Rethinking Retromandibular Vein Assessment in Parotid Tumors: Highlighting the Necessity of 3D Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is an infectious disease with two polar forms, tuberculoid leprosy (TL) and lepromatous leprosy (LL), which are dominated by T-helper (Th) 1 and Th2 cells, respectively. High concentrations of prostaglandin E2 produced by the inducible enzyme cyclooxygenase type 2 (COX-2) in LL could inhibit Th1 cytokine production, contributing to T-cell anergy. OBJECTIVES: To compare the COX-2 expression in LL and TL. METHODS: Skin biopsies from 40 leprosy patients (LL, n = 20; TL, n = 20) were used to determine by immunohistochemistry and automated morphometry the percentage of COX-2 i

Factors associated with delayed diagnosis of leprosy in an endemic area in Northeastern Brazil: a cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to investigate the factors related to the individual and the health system that contribute to delayed diagnosis of leprosy in an endemic area in the Northeastern Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study of 120 individuals with leprosy. Demographic and clinical data and information on the factors related to the individual and the health system that contribute to delayed diagnosis of leprosy were obtained. Delayed diagnosis in months was estimated for each participant by interviews. A multivariate Poisson's regression analysis was performed between the outcome and the independent

Half a Century in Hiding: A Unique Case of Tuberculoid Leprosy with an Unprecedented Incubation Period.

BACKGROUND Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a neglected tropical disease with low prevalence in the United States. The disease's long incubation period can cause delayed presentation, and most affected individuals have a history of travel or work in leprosy-endemic regions. The immune response to Mycobacterium leprae determines the clinical characteristics of leprosy, with tuberculoid leprosy being characterized by well-defined granulomas and involvement of peripheral nerves. The recommended treatment is a combination of dapsone and rifampin for 12 months. CASE REPORT A 78-year-old

Pressure Stockings for Edematous Feet in the Lepra Reaction: An Inexpensive Patronage.

Leprosy has been known for its wide range of peripheral nerve and tissue involvement and causing disabilities. Early diagnosis and treatment with multi-drug therapy can save lives and limbs and prevent disabilities. However, management and drug therapy are usually lengthy and full of ups and downs of side effects. Further, the lepra reaction is frequently noted during management, requiring immunosuppression and leading to associated side effects. Limb edema per se due to leprosy is unusual and mostly a symptom of a reactional state. There is no specific management for edema in such cases, and

A case report on imaging findings of rare segmental necrotizing granulomatous neuritis of leprosy involving ulnar nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Segmental necrotizing granulomatous neuritis (SNGN) is a rare complication of leprosy involving peripheral nerves. It can appear alone in cases of pure neuritic leprosy or in combination with cutaneous lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old female diagnosed with borderline tuberculoid leprosy who received prior multidrug therapy presented 2 years later with occasional pain and tingling sensations along the inner aspect of her right arm and forearm. Imaging findings suggested SNGN, which was corroborated by cytopathological examination. She was considered relapsed from leprosy

Leprosy as a cause of nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Leprosy, also known as Hansen disease, is an airborne spread disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae) which commonly presents with skin lesions, peripheral neuropathy, and ocular involvement. This report describes a patient who presented with epiphora secondary to chronic nasolacrimal duct obstruction four years after completing antimicrobial treatment for tuberculoid leprosy. At the time of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), the lacrimal sac demonstrated chronic dacryocystitis with granulomatous inflammation and a Fite positive staining bacterial rod-like structure. Pathologica

Cellular and molecular determinants of bacterial burden in leprosy granulomas revealed by single-cell multimodal omics.

BACKGROUND: Which cell populations that determine the fate of bacteria in infectious granulomas remain unclear. Leprosy, a granulomatous disease with a strong genetic predisposition, caused by Mycobacterium leprae infection, exhibits distinct sub-types with varying bacterial load and is considered an outstanding disease model for studying host-pathogen interactions. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA and immune repertoire sequencing on 11 healthy controls and 20 patients with leprosy, and integrated single-cell data with genome-wide genetic data on leprosy. Multiplex immunohistochemistry,

Lucio's phenomenon in a non-endemic region: A case report.

Leprosy remains a persistent health challenge in endemic regions with cases rising in non-endemic regions such as North America. Patients with leprosy present with a variety of symptoms including limited skin lesions in tuberculoid leprosy to extensive lesions and high bacterial proliferation in lepromatous leprosy. This case report details a 77-year-old Canadian man of South Asian descent with lepromatous leprosy and Lucio's phenomenon in Western Canada. The patient exhibited widespread retiform purpura on the limbs with localized ulcerations, erosions, and necrosis on the left hand and feet,

A Case of Lepromatous Leprosy Presenting With Multiple Morphologies in Philadelphia.

Leprosy is an uncommon chronic mycobacterial infection in the United States caused by Mycobacterium leprae. There are two major forms of the infection, lepromatous leprosy and tuberculoid leprosy, with borderline forms of each. Leprosy is even more uncommon in the Northeastern United States and can present with various symptoms and skin findings, including erythematous or hypopigmented patches or plaques with accompanying hypoesthesia or anesthesia, anhidrosis, or alopecia. We present the case of a 29-year-old woman with a progressive rash with multiple morphologies accompanied by neuropathy a

Childhood leprosy in Buenos Aires: four cases report.

Childhood leprosy, which affects children up to 14 years old, is characterized by a delay in diagnosis since it is usually confused with other dermatoses. Its presence in a child is a relevant epidemiological indicator since it signals active disease transmission. We present 4 patients between 5 and 14 years old who attended a public hospital in Buenos Aires -two patients with borderline tuberculoid leprosy, one with lepromatous leprosy, and one with indeterminate leprosy. The World Health Organization provides therapy for people between 10 and 14 but does not consider children under 10. Comparing Amyloid Imaging Normalization Strategies for Alzheimer's Disease Classification using an Automated Machine Learning Pipeline.

We have investigated the expression of chemokines and their receptors in leprosy skin lesions using immunohistochemistry. Skin biopsies from 25 leprosy patients across the leprosy spectrum, 11 patients undergoing type I reversal reactions and four normal donors were immunostained by ABC peroxidase method using antibodies against CC and CXC chemokines and their receptors. Using an in situ hybridization technique we have also studied the expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), RANTES and interleukin (IL)-8 chemokines mRNA in leprosy skin lesions. Chemokines and receptor express

A Case of Borderline Tuberculoid Leprosy With Type One Lepra Reaction.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. The variants that can be identified include tuberculoid (TT), borderline tuberculoid (BT), mid-borderline (BB), borderline lepromatous (BL), and lepromatous forms (LL). Type one lepra reactions are delayed hypersensitivity reactions that are often observed in borderline variants due to an unstable immunological response. They can exacerbate skin lesions and neuritis, leading to a higher risk of disabilities and deformities. Early detection and management would play a

Psoriasis and Leprosy: An Arcane Relationship.

PURPOSE: Psoriasis (Ps) and leprosy are chronic inflammatory skin disorders, characterised by enhanced innate and adaptive immunity. Ps and leprosy rarely coexist. The molecular immune mechanism of the Ps and leprosy rarely coexistence is unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed on 20 patients with Ps, 5 adults with lepromatous leprosy (L-lep), and 5 patients with tuberculoid leprosy (T-lep) to analyse the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between them. Moreover, the biological mechanism of Ps and leprosy was explored by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes
