Beyond the pleura: National trends in mesothelioma mortality by anatomical site in Spain, 1999-2024.

OBJECTIVES: Mesothelioma mortality continues to reflect asbestos exposure because of its long latency. While previous Spanish studies focused primarily on pleural disease, this study assessed mesothelioma mortality across the ICD-10 C45 category in Spain from 1999 to 2024. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based time-trend study was conducted using mortality data (ICD-10 C45) from the Spanish National Statistics Institute. Age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) were calculated using the 2013 European Standard Population. Temporal trends and sex-specific parallelism were evaluated using Jo

When the Tumor Disappears, Must the Larynx Follow?

REMATCH, a single-institution phase II study, evaluated reduced-volume surgery in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer responding to neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy. Two-year disease-free survival was 90%, with universal laryngeal preservation. The trial advances organ preservation by reducing the extent and intensity of local therapy rather than substituting modalities.

[Advanced Enteric-type Thymic Adenocarcinoma with Axillary Lymph Node
Oligometastasis: A Case Report].

Enteric‑type thymic adenocarcinoma (ETAC) is a rare subtype of thymic carcinoma. It shares highly similar histological and immunophenotypic features with intestinal adenocarcinoma, and is therefore prone to being misdiagnosed as metastatic carcinoma of gastrointestinal origin. Herein, we report a case of advanced ETAC with axillary lymph node oligometastasis. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and gastrointestinal endoscopy were performed to rule out primary gastrointestinal malignancy. The patient underwent median sternotomy with extended thymectomy, which effectively r

Dysregulated thymus-ovary axis promotes virtual memory T cell polarization to aggravate PMOS pathology.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is traditionally attributed to dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but the contribution of extra-reproductive organs remains unclear. Here, we identify a thymus-ovary pathway linking androgen excess to ovarian inflammation. Androgen receptor signaling in thymic stromal cells induces early thymic involution and impairs thymic output before overt reproductive pathology emerges. Athymic mice and Rag1-/- mice with preserved thymic stroma are comparably resistant to PMOS-like pathology, supporting an essential role for thymus-deriv

Indications, procedural standards, and training requirements for flexible nasolaryngoscopy in pulmonology - a Delphi study protocol.

Flexible nasolaryngoscopy (FNL) is a well-established, minimally invasive procedure for assessing the nasal passages, nasopharynx, and larynx. Its role in pulmonology is expanding, particularly for evaluating vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction, chronic cough, and other upper airway conditions relevant to the "united airways" model of care. However, no consensus-based guidance currently exists on the indications, procedural standards, or training requirements for FNL performed by pulmonologists. This protocol describes a modified two-round Delphi study that will survey an in

B-lines and Comet-tail Artifacts in Lung Ultrasound: Mechanisms and Clinical Implications.

The diagnostic utility of lung ultrasound (LUS) relies on the interpretation of sonographic artifacts, necessitating a clear distinction between "comet-tail artifacts" and "ring-down artifacts (i.e., B-lines)." However, these two types of artifacts are frequently confused in clinical practice. LUS has been validated as a highly accurate technique for both qualitative diagnosis and quantitative assessment of alveolar-interstitial pathologies. Although B-lines can be detected in a variety of pulmonary conditions, characteristic variations in the pleural line provide valuable clues for differenti

Thyroid and Parathyroid Dysfunction Following Larynx-Trachea-Thyroid-Parathyroid Allotransplantation.

Larynx-trachea-thyroid-parathyroid allotransplantation can restore essential laryngeal functions, but postoperative endocrine changes remain poorly understood. This study assessed thyroid and parathyroid function in four recipients. All developed early thyroid hormone alterations consistent with euthyroid sick syndrome, followed by variable endocrine outcomes. Two experienced thyrotoxicosis associated temporally with graft rejection, while another developed hypothyroidism and elevated parathyroid hormone during late rejection. Transient parathyroid hormone suppression was also observed. In con

SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated thoracic tumors with rare nasal cavity and gluteal metastases: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated thoracic tumor (SMARCA4-UT) is an extremely aggressive malignancy that primarily affects the lung and mediastinum. It predominantly occurs in males with a heavy smoking history, and the associated survival typically does not exceed 1 year. Currently, no standard treatment regimen has been established for this disease, and a limited response to conventional chemotherapy has been noted in SMARCA4-UT. Some studies have suggested that multimodal management combining immunotherapy with chemotherapy and local consolidation therapy may offer a certain su

