Current knowledge on spinal meningiomas: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are primary central nervous system tumours that arise from both cranial and spinal meninges. Spinal meningiomas occur less frequently than their cranial counterparts and are consequently given less attention in the literature. Therefore, systematic studies are needed to summarise the current knowledge on spinal meningiomas, providing a solid evidence base for treatment strategies. This systematic review of the literature will therefore assess studies describing spinal meningiomas, their epidemiology, diagnostics, treatment and outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Electron

A Hypertrophic Spinal Pachymeningitis Patient With Factor V Leiden (G1691A), MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, PAI-1 4G-5G, Glycoprotein IIIa L33P Gene Mutations.

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP) is a rare clinical entity of diverse etiology, characterized by a chronic inflammation that causes dura thickening. Reports of Idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis (IHCP) were related to infections, trauma, tumors, and rheumatologic conditions. It was first described by Charcot and Joffroy regarding spinal meninges in 1869. HP has three stages; progressive radicular symptoms begin first, then muscle weakness and atrophy start. Findings such as paraplegia, loss of bladder and bowel control, and respiratory distress caused by intercostal and diaphragm

"Ependymal-in" Gradient of Thalamic Damage in Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

Leptomeningeal and perivenular infiltrates are important contributors to cortical grey matter damage and disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). Whereas perivenular inflammation induces vasculocentric lesions, leptomeningeal involvement follows a subpial "surface-in" gradient. To determine whether similar gradient of damage occurs in deep grey matter nuclei, we examined the dorsomedial thalamic nuclei and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 41 postmortem secondary progressive MS cases compared with 5 non-neurological controls and 12 controls with other neurological diseases. CSF/epe

Lymphotoxin-alpha expression in the meninges causes lymphoid tissue formation and neurodegeneration.

Organized meningeal immune cell infiltrates are suggested to play an important role in cortical grey matter pathology in the multiple sclerosis brain, but the mechanisms involved are as yet unresolved. Lymphotoxin-alpha plays a key role in lymphoid organ development and cellular cytotoxicity in the immune system and its expression is increased in the CSF of naïve and progressive multiple sclerosis patients and post-mortem meningeal tissue. Here we show that persistently increased levels of lymphotoxin-alpha in the cerebral meninges can give rise to lymphoid-like structures and underlying multi

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging Combined with Perfusion-Weighted Imaging under Segmentation Algorithm in the Diagnosis of Melanoma.

This study is aimed at exploring the value of magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) combined with perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) for diagnosing melanoma under a three-dimensional (3D) hybrid segmentation algorithm. 40 patients with melanoma were collected as research objects and subjected to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. A segmentation model was constructed and the original images were input. The noise contained in the images was preprocessed and normalized, and the mixed level set segmentation was performed after linear fusion of the images. Imaging findings we

Clinical picture, diagnostics and treatment of bacterial meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious infectious disease of the cerebral meninges, which occurs worldwide and threatens the lives of people of all ages. The largest number of cases in developed countries is caused by the gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. Other more common agents are Neisseria meningitidis serotype B and Listeria monocytogenes. Fever is the most commonly reported symptom in paediatric patients, occurring in up to 93% of cases. Further, it is possible to observe headache, vomiting and positive meningeal phenomena. The most common symptoms in adults are fever, headach

A Case Report and Literature Review of New-Onset Myasthenia Gravis After COVID-19 Infection.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the neuromuscular junction caused by a B-cell-mediated, T-cell-dependent immunologic attack at the end plate of the postsynaptic membrane. Attack on muscle acetylcholine receptors (AChR) of the postsynaptic membrane due to the AChR, muscle-specific tyrosine kinase, or lipoprotein receptor-related peptide 4 antibodies lead to symptoms of painless, fluctuating weakness of muscle groups and often begins with ocular signs and symptoms. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory disease caused by severe acute respiratory sy

The epidemiology of aseptic meningitis in New Zealand children from 1991 to 2020.

AIM: Aseptic meningitis, including culture negative and viral meningitis, contributes a significant health-care burden, including unnecessary antibiotic use and hospitalisation to treat possible bacterial meningitis. This study analysed aseptic meningitis hospitalisations in New Zealand (NZ) children over 29 years. METHODS: In this population-based study, aseptic meningitis hospitalisations in NZ children <15 years old were analysed from 1991 to 2020. Incident rate ratios were calculated using Poisson regression models. Variations in hospitalisations by age, year, sex, ethnicity, geographical

West Nile Virus and Other Domestic Nationally Notifiable Arboviral Diseases - United States, 2020.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes and ticks. West Nile virus (WNV), mainly transmitted by Culex species mosquitos, is the leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease in the United States (1). Other arboviruses cause sporadic cases of disease and occasional outbreaks. This report summarizes passive data for nationally notifiable domestic arboviruses in the United States reported to CDC for 2020. Forty-four states reported 884 cases of domestic arboviral disease, including those caused by West Nile (731)

Radiation Disrupts the Protective Function of the Spinal Meninges in a Mouse Model of Tumor-induced Spinal Cord Compression.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in multidisciplinary treatments for various cancers have extended the survival period of patients with spinal metastases. Radiotherapy has been widely used to treat spinal metastases; nevertheless, long-term survivors sometimes undergo more surgical intervention after radiotherapy because of local tumor relapse. Generally, intradural invasion of a spinal tumor seldom occurs because the dura mater serves as a tissue barrier against tumor infiltration. However, after radiation exposure, some spinal tumors invade the dura mater, resulting in leptomeningeal disseminatio

Tensile mechanical properties of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar porcine spinal meninges.

BACKGROUND: The spinal meninges play a mechanical protective role for the spinal cord. Better knowledge of the mechanical behavior of these tissues wrapping the cord is required to accurately model the stress and strain fields of the spinal cord during physiological or traumatic motions. Then, the mechanical properties of meninges along the spinal canal are not well documented. The aim of this study was to quantify the elastic meningeal mechanical properties along the porcine spinal cord in both the longitudinal direction and in the circumferential directions for the dura-arachnoid maters comp

Decellularized spinal cord meninges extracellular matrix hydrogel that supports neurogenic differentiation and vascular structure formation.

Decellularization of extracellular matrices offers an alternative source of regenerative biomaterials that preserve biochemical structure and matrix components of native tissues. In this study, decellularized bovine spinal cord meninges (dSCM)-derived extracellular matrix hydrogel (MeninGEL) is fabricated by employing a protocol that involves physical, chemical, and enzymatic processing of spinal meninges tissue and preserves the biochemical structure of meninges. The success of decellularization is characterized by measuring the contents of residual DNA, glycosaminoglycans, and hydroxyproline
