Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is a rare condition caused by spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak and volume depletion. It is initially misdiagnosed as a cause of an orthostatic headache, which is the most important symptom of the syndrome. It can be presented as one of four types: classic form, normal pressure form, normal pachymeninges form and acephalgic form. The diagnosis is made based on the clinical presentation, physical examination, typical cerebrospinal fluid and magnetic resonance imaging findings. We present a case of a 29-year-old woman with uncommon normal pressure form of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with transfusional iron overload develop iron deposits in the pituitary gland, which are associated with volume loss and HH. The purpose of this study was to characterize R2 and volumetric data in a healthy population for diagnostic use in patients with transfusional iron overload.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred healthy controls without iron overload between the ages of 2 and 48 were recruited to have MR imaging of the brain to assess their pituitary R2 and volume. Pituitary R2 was assessed with a 8-echo spin-echo sequence, and pituitary volumes, by a 3D s

CONTEXT: Sellar and parasellar masses present with overlapping clinical and radiological features ranging from asymptomatic incidental presentations and hormonal effects to compressive local mass effects. Pituitary masses are diagnosed with increased frequency with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) advancements and availability, but indications and diagnostic outcomes of MRI screening for sellar lesions are not defined. Although pituitary adenomas are the most frequently encountered sellar mass lesions, other etiologies should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a sellar mass.

During the last two decades a large number of genetically modified mouse lines with altered gonadotropin action have been generated. These mouse lines fall into three categories: the lack-of-function mice, gain-of-function mice, and the mice generated by breeding the abovementioned lines with other disease model lines. The mouse strains lacking gonadotropin action have elucidated the necessity of the pituitary hormones in pubertal development and function of gonads, and revealed the processes from the original genetic defect to the pathological phenotype such as hypo- or hypergonadotropic hypo

Prolactin (PRL) is a 23-kDa protein hormone that is synthesized mainly by the anterior pituitary gland. However, PRL can also be synthesized and secreted by extrapituitary tissues, particularly immune cells. A biallelic polymorphism (-1149 G/T) in the prolactin promoter has been shown to be functionally important, as modulation of prolactin expression has been associated with SLE in some populations. We have performed an association study using Mexican patients with SLE. We used qPCR to determine the SNP allele and genotype frequencies. We did not find statistically significant differences in

Metastasis from breast cancer to other parts of the body is very common, but the spread of the tumor to pituitary gland, especially to infandibulum, is a rare presentation. At the time of pituitary metastasis, a majority of the patients have clinical and radiological evidence of the disease. It seems that the posterior area of the gland is the most common site of metastasis, probably due to highly rich blood supply through the hypophyseal artery. The present report introduces a case of a 55-years-old woman presented with diabetes insipidus resulting from metastasis of the tumor to pituitary in

Professional boxers and other contact sport athletes are exposed to repetitive brain trauma that may affect motor functions, cognitive performance, emotional regulation and social awareness. The term of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was recently introduced to regroup a wide spectrum of symptoms such as cerebellar, pyramidal and extrapyramidal syndromes, impairments in orientation, memory, language, attention, information processing and frontal executive functions, as well as personality changes and behavioural and psychiatric symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging usually reveals hippoc

Wolfram syndrome (WS), also known as DIDMOAD (Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Optic Atrophy and Deafness), is a neurodegenerative disease with autosomal recessive inheritance with incomplete penetrance. DIDMOAD is a very rare disease with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 770,000 and it is believed to occur in 1 of 150 patients with juvenile-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Additionally, WS may also present with different endocrine and metabolic abnormalities such as anterior and posterior pituitary gland dysfunction. This mini-review summarizes the variable presentation of WS a

CONTEXT: Isolated central diabetes insipidus (CDI) can be the first manifestation of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), creating diagnostic dilemmas such as dysgerminoma and other inflammatory lesions.
METHOD: In 2010, the French national LCH registry had enrolled 1236 LCH patients under 18 yr of age. Isolated CDI was the initial presentation of LCH in 26 patients. We reviewed their clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features.
RESULTS: Median age at the diagnosis of CDI was 9.6 yr (1.8-16.3), and median follow-up after CDI diagnosis was 9.9 yr (3.5-26.6). In addition to CDI, two

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the genes encoding for GHRH receptor (GHRHR) and GH (GH1) are the most common cause of familial isolated GH deficiency (IGHD). GHRHR mutations are often associated with anterior pituitary hypoplasia (APH), but this has been reported almost exclusively in children older than 8 yr. We analyzed the GHRHR and measured pituitary size in a consanguineous family with the father and three of the five siblings with IGHD.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to find the mutated gene in a family with severe IGHD.
METHODS: We sequenced the whole GHRHR coding regions and the intro

