The mortality profile of female nurses and teachers in British Columbia (BC) was examined using age-standardized proportional mortality ratios (PMRs) calculated for the period 1950-1984. Lowered overall mortality among nurses was seen for degenerative heart disease and for cerebrovascular accidents. Significantly elevated PMR values were observed for cancer of the breast and ovary in nurses of age 20-65 years. 5'-Deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR) is believed to be metabolized to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) by pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase (PyNPase). The concentration of S-100b protein in thyroid carcinoma tissue was three to five times higher than in normal thyroid tissue and thyroid adenoma. The cancer mortality experience from 1964 to 1973 of employees of the Imperial Oil Limited was examined in a cohort study. The results of fibre gastroscopy in 100 patients with gastric polyp are reported. The polyps were removed in 38 patients. All cases were followed up. No malignant transformation of the polyp was demonstrable in any of the cases. The polypous growth proved to be early gastric carcinoma in two cases, neurogenic sarcoma in one case. The polyp was associated with gastric carcinoma in 11 cases, with gastric sarcoma in one case, and with tumours of other digestive organs in five cases. It has been concluded that 1. diagnosis and correct assessment of gastric polyps rest on the evidence of endoscopy.
