Cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx (LOCP) represent a substantial public health challenge worldwide. Using GLOBOCAN national estimates of incidence, detailed cancer registry data from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, and population statistics from the United Nations, the authors report the distribution of new cases of LOCP cancers in 185 countries by sex in 2022. Age-standardized incidence rates were calculated. For countries lacking registry data, regional averages from high-quality registries were used to impute subsite-specific estimates. Worldwide, 758,000 people were diagnos

INTRODUCTION: There is growing concern about rising cancer incidence among adults younger than 50 years. This collaborative study within the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN) aimed to examine cancer incidence trends in young adults in Spain.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This population-based observational study used data from 15 cancer registries. All newly diagnosed cancer cases in individuals aged 20-49 years between 1993 and 2018 were included. For each sex and cancer site, truncated age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000 person-years were calculated using the European standard

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity is an important determinant of treatment selection and in-hospital complications in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and thyroid cancer (TC), yet population-based evidence on this relationship remains limited.
METHODS: We analyzed nationwide Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) data from 1,552,028 inpatient HNC and TC treatments of patients aged ≥30 years in Germany between 2005 and 2021. The aim was to characterize the association of comorbidity and severe treatment-related procedure-coded inpatient events (IEs) with gender, age, tumor subsite, and treatment type.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Severe oral mucositis is widely viewed as a transient toxicity of antineoplastic therapy. Whether its long-term consequences differ between cancers that directly damage the upper aerodigestive tract (cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx [CLOP]) and systemic hematologic malignancies is unknown. The aim of this study was to compare lifetime risks of mortality, dysphagia, malnutrition, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease in propensity-score-matched survivors of CLOP cancer versus leukemia with and without a history of ulcerative oral mucositis.
METHODS: Pop

Neoplastic malignant tumors originating from inside the upper aerodigestive tract are referred to as lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal malignancies. This study aimed to analyze the hospitalization profile for malignant neoplasms of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx in Australia. This was a longitudinal ecological study that utilized the National Hospitals Data Collection in Australia database between 1998 and 2023. Hospitalization data were identified using the ICD codes C00-C14. Between 1998 and 2023, Australia reported a total of 160,055 hospitalization episodes. A large proportion of these a

Opoid dependency (OD) is associated with adverse clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients; nevertheless, the understanding of OD and its impact on cancer patients remains restricted. Alongside addressing the symptoms related to disease, hospitalized patients with OD also grapple with mental illness (MI) challenges and the risk of infectious consequences (ICs), which remain unrecognized in cancer patients. We utilized national inpatient database to examine patient and clinical characteristics among renal cell carcinomas (RCC), prostate cancers (PC) and cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pha

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Social determinants of health (SDOHs) are especially impactful with respect to emergency reliance among patients with cancer.
METHODS: To better predict the extent to which SDOHs affect emergency admissions in homeless patients with metastatic disease, we employed machine learning models, Lasso, ridge, random forest (RF), and elastic net (EN) regression. We also examined prostate cancer (PC), breast cancer (BC), lung (LC) cancer, and cancers of the lip, oral cavity, and pharynx (CLOP) for association between key SDOH variables-homelessness and living alone-and clinical

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) affects multiple organs progressively, leading to a shortened life expectancy. This study aimed to identify the complications that are prominent in each age group by comparing 28,082 patients with NF1 and 84,246 matched controls. Benign and malignant neoplasms along with neurological complications were the primary contributors to hospital use across most age groups. Respiratory and circulatory disorders were a common cause of hospital use in children and older adults, respectively. Except for soft tissue and central nervous system-originated malignancies, which a

BACKGROUND: The role of viral agents in the development of head and neck cancers has remained controversial. While markers of viral origin have been isolated from oral cancer tissues, a causative relationship has yet to be shown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between head and neck cancers and Herpes simplex virus, one of the most common viral infections of the oral orifice.
METHODS: Here, we conducted a retrospective analysis of two age- and gender-matched cohorts extracted from the real-world database TriNetX on March 10th, 2023, each consisting of 249,272 patients w

Wildfires have devastating effects on society and public health. However, little evidence from population-based cohort has been performed to analyze the relationship of wildfire-related PM2.5, an important component of wildfire smoke, with cancer-specific mortality. We aimed to explore this relationship and identify vulnerable populations in UK with lower levels of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure. The study consisted of 492394 participants (age: 38-73 years) recruited by UK Biobank during 2004-2010. The cumulative wildfire-related PM2.5 within 10 kilometers of residence over three years was us

BACKGROUND: Discharge against medical advice (DAMA) disrupts continuity of care and is associated with increased readmission rates, morbidity, and mortality. While extensively studied in general hospital populations, its prevalence and associated factors in cancer patients, where treatment adherence is critical for outcomes, remain underexplored.
METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study analyzed anonymized data from the IQVIA hospital database, including cancer patients hospitalized in 36 German hospitals between January 2019 and December 2023. Multivariate logistic regression assesse
