Double gallbladder: a case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Double gallbladder is a rare congenital anomaly occurring in 1 in 4000 births, often found incidentally during surgery. It is classified by Boyden into bilobed gallbladder with a single cystic duct (vesica fellea divisa) or true duplication with separate cystic ducts (vesica fellea duplex). CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old male presented with intermittent right upper quadrant abdominal pain for 2 months. Examination revealed icteric sclera and deranged liver function tests. Ultrasonography showed a contracted gallbladder with a dilated common bile duct and a calcu

Ultrasound reliability for biliary atresia diagnoses in children: a single-center study.

BACKGROUND: Biliary atresia (BA) is a lfe-threatening neonatal liver disease characterized by inflammation and obstruction of bile ducts. Identifying the most reliable and valid ultraaound (US) parameter or combination of parameters can enhance noninvasive diagnosis accuracy, potentially reducing unnecessary surgeries and treatment delays. We aimed to detect the mosi reliable and valid US parameter or combination of parameters to diagnose BA, thereby minimizing unnecessary surgical exploration or treatment delays. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study on cholestatic pediatric patie

[A Case Report of Pancreatic Adenosquamous Carcinoma in a Patient with Pancreaticobiliary Maljunction].

We report a rare case of pancreatic adenosquamous carcinoma(PASC)associated with pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM). An elderly woman in her 80s presented with epigastric pain and anorexia. CT revealed a mass at the distal bile duct and pancreatic head, with a nodular lesion in the gallbladder fundus. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)revealed a distal bile duct stricture and a common channel between the pancreatic and bile ducts, suggesting distal cholangiocarcinoma or pancreatic cancer with PBM. PET-CT demonstrated FDG accumulation around the distal bile duct- pancreatic

Primary percutaneous stenting above the ampulla versus endoscopic drainage for unresectable malignant hilar biliary obstruction (TESLA RCT): study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with malignant hilar biliary obstruction typically present with painless jaundice. They commonly have perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA), but also intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, and metastases to the liver hilum can present with hilar biliary obstruction. Endoscopic biliary drainage is the standard of care in most centers. Many patients develop drainage-related complications after endoscopic biliary drainage for malignant hilar biliary obstruction, in particular cholangitis, resulting in reinterventions, clinical deterioration and a high mortality ra

Dynamics of compartment-specific proteomic landscapes of hepatotoxic and cholestatic models of liver fibrosis.

Accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in liver fibrosis is associated with changes in protein abundance and composition depending upon etiology of the underlying liver disease. Current efforts to unravel etiology-specific mechanisms and pharmacological targets rely on several models of experimental fibrosis. Here, we characterize and compare dynamics of hepatic proteome remodeling during fibrosis development and spontaneous healing in experimental mouse models of hepatotoxic (carbon tetrachloride [CCl4] intoxication) and cholestatic (3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine [DDC] feeding

A case report of gallstone ileus caused by biliary-intestinal fistula: Multidetector computed tomography features analysis.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Gallstone ileus is a mechanical intestinal obstruction caused by gallstones or stones from the common bile duct entering the intestinal canal through a biliary-intestinal fistula and becoming impacted. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scanning is the most important auxiliary diagnostic method for this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of gallstone ileus involving an elderly female patient and analyze the characteristics of the MDCT images: atrophic cholecystitis, gallstones, the formation of a local duodenal-gallbladder fistula, pneumatos

Gallbladder ascariasis in Kabul-focus on ultrasound and conservative therapy: a case report.

The most frequent human intestinal nematode is Ascaris lumbricoides. Ascariasis is one of the most prevalent intestinal illnesses in underdeveloped nations, including Afghanistan. It affects over 25% of the world's population and causes about 20 000 fatalities annually due to its unfavorable clinical course. In endemic locations, 50%-60% of pediatric admissions to surgical emergency rooms are caused by A. lumbricoides. Due to the cystic duct's narrowness and tortuousness, migration of the worm to the gallbladder is less common than migration to the bile duct. When it does, acalculous cholecyst

INTRODUCTION: A right-sided round ligament (RSRL) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the umbilical vein being connected to the right paramedian trunk. As it is associated with intrahepatic vascular anomalies, it poses special difficulties in hepatic resection, and an accurate understanding of those anomalies is indispensable. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old man visited a health clinic with the chief complaint of jaundice. Hyperbilirubinemia and impaired liver function were detected upon laboratory examination. Therefore, the patient was referred to our hospital for further examin

Ectopic Pancreatic Tissue in the Gallbladder Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Rare Case.

Ectopic pancreatic tissue (EPT) is a rare clinical condition characterized by the presence of pancreatic tissue without any anatomical or vascular connection to the main pancreas. We aim to present a highly unusual case of EPT (fewer than 40 reported cases in the literature), located in the wall of the gallbladder. A 41-year-old female presented with episodes of right upper quadrant and epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. Diagnostic imaging revealed multiple gallstones, with the largest measuring 12 mm. The gallbladder wall was normal in thickness, and there were no abnormalities in the liv

Exclusive liver/serosa invasion as a better prognostic indicator in T3 gallbladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: T3 gallbladder cancer includes diverse invasive tumors. However, distinct prognostic outcomes may be observed among T3 gallbladder cancer confined to a localized range despite sharing the same classification. METHODS: We analyzed patients with T3 gallbladder cancer who underwent surgery from 2002 to 2021. They were divided into 4 groups on the basis of the invasion site: liver, serosa, extrahepatic bile duct, and adjacent organs. We compared their clinicopathologic, perioperative, and prognostic data. RESULTS: We identified 216 patients with T3 gallbladder cancer. The median surv

Pancreaticobiliary Maljunction With a Non-Dilated Extrahepatic Bile Duct Masked by Adenomyomatosis: A Potential Cause of Unresectable Gallbladder Carcinoma.

Adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder (ADM) is generally considered benign. The presented cases were initially diagnosed with ADM via ultrasound during an annual health check-up and monitored for several years without further investigations due to the absence of significant changes or symptoms. Subsequently, one case was diagnosed with pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM) with a non-dilated extrahepatic bile duct (EBD) after symptom onset, and underwent prophylactic laparoscopic cholecystectomy to avoid the risk of carcinogenesis. Although the other case remained asymptomatic, ultrasound later re

Parasitic Gallbladder Infection: Case Study of Biliary Clonorchiasis in a Non-Endemic Region.

BACKGROUND Clonorchis sinensis is a common liver fluke that typically inhabits the bile ducts, with infections primarily reported in endemic regions such as Northeast China, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Diagnosing parasitic infections of the biliary system can be challenging, particularly because their clinical presentation often overlaps with that of more common conditions such as acute or chronic cholecystitis. In regions where such parasites are not endemic, these infections are often overlooked, potentially leading to delayed or inappropriate treatment. Increased awareness is therefore esse

Extracellular Vesicles as Biomarkers in Chronic Hepatobiliary Diseases: An Overview of Their Interplay.

Hepatobiliary diseases, which include disorders of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts, remain a major global health concern. A significant proportion of deaths worldwide are attributed to hepatic diseases, accounting for 4% of the total global mortality in 2023. Among benign hepatobiliary diseases, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease is the most prevalent liver pathology, with a concerning rise in incidence, while it is recognized as the leading cause of liver transplantation in the United States. However, there is a notable rise over time in cases of autoimmune hepato
