Using Medication Dispensation Data to Identify Clusters with Similar Prescribing Patterns in Older Adults Living with Dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older adults living with dementia are a heterogeneous group, which can make studying optimal medication management challenging. Unsupervised machine learning is a group of computing methods that rely on unlabeled data-that is, where the algorithm itself is discovering patterns without the need for researchers to label the data with a known outcome. These methods may help us to better understand complex prescribing patterns in this population. The objective of our study was to use clustering methods to determine whether common prescribing clusters exist in older adult

Spinal calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis (CAPNON) associated with facet joint pathologies: CAPNON diagnostic and pathogenic insights.

Calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis (CAPNON) is a rare tumor-like fibro-osseous lesion that can develop anywhere in the neuraxis. Approximately a half of reported CAPNONs developed in the spinal region, mostly close to the facet joint (FJ). The diagnosis of spinal CAPNONs is challenging given the existence of mimics and associated pathologies including calcific degeneration of the FJ ligaments (DFJL) and synovial cysts (SCs). The pathogenesis of CAPNON remains elusive, although there have been a few hypotheses including degenerative, reactive, proliferative and immune-mediated processes.

Research trends and hotspots of exercise therapy in Panvascular disease: A bibliometric analysis.

Panvascular diseases are a group of vascular system diseases, mainly including the heart, brain, neck, and other parts of the vascular lesions. As a non-pharmacological intervention, exercise therapy could prevent and treat Panvascular diseases. However, few bibliometric analyses of exercise therapy in Panvascular disease exist. This study aimed to analyze the trends and hotspots over the past decade and provide insights into the latest state of the art in global research, thereby contributing to further research in the field. We systematically searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSC

The distribution of Dlx1-2 and glutamic acid decarboxylase in the embryonic and adult hypothalamus reveals three differentiated LHA subdivisions in rodents.

The lateral hypothalamus (LHA) is still a poorly understood brain region. Based on published Dlx and Gad gene expression patterns in the embryonic and adult hypothalamus respectively, three large areas are identified in the LHA. A central tuberal LHA region is already well described as it contains neurons producing the peptides melanin-concentrating hormone or hypocretin. This region is rich in GABAergic neurons and is specified by Dlx gene expression in the rodent embryo. Rostrally and caudally bordering the tuberal LHA, two Dlx-GAD-GABA poor regions are then easily delineated. The three regi

Topological atlas of the hypothalamus in adult rhesus monkey.

The prosomeric model explains the embryological development of the central nervous system (CNS) shared by all vertebrates as a Bauplan. As a primary event, the early neural plate is patterned by intersecting longitudinal plates and transverse segments, forming a mosaic of progenitor units. The hypothalamus is specified by three prosomeres (hp1, hp2, and the acroterminal domain) of the secondary prosencephalon with corresponding alar and basal plate parts, which develop apart from the diencephalon. Mounting evidence suggests that progenitor units within alar and basal plate parts of hp1 and hp2

Bimodal function of chromatin remodeler Hmga1 in neural crest induction and Wnt-dependent emigration.

During gastrulation, neural crest cells are specified at the neural plate border, as characterized by Pax7 expression. Using single-cell RNA sequencing coupled with high-resolution in situ hybridization to identify novel transcriptional regulators, we show that chromatin remodeler Hmga1 is highly expressed prior to specification and maintained in migrating chick neural crest cells. Temporally controlled CRISPR-Cas9-mediated knockouts uncovered two distinct functions of Hmga1 in neural crest development. At the neural plate border, Hmga1 regulates Pax7-dependent neural crest lineage specificati

18F-FDG brain PET hypometabolism in post-SARS-CoV-2 infection: substrate for persistent/delayed disorders?

PURPOSE: Several brain complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been reported. It has been moreover speculated that this neurotropism could potentially cause a delayed outbreak of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases of neuroinflammatory origin. A propagation mechanism has been proposed across the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, from the nose to the olfactory epithelium, and possibly afterward to other limbic structures, and deeper parts of the brain including the brainstem. METHODS: Review of clinical examination, and whole-brain voxel-based analysis of 18F-FDG PET metabol

A Whole-Body Sensory-Motor Gradient is Revealed in the Medial Wall of the Parietal Lobe.

In 1954, Penfield and Jasper's findings based on electric stimulation of epileptic patients led them to hypothesize that a sensory representation of the body should be found in the precuneus. They termed this representation the "supplementary sensory" area and emphasized that the exact form of this homunculus could not be specified on the basis of their results. In the decades that followed, their prediction was neglected. The precuneus was found to be involved in numerous motor, cognitive and visual processes, but no work was done on its somatotopic organization. Here, we used a periodic expe

The emergence of the visual word form: Longitudinal evolution of category-specific ventral visual areas during reading acquisition.

How does education affect cortical organization? All literate adults possess a region specialized for letter strings, the visual word form area (VWFA), within the mosaic of ventral regions involved in processing other visual categories such as objects, places, faces, or body parts. Therefore, the acquisition of literacy may induce a reorientation of cortical maps towards letters at the expense of other categories such as faces. To test this cortical recycling hypothesis, we studied how the visual cortex of individual children changes during the first months of reading acquisition. Ten 6-year-o

RATEmiRs: the rat atlas of tissue-specific and enriched miRNAs database.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression and have been targeted as indicators of environmental/toxicologic stressors. Using the data from our deep sequencing of miRNAs in an extensive sampling of rat tissues, we developed a database called RATEmiRs for the Rat Atlas of Tissue-specific and Enriched miRNAs to allow users to dynamically determine mature-, iso- and pre-miR expression abundance, enrichment and specificity in rat tissues and organs. RESULTS: Illumina sequencing count data from mapped reads and meta data from the miRNA body atlas consisting of 21 and 23 tissues (14 or

Is the extrastriate body area part of the dorsal visuomotor stream?

