this abnormal morphology. METHODS: This retrospective study included 74 eyes with RP and 40 control eyes, all with axial lengths of 22 to 26 mm. The curvature of Bruch's membrane was analyzed in the central and peripheral regions of all eyes. In 37 RP eyes with an ellipsoid zone (EZ) length ≥ 1.5 mm, curvature was further evaluated in EZ-preserved and EZ-defected

Turning Red to Green Repeatedly: Ancestral LWS Duplications Drive Convergent Visual Tuning in Teleost Fishes.

Photopigments, formed by an opsin protein bound to a light-sensitive chromophore, underlie vertebrate vision. Long-wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsins mediate red-light detection, and most teleosts retain a single functional LWS1. A shorter-shifted green-sensitive paralog (LWS2) is found only in a few lineages. By mining teleost genomes and sequencing retinal transcriptomes, we identify elopomorphs as an additional lineage retaining LWS2 (alongside characins and osteoglossomorphs). Surprisingly, we reveal a previously overlooked, shorter-shifted paralog, LWS3, restricted to gobies (Percomorpha)

Corneal Variables in Children: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Corneal variables such as thickness, curvature and diameter are important for ocular assessments in children. Despite this, there is limited normative data relevant to children for these corneal variables. Developmental changes, together with potential demographic differences, complicate the direct extrapolation of adult reference values to paediatric populations. PURPOSE: To map literature related to corneal thickness, curvature, and diameter in healthy children. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across different electronic databases to identify articles p

Ex vivo evaluation of corneal permeation and irritation potential associated with proparacaine hydrochloride misuse.

INTRODUCTION: Proparacaine hydrochloride is a topical ocular anesthetic widely used in diagnostic procedures. Although generally safe when properly administered, repeated or unsupervised use has been associated with clinically relevant corneal injury. In contexts where access to topical anesthetics is insufficiently controlled, misuse may result in cumulative epithelial damage and vision-threatening complications. Despite clinical reports and experimental evidence of corneal toxicity, quantitative data linking exposure conditions to structural corneal damage under controlled ex vivo settings r

H3K9me3 inhibition reverses Alzheimer's progression by restoring synaptic and immune proteostasis across the brain-retina axis.

INTRODUCTION: Epigenetic dysregulation is increasingly linked to aging and neurodegeneration, yet its contribution to retinal and brain pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains unclear. METHODS: We quantified the repressive epigenetic mark histone H3 lysine 9 trimethylation (H3K9me3) in post mortem retinas and brains from donors spanning normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and AD dementia. Using a multi-enzyme methyltransferase panel, we characterized the in vitro inhibitory activity of ETP69, an epidithiodiketopiperazine, against suppressor of variegation 3-9 homologue 1 (SUV39

Mastering the Eye: Clinical Paradigm Shifts from Optical Restoration to Genomic Correction.

Historically, the main operation for cataract was couching, and the interior of the living eye could not be examined until Hermann von Helmholtz introduced the ophthalmoscope in 1851. Since the mid-twentieth century, seven advances have reshaped ophthalmic care. Harold Ridley implanted the first intraocular lens in 1949, and the ophthalmologist Charles Kelman and the engineer Anton Banko developed phacoemulsification, reported in 1967. Robert Machemer performed the first pars plana vitrectomy in 1970, while David Huang and colleagues described optical coherence tomography in 1991. Endothelial
