Simple oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (SOMET) for bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency in a patient of failed simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET): a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We report the successful outcome of cataract surgery following simple oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (SOMET) in a patient with drug-induced cicatrizing conjunctivitis (DICC) and failed simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET). While SOMET has previously been described in Stevens-Johnson syndrome, its utility in cases of failed SLET or DICC has not been reported. Additionally, the long-term outcomes of SOMET and subsequent cataract surgery post SOMET have also not been described previously. CASE PRESENTATION: A male in his thirties presented with bilateral limbal

Targeting NF-κB/TLR4/ERK/MYD88 and Caspase-1/IL-1β Pathways by Diacerein in Alleviation of 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Myocardial, Corneal, and Retinal Injury.

Chemotherapeutic agents, including 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), are widely used to treat various types of malignant disorders, but cardiac injury limits their clinical benefit. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the usefulness of diacerein (DIA) in alleviating 5-FU myocardial and ocular injury. 50 male Wistar rats were included in the current model, and 5-FU was administered as a single intraperitoneal dose (150 mg/kg) on the first day of the study to induce myocardial and ocular injury, followed by co-administration of DIA (25, 50 mg/kg/day) by oral gavage for 7 days. 5-FU-induced myocardial and ocular inj

Development of the eye in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella): Ocular histomorphology, corneal surface ultrastructure, and retinal calretinin and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity.

Eye posthatching development was examined in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) from 1 day posthatching (1 dph) to 365 dph. Eye histology and morphometry, retinal expression of calretinin (CR) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and corneal ultrastructure were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Basic eye structure was detectable at 1 dph, though important features, including retina and iris pigmentation as well as photoreceptor differentiation, were delayed till 4 dph. Differentiated photoreceptors seemed to emerge at 4 dph with evident increases in their count and shape divers

[Chinese expert consensus on the management of corneal and ocular surface adverse events related to antibody-drug conjugates (2026)].

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), as a novel class of targeted anticancer therapies, have demonstrated significantly enhanced efficacy. However, the associated ocular adverse events have emerged as a critical issue impacting patients' quality of life and treatment compliance. ADC-induced ocular adverse events primarily affect corneal and ocular surface tissues. With the recent approval of multiple ADC agents in China and the extensive ongoing clinical trials, standardized guidance for managing corneal and ocular surface adverse events is urgently needed. hTERT associates with Rab7A to enhance autophagy and rescue oxLDL induced endothelial dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Endothelial dysfunction is a hallmark of atherosclerosis, driven by chronic exposure to oxidized LDL and linked to impaired autophagy. Although restoring autophagy in atherosclerosis has been shown to yield protective effects, the mechanisms contributing to dysregulated autophagy are unknown. Apart from previously known extra telomeric role in regulating inflammation, emerging evidence suggests a strong direct correlation between hTERT and autophagy pathway, however, potential molecular mechanisms still remain unknown. This study investigates hTERT's extra-telomeric function in r

Mucoadhesive and ROS-responsive polymeric vesicles for anti-angiogenic therapy in corneal neovascularization.

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a major cause of visual impairment worldwide and results from disruption of the cornea's angiogenic privilege by excessive angiogenic signaling and oxidative stress. Current clinical management relies on corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or anti-VEGF injections, yet these approaches often provide incomplete efficacy and are associated with adverse effects, invasiveness, or limited patient compliance. In this study, we developed a multifunctional polymeric vesicle platform, termed PPM, to address these limitations through combined anti-an

Angiotensin (1-7)-based Proteomimetic Polymers as Topicals for the Remediation and Repair of the Cornea following Injury.

The cornea is the outermost layer of the eye, most vulnerable to injury including from chemical exposure, either environmental, industrial or chemical weapons. For example, exposure of the eye to sulfur mustard (SM) can cause mustard gas keratopathy, resulting in devastating consequences for vision. Available treatments for corneal mustard keratopathy are either ineffective, or if used for a prolonged time, have deleterious side effects. Here, we aimed to harness the anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic peptide angiotensin-(1-7), known as Ang-(1-7), that is derived from the renin-angiotensin

Ripple-Like Descemet Membrane Folds Following Combined Microhook Ab Interno Trabeculotomy and Cataract Surgery: A Case Report.

We report a case of distinctive ripple-like Descemet membrane folds after combined microhook ab interno trabeculotomy (µLOT) and cataract surgery. A 70-year-old Japanese man with primary open-angle glaucoma and cataract underwent nasal µLOT followed by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the right eye. At 1 week postoperatively, unusual ripple-like Descemet membrane folds, which had not been noted at the examination on postoperative day 1, were observed in the inferior cornea with localized corneal edema. Best-corrected visual acuity was 0.4 in decimal notation. Multimodal

[Unilateral Lisch epithelial corneal dystrophy discovered after LASIK evaluation: a case report].

A 24-year-old woman was found to have a gray, intermittent, linear opacity in the supertemporal quadrant of the right corneal epithelium during preoperative evaluation for laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK); all other examinations were within normal limits. After bilateral LASIK, both corneas healed well, and the linear opacity in the right eye had disappeared. More than 3 years postoperatively, a gray band-shaped opacity was detected in the right cornea, and a diagnosis of Lisch epithelial corneal dystrophy was established. Five months after diagnosis, the corneal opacity had significantly

Surface microgrooved xyloglucan tuned collagen xerogel for corneal stroma remodeling.

Corneal ailments distorting the collagen fibrils of the stroma impair vision. Due to donor cornea shortage and the intrinsic limitations of synthetic materials, grafts resembling stromal microarchitecture are gaining attention. However, inferior mechanical properties, poor adhesion, and long-term instability of microstructural corneal grafts are challenges. In response, this study presents a xyloglucan-modulated human umbilical cord collagen-based xerogel (MX) that replicates the physiological attributes, transparency (85%), diffusivity, and proteolytic resistance of the native cornea. MX disp

Advances in precision medicine for the anterior segment: Therapeutic applications using CRISPR-Cas9.

CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing has emerged as one of the most promising strategies in precision medicine applied to ophthalmology. Although its initial development focused on inherited retinal diseases, recent advances have increasingly targeted anterior segment disorders, including herpetic keratitis, hereditary corneal dystrophies, and genetically associated glaucoma. The ability to modify specific DNA or RNA sequences enables direct intervention in molecular pathways involved in inflammatory, degenerative, and infectious disease progression. This review summarizes the biological basis of CRISPR-C