OBJECTIVES: Oxytocin is released by the posterior pituitary gland during male orgasm. Additionally, the presence of an oxytocin receptor gene and protein expression in human corpus cavernosum is demonstrated, and it has contractile activity on the smooth muscle of the animal and human corpus cavernosum in vitro. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunoreactivity of oxytocin in corpus cavernosum of patients with organic erectile dysfunction and to compare it with healthy controls.
METHODS: Cavernous biopsies were obtained from 31 patients with erectile dysfunction and 11 patients wi

Because boys are four times more likely than girls to develop autism, the role of male hormones (androgens) has received considerable scrutiny. Some researchers implicate arginine vasopressin, an androgen-dependent hormone from the pituitary gland that elicits male behavior. Elevated vasopressin is also the most common cause of low blood sodium (hyponatremia)--most serious in the brains of children. Hyponatremia causes astrocytes to swell, then release the amino acids taurine and glutamine and their water to compensate. Taurin--the brain osmolyte/inhibitory neurotransmitter that suppresses vas

Chronic stress, in particular chronic psychosocial stress, is a risk factor in the aetiology of various psychopathologies including anxiety- and depression-related disorders. Therefore, recent studies have focussed on the development of social-stress paradigms, which are believed to be more relevant to the human situation than non-social-stress paradigms. The majority of these paradigms have been reported to increase both anxiety- and depression-related behaviour in rats or mice. However, in order to dissect the mechanisms underlying anxiety or depression, animal models are needed, which speci

We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and reliability of gamma-knife radiosurgery (GKR) in 22 patients with acromegaly at the Endocrinology-Metabolism Clinic of Cerrahpasa Medical School. We collected data retrospectively from hospital records on disease activity and other pituitary functions, pituitary MRI and visual fields, before GKR and 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months after GKR. The median follow-up duration after GKR was 60 months (interquartile range [IQR]: 24-60 months). The remission rate was 54.5% after the 60 months of follow-up. The median growth hormone (GH) level at 60 months after GK

Pituitary apoplexy is rare endocrine emergency which can occur due to infarction or haemorrhage of pituitary gland. This disorder most often involves a pituitary adenoma. Occasionally it may be the first manifestation of an underlying adenoma. There is conflicting data regarding which type of pituitary adenoma is prone for apoplexy. Some studies showed predominance of non-functional adenomas while some other studies showed a higher prevalence in functioning adenomas amongst which prolactinoma have the highest risk. Although pituitary apoplexy can occur without any precipitating factor in most

Although a relatively rare phenomenon, lymphocytic hypophysitis can represent a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. This condition was initially thought to be an autoimmune phenomenon occurring primarily in women in the postpartum state. It is now recognized as a disorder that can affect both men and women over a rather large age range, from young adults to the elderly, and may be linked to a number of autoimmune phenomena. We have reviewed the literature on lymphocytic hypophysitis, and added the detailed analysis of seven cases of presumed lymphocytic hypophysitis from our own ex

Prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) is considered to be a key mediator in migraine pathophysiology. PGE(2) acts via four receptors (EP(1)-EP(4)) but their distribution in the brain districts implicated in migraine has yet to be delineated. We quantified amount of mRNA and protein expression for the EP receptors in both peripheral and central structures involved in pain transmission and perception in migraine: dura mater, cerebral arteries, trigeminal ganglion, trigeminal nucleus caudalis, periaqueductal grey, thalamus, hypothalamus, cortex, pituitary gland, hippocampus and cerebellum. Parkinson's disease is now recognized as a major form of α-synucleinopathy involving both the central and peripheral nervous systems. However, no research has focused on the posterior pituitary lobe (PPL), despite the fact that this organ also plays an important role in systemic homeostasis. In the present study, we aimed to distinguish phosphorylated α-synuclein (pαSyn)-positive deposits in the PPL, as is observed in Lewy body- and non-Lewy body-related disorders. PαSyn deposits were immunohistochemically analyzed using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded PPL specimens obtained from 60 autopsy

Successful pregnancy and delivery is dependent upon normal function of the pituitary gland. Benign tumors of the pituitary are relatively common and may interfere with normal pregnancy in a variety of ways. Symptoms related to pituitary tumors can include headache, fatigue, and visual loss. Some may present dramatically with pituitary tumor apoplexy, mimicking subarachnoid hemorrhage, meningitis, or myocardial infarction. In this article, the types of tumors likely to become symptomatic during pregnancy are reviewed. The various options of management are determined by the stage of pregnancy an