The extrastriate body area (EBA) processes visual information about body parts, and it is considered one among a series of category-specific perceptual modules distributed across the occipito-temporal cortex. However, recent evidence raises the possibility that EBA might also provide an interface between perception and action, linking the ventral and dorsal streams of visual information processing. Here, we assess anatomical evidence supporting this possibility. We localise EBA in individual subjects using a perceptual task and compare the characteristics of its functional and structural conne

Specifying the core network supporting episodic simulation and episodic memory by activation likelihood estimation.

It has been suggested that the simulation of hypothetical episodes and the recollection of past episodes are supported by fundamentally the same set of brain regions. The present article specifies this core network via Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE). Specifically, a first meta-analysis revealed joint engagement of expected core-network regions during episodic memory and episodic simulation. These include parts of the medial surface, the hippocampus and parahippocampal cortex within the medial temporal lobes, and the temporal and inferior posterior parietal cortices on the lateral surfa

Fast estimation of diffusion tensors under Rician noise by the EM algorithm.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used to characterize, in vivo, the white matter of the central nerve system (CNS). This biological tissue contains much anatomic, structural and orientational information of fibers in human brain. Spectral data from the displacement distribution of water molecules located in the brain tissue are collected by a magnetic resonance scanner and acquired in the Fourier domain. After the Fourier inversion, the noise distribution is Gaussian in both real and imaginary parts and, as a consequence, the recorded magnitude data are corrupted by Rician noise. Stati

Types of Cancers Prevailing in Pakistan and their Management Evaluation.

Cancer is basically a class of disorder marked by uncontrolled proliferation of cells which have the potential to interfere with different systems of body like digestive, central nervous and circulatory systems by releasing hormones. Tumors that reside only in a specified location and show restricted growth are commonly characterized as benign tumors. When tumor cells grow and effectively spread to other body parts and potentially invade and damage healthy tissues they show various degrees of malignancy. Cancer may be caused by different factors like gene mutations, carcinogens and some medica

Deformable part models for object detection in medical images.

BACKGROUND: Object detection in 3-D medical images is often necessary for constraining a segmentation or registration task. It may be a task in its own right as well, when instances of a structure, e.g. the lymph nodes, are searched. Problems from occlusion, illumination and projection do not arise, making the problem simpler than object detection in photographies. However, objects of interest are often not well contrasted against the background. Influence from noise and other artifacts is much stronger and shape and appearance may vary substantially within a class. METHODS: Deformable models

Localization of deep brain stimulation electrodes via metal artifacts in CT images.

In Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), the location of implanted electrodes in the brain has direct influence on the therapeutic effect of the treatment. This work deals with estimating the position of the implanted DBS electrodes from the images registered by X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scanners. A technique named junction method that takes advantage of the streak artifacts created by the metal parts of the electrodes in CT images is proposed for this purpose. To start with, the brain image is extracted by defining a brain mask. Next, the edges are intensified by applying a Gaussian convolution

Regionally-specified second trimester fetal neural stem cells reveals differential neurogenic programming.

Neural stem/progenitor cells (NSC) have the potential for treatment of a wide range of neurological diseases such as Parkinson Disease and multiple sclerosis. Currently, NSC have been isolated only from hippocampus and subventricular zone (SVZ) of the adult brain. It is not known whether NSC can be found in all parts of the developing mid-trimester central nervous system (CNS) when the brain undergoes massive transformation and growth. Multipotent NSC from the mid-trimester cerebra, thalamus, SVZ, hippocampus, thalamus, cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord can be derived and propagated as cl

Role of Shh in the development of molecularly characterized tegmental nuclei in mouse rhombomere 1.

Hindbrain rhombomeres in general are differentially specified molecularly by unique combinations of Hox genes with other developmental genes. Rhombomere 1 displays special features, including absence of Hox gene expression. It lies within the hindbrain range of the Engrailed genes (En1, En2), controlled by the isthmic organizer via diffusion of FGF8. It is limited rostrally by the isthmus territory, and caudally by rhombomere 2. It is double the normal size of any other rhombomere. Its dorsal part generates the cerebellar hemispheres and its ventral part gives rise to several populations, such

Clonal analysis of olfaction in Drosophila: image registration.

Clonal analysis with the MARCM (mosaic analysis with a repressible cell marker) system can be used for studying cell lineage, development, and anatomy in the Drosophila olfactory system and other parts of the fly brain. To compare confocal images of labeled neurons in different brains, it may be desirable to register them to a template or standard brain. There are various image registration approaches available. Some depend on manually specifying landmarks on the brains to be registered. Others depend only on the grayscale intensity value of one of the channels in the confocal image. Another i

Minimizing data transfer with sustained performance in wireless brain-machine interfaces.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) may be used to investigate neural mechanisms or to treat the symptoms of neurological disease and are hence powerful tools in research and clinical practice. Wireless BMIs add flexibility to both types of applications by reducing movement restrictions and risks associated with transcutaneous leads. However, since wireless implementations are typically limited in terms of transmission capacity and energy resources, the major challenge faced by their designers is to combine high performance with adaptations to limited resources. Here, we have identified three key
