PURPOSE: When examining the ocular surface, patients are required to look straight ahead and the effects of vertical eye movement on tear film behavior are not considered despite it being natural and common to change gaze without blinking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide an anatomical description of the endoscopic transorbital (ETO) transconjunctival approach to the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF).
METHODS: Five formalin-fixed, silicone-injected human cadaver heads were studied at the Rhoton Anatomy Laboratory, Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey. By using the ETO transconjunctival route, the authors performed dissections on 10 PPFs (both orbits of each specimen). INTRODUCTION: Human amniotic membrane (hAM) is considered to have low immunogenicity since Akle et al. reported no anti-HLA antibodies (Abs) in four volunteers after subcutaneous grafting of fresh hAM in 1981. But the sensitivity of the detection methods has significantly improved since then. Furthermore, hAM graft is a massive local input of allogenic HLA-G whose potential immunogenicity has never been assessed. The objective of this study was to look for the presence of anti-HLA class I, II, and anti HLA-G Abs at 1 and 3 months after hAM transplantation on the ocular surface.
