The Diagnosis and Clinical Significance of Paragangliomas in Unusual Locations.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine neoplasms, derived from paraganglia of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. They are most commonly identified in the head and neck, being most frequent in the carotid body, followed by jugulotympanic paraganglia, vagal nerve and ganglion nodosum, as well as laryngeal paraganglia. Abdominal sites include the well-known urinary bladder tumors that originate in the Organ of Zuckerkandl. However, other unusual sites of origin include peri-adrenal, para-aortic, inter-aortocaval, and paracaval retroperitoneal sites, as well as tumors in organs where

[Surgical treatment of vagal paragangliomas].

Vagal paragangliomas are much less frequent than carotid and jugulo-tympanic paragangliomas and, like these other forms, can be sporadic or familial. The familial forms usually occur as isolated tumors or within syndromic entities such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIA-B, Von Hippel- Lindau syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1. The genes causing the disease are located in three loci: SDHD (11q23), SDHC (1q21) and SDHB (1p36.1p35). Approximately one-third of apparently sporadic paragangliomas also show germline SDH mutations. In familial forms, the rate of multicentric tumors is up to 3

[Paraganglioma of the pancreas metastasized to the adrenal gland: a case report].

Paraganglioma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor arising from the neural crest, which includes tissues such as the adrenal medulla, carotid and aortic body, organs of Zuckerkandl, and other unnamed paraganglia. The head, neck, and retroperitoneum are the most common sites for paraganglioma. However, paraganglioma of the pancreas is extremely rare. We report our experience of this rare disease. A 70-year old female patient admitted for a pancreas tail mass detected by computed tomography (CT) scan checked for vague left flank pain. CT with contrast enhancement showed a 4.2-cm heterogeneously enhanc

Cross-sectional imaging of paragangliomas of the aortic body and other thoracic branchiomeric paraganglia.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to show the CT and MRI findings of paragangliomas of the aortic body and the great vessels of the mediastinum. CONCLUSION: Paragangliomas of the aortic body and the great vessels have a characteristic imaging appearance. They originate from known sites of the branchiomeric paraganglia such as the aortic body. Knowledge of the location of the aortic body and other paraganglia combined with an appreciation of the how these tumors grow and displace neighboring structures will suggest a potential diagnosis of mediastinal paraganglioma.

Immunohistochemical evidence for species-specific coexistence of catecholamines, serotonin, acetylcholine and nitric oxide in glomus cells of rat and guinea pig aortic bodies.

The aortic bodies are small paraganglia distributed along the vagus nerve and its branches in the vicinity of the aortic arch which, like the carotid bodies, act as arterial chemoreceptors. In the rat carotid body, corelease of ATP and acetylcholine (ACh) from glomus cells is considered to be the main mechanism mediating fast hypoxic chemotransmission while dopamine, serotonin, and nitric oxide (NO) exert modulating effects. The present study was aimed at determination of the endogenous sources of serotonin, ACh and NO within rat and guinea pig aortic bodies by immunohistochemical double- and

The distribution of presumptive thoracic paraganglionic tissue in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

The aortic-pulmonary regions (APR) of seven adult marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and the region of the right subclavian artery of a further three marmosets were diffusion-fixed with 10% buffered formol-saline solution. In both regions serial 5 microm sections were cut and stained by the Martius yellow, brilliant crystal scarlet and soluble blue method. Presumptive thoracic paraganglionic (PTP) tissue was only observed in the APR. PTP tissue was composed of small groups of cells that varied in size and number. The distribution of the groups of cells was extremely variable, so much so that it wo

Ultrastructural morphometric observations on the extramural aortico-pulmonary bodies of the domestic fowl.

The extramural aortico-pulmonary bodies of the domestic fowl were analysed in electron micrographs by point-counting morphometry. The Type I cell constituted about 34% of the total volume of the parenchyma, whereas the supporting cells (Type II cells, pericytes and Schwann cells) constituted about 26%. The blood capillaries occupied the lowest volume density of about 5%. The mitochondria and the dense-cored vesicles occupied about the same volume (8%) of the Type I cell cytoplasm. The results obtained in the present study are compared with other similar studies on the aortic and carotid bodies

The distribution of thoracic glomus tissue (aortic bodies) in the rat.

An inventory of the distribution of thoracic glomus tissue (thoracic chemoreceptor tissue, aortic bodies) has been derived from serial sections in foetal, newborn and adult rats. In contrast to other common experimental species, such as the cat and dog, aortic bodies are an inconstant feature and, on the whole, are scarce in the rat. These morphological findings correlate well with experimental studies, indicating an absence or paucity of thoracic chemoreceptor activity in the rat. The results are discussed in terms of their physiological and pathophysiological implications and a revised model

Cardiovascular responses to hypoxia in the spontaneously breathing cat: reflexes originating from carotid and aortic bodies.

The heart rate (fH) and systemic arterial pressure (Pa) responses to transient anoxemic and cytotoxic hypoxia were studied in 18 pentobarbitone-anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats, by applying N2 tests and i.v. injections of NaCN. Hyperventilation was accompanied by short-latency increases in Pa and fH; they persisted after bilateral vagotomy, sparing the aortic nerves. Acute section of carotid or aortic nerves in different sequences reduced both fH and Pa responses, the contribution of both pairs of nerves being similar. The recording of carotid chemosensory discharges showed transient

The neural crest: its relations with APUD and paraneuron concepts.

The neural crest cells give rise to a large variety of derivatives including neural, mesenchymal, APUD and/or paraneuron cell types. A better knowledge of these derivatives was partly achieved through studies using Le Douarin's quail/chick marker system. We review here evidences which were thus provided for a neural crest origin of calcitonin containing cells, carotid body, aortic paraganglia, adrenomedulla, and against a neurectodermal origin of enterogastric and respiratory tract endocrine cells. The role of neural crest cells in Pearse's APUD system is discussed. The results implicate that

Functional tumors of the organ of Zuckerkandl.

Chromaffin-reacting pheochromocytomas of the adrenal medulla are the most frequently encountered functional paraganglionic neoplasms. However, extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas as well as non-chromaffin paragangliomas, including those of the carotid body and glomus jugulare, may produce symptoms from catecholamine secretion. One of the extra-adrenal sites from which these tumors arise is from a collection of para-aortic, paraganglion cells around the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery. This collection of paraganglia was described in fetuses by Zuckerkandl in 1901 and has subsequently been

Light, fluorescence and electron microscopic studies of rabbit subclavian glomera.

The subclavian glomera (aortic bodies) of young New Zealand white rabbits were studied with the light, fluorescence, and electron microscopes. Two cell types were identified: type I, granule-containing (chief) cells, and type II, agranular (sustentacular) cells. The type I cells possessed large nuclei, the normal complement of cytoplasmic organelles and numerous electron-opaque cytoplasmic granules. The type II cells were agranular with attenuated cytoplasmic processes which partially or completely ensheathed the type I cells. The glomera were well vascularized. Capillary endothelial cells con
