INTRODUCTION: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A) is a rare autosomal dominant hereditary cancer syndrome, predominantly caused by mutations of the RET proto-oncogene on chromosome 10q11.2. It typically presents with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), pheochromocytoma, and primary hyperparathyroidism. Cases with a MEN2A phenotype but negative RET testing are uncommon, posing challenges for diagnosis and patient management.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 63-year-old female who was diagnosed with MTC and pheochromocytoma. and cystic parathyroid gland. Genetic workup was neg

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is caused by overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland (most commonly a parathyroid adenoma, PTA) or glands. Historically, the most commonly described surgical approach has been bilateral neck exploration (BNE). This study focuses on the outcomes of targeted minimally invasive parathyroidectomy [unilateral neck exploration (UNE), focused exploration (FE)-including endoscope and/or exoscope-assisted parathyroidectomy]. Intraoperative measurement of parathyroid hormone levels (ioPTH) is generally considered

BACKGROUND: Benign thyroid nodules frequently require surgical intervention. Balancing thyroid‑function preservation and re‑operation‑related neuro‑parathyroidal risk represents an unmet clinical challenge. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of translocating residual normal thyroid tissue into the subcutaneous space after resection of benign thyroid tumors. Conventional thyroid resection commonly compromises native thyroid function and leads to postoperative hypothyroidism. Residual thyroid tissue retained in the neck complicates surveillance and increases risks to the recurrent l

BACKGROUND: We evaluated experience with probe-based near-infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) system (PTeye) in parathyroid gland (PTG) identification during total thyroidectomy.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients undergoing total thyroidectomy using PTeye (2020-2022; n = 84) were compared with a historical visual-identification cohort (2018-2019; n = 103).
RESULTS: PTG identification rates were comparable, although 42% of PTGs detected with PTeye were initially visualized with low or moderate confidence. Significantly fewer patients in the PTeye cohort had PTGs incidentally identi

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to verify that a strategy involving prophylactic exposure of the inferior parathyroid glands and preservation of their venous blood flow-achieved through early identification and protection of their venous drainage-can enhance the success rate of maintaining glandular perfusion and effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
METHODS: This study included 600 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with concomitant bilateral central neck dissection between November 2019 and December 2025. Patients were divided into two gro

A 4-month-old female-intact German Shepherd mixed breed dog was evaluated for polyuria, polydipsia, oral discomfort, tachypnea, and pyrexia. Blood testing documented total and ionized hypercalcemia with an increased parathyroid hormone concentration. Computed tomography identified bone abnormalities of the mandibule and mild, diffuse pulmonary changes. Ultrasonography of the neck documented one mildly enlarged parathyroid gland that was surgically removed. Histopathology indicated diffuse chief cell hyperplasia. The ionized calcium concentration normalized within 7 days postoperatively.

BACKGROUND: Thyroidectomy carries a significant risk of parathyroid gland injury, with transient hypoparathyroidism occurring in 15-50% of cases and permanent hypoparathyroidism in up to 5%, resulting in lifelong morbidity. Near-infrared (NIR) autofluorescence imaging combined with indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography has emerged as an intraoperative adjunct for parathyroid identification and perfusion assessment, but its comparative efficacy over conventional white-light surgery remains to be comprehensively quantified.
METHODS: A systematic search across five databases through J

PURPOSE: Parathyroid fluorescence with indocyanine green (ICG) might prevent and predict postoperative hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) after total thyroidectomy (TT). We aimed to evaluate parathyroid gland vascularization with ICG during TT. Further, we aimed to evaluate safety of ICG fluorescence and to correlate changes in PTH with postoperative hypoPT after TT.
METHODS: From May 2021 to June 2023, consecutive patients underwent TT and parathyroid fluorescence with ICG. Each visible parathyroid gland was scored 0, 1 or 2 depending on fluorescence intensity. Patients with at least one gland scor

OBJECTIVE: Accurate preoperative localization of the affected parathyroid gland is important for focused parathyroidectomy in primary hyperparathyroidism, yet no single imaging modality is uniformly reliable. This study evaluated the incremental localization benefit of combining ultrasonography (US), 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy (MIBI), and four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) and assessed agreement between imaging-measured and histopathological adenoma size.
METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included 118 patients with histopathologically confirmed parathyroid adenoma w

CONTEXT: Postoperative hypoparathyroidism is the most frequent complication of total thyroidectomy (transient form, 19-38%). Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging is validated for parathyroid perfusion assessment; its predictive value combined with strict in situ preservation has not been reported in Romania.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive performance of the Vidal Fortuny ICG score for transient postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
DESIGN: Prospective observational single-centre study (February 2024 - February 2025) at the National Institute of Endocrinology "C.I. Parhon", Buchare

OBJECTIVES: Precise preoperative localization of parathyroid gland lesion is essential for guiding surgery in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The aim of our study was to investigate the contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) characteristics of parathyroid gland adenoma (PGA) and to evaluate whether PGA can be differentiated from central cervical lymph nodes (CCLN).
METHODS: Fifty-four consecutive patients with PHPT were retrospectively enrolled and underwent preoperative imaging with high-resolution ultrasound (US) and CEUS, and underwent subsequent parathyroidectomy. One hundred seventy-fou

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) could lead to intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), which has now been identified as a major cause of death after trauma if it is not adequately diagnosed and properly treated within the first 24 hours. CT examination is widely preferred for urgent ICH diagnosis, which enables the fast identification and detection of ICH regions. However, the use of it requires the clinical interpretation by experts to identify the subtypes of ICH. Besides, it is unable to provide the details needed to conduct quantitative assessment, such as the volume and thickness of hemorrhagic lesion

Primary hyperparathyroidism in patients with tuberous sclerosis (TS) is extremely rare: only three cases have been reported previously, two of them in pediatric patients. An 11-year-old male patient with a clinical and molecular diagnosis of TS presented with mild symptomatic hypercalcemia in routine laboratory tests. Biochemical evaluation confirmed hypercalcemia with hypophosphatemia and inadequate parathyroid hormone levels, with radiological signs of hyperparathyroidism. Ultrasound demostrated hyperplasia of the left superior parathyroid gland, and a sestamibi and technetium-99m scintigram

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET) has been carried out for more than 20 years, but few studies on the anatomy of ET can be found in the literature. We performed this study to identify ET's surgical planes and anatomic landmarks by clinical anatomic research.
METHODS: The surgical planes and anatomic landmarks were observed through an endoscope in 83 consecutive cases during living ET by the anterior chest approach.
RESULTS: The appropriate procedure spaces were between the superficial fascia and the pectoralis major fascia on the anterior chest, and between the platysma and the super

BACKGROUND: Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by CDC73 gene mutations, predisposing individuals to primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), cemento-ossifying fibromas, and other neoplastic conditions. [18F]Fluorocholine PET/CT has emerged as a tool for localizing hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in pHPT, but its application in HPT-JT syndrome remains unreported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 15-year-old male presenting with severe hypercalcemia, increased PTH serum levels, and a history of cemento-ossifying fibroma remova

BACKGROUND: In patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), the importance of oxyphil cells for hormonal activity is uncertain.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed the histopathological findings of postoperative specimens from patients with pHPT (single gland disease). The indication for surgery was based on increased plasma intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentrations and the presence of symptoms typical of pHPT. To quantify approximate oxyphil cell content (OCC), we determined the percentage of oxyphil cells observed in each specimen. To quantify the approximat