Thoracoscopic Management of Recurrent Pneumothorax in an Adult Patient with Cri du Chat Syndrome and Severe Scoliosis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cri du chat syndrome (CdCS) is a rare genetic disorder that can be associated with scoliosis and marked thoracic deformity. Although scoliosis has been reported to be associated with an increased incidence of pneumothorax, reports of pneumothorax surgery in patients with severe scoliosis associated with CdCS are extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of recurrent pneumothorax in an adult patient with CdCS associated with severe scoliosis who was successfully treated by thoracoscopic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man with CdCS presented with severe scoliosis, intell

Timing of recurrence in papillary thyroid carcinoma: Analysis of recurrent cases after initial surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) generally has an excellent prognosis; however, recurrence may occur over a wide range of postoperative periods, and factors associated with the timing of recurrence remain unclear. Previous studies have evaluated early or late recurrence using predefined time points or specific recurrence patterns. We aimed to evaluate the association between clinicopathological and treatment-related factors and the timing of recurrence across the entire postoperative period. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 69 patients with recurrent PTC among 677 patients who

Neuroendocrine Tumors (NETs) of the Larynx.

To review the current state of knowledge regarding neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the larynx, with a particular focus on their epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinico-pathological features, immunohistochemical profile, and differential diagnostics. Narrative review. Diagnostic criteria for laryngeal NETs were recently defined in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors, which newly introduces the entity of NET, grade 3 (G3 NET). However, some of these criteria are still considered provisional. The most common NET of the larynx is the G2 NET. These tumors typically aff

PET Tumour Segmentation in Head and Neck Cancer: Reproducibility, Reader Dependence and Concordance with CT-Defined Tumour Volume in a 154-Patient Cohort.

Purpose: Volumetric PET biomarkers carry substantial prognostic value in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), yet their clinical implementation is hampered by segmentation heterogeneity. A fundamental and unresolved question is which segmentation method is most suitable for routine clinical use, both for a reader experienced in PET segmentation and for a reader without PET segmentation experience, such as an ENT surgeon or a radiation oncologist. This study addressed this question by assessing the intra- and interobserver reproducibility of four PET segmentation methods in MIM Maestr

Laryngeal vs. Esophageal Acid-Mediated Injury in Bulimia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a psychiatric eating disorder that can potentially be life-threatening and is characterized by recurrent binging and/or purging. During purging episodes that involve self-induced vomiting, laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) can occur as gastric acid is forcefully pushed through the esophageal sphincter and anteriorly to the acid-sensitive laryngopharyngeal tissue. While the esophageal mucosal lining can tolerate repeated exposure to acid before sustaining significant erosion, the laryngeal mucosa exhibits greater sensitivity, reacting to even mild exposure with inflammation

Interleukin-37 overexpression enhances the therapeutic efficacy of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in atopic dermatitis by activating autophagy and improving skin barrier dysfunction.

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic option because of their immunomodulatory and tissue-repair capabilities in the treatment of Atopic dermatitis (AD). However, their efficacy is limited by cellular senescence and functional decline. Interleukin-37 (IL-37), an anti-inflammatory cytokine, has shown potential in mitigating inflammation and enhancing skin barrier function. This study investigated whether IL-37 overexpression in ADSCs could augment their therapeutic effects in AD and the underlying mechanism. Lentiviral-mediated IL-37 overexpressi

ESIPT-induced selective tryptophan detection: a multifunctional probe for biomacromolecule binding with theoretical and biocompatibility studies.

A coumarin-based fluorescent ligand, 4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbaldehyde (HCC), was synthesized and evaluated for the selective detection of tryptophan (Trp) among the nine essential amino acids. The probe exhibited remarkable selectivity toward Trp through an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism facilitated by intramolecular hydrogen transfer. Upon interaction with Trp, HCC forms an HCC-Trp complex (HCP), which undergoes a transient tautomeric transformation between enol (E) and keto (K) forms via an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process

Casein Hydrolysate Peptides Attenuate Immunosenescence and Inflammaging in a D-Galactose-Induced Mouse Model of Aging.

Aging populations worldwide face increasing burdens from physiological deterioration. Bioactive peptides derived from milk proteins have attracted interest for their biological activities, yet systematic evidence against aging remains limited. Here, we investigated casein hydrolysates in a D-galactose-induced murine aging model. Following eight weeks of oral administration at graded doses, we quantified systemic oxidative stress markers, inflammatory cytokine profiles, hepatic and cerebral histopathology, and multiple immune competence parameters. Our data demonstrate that casein peptides dose

Chemical Profiling and Antimicrobial Prospective of Commercial Essential Oils from Selected Lamiaceae Genera.

Essential oils (EOs) of Lamiaceae family have been reported to possess antimicrobial properties. However, commercial preparations of EOs are often of variable quality and inconsistent efficacy due to adulteration and chemotypic variation. This study comprehensively profiled six retail Lamiaceae EOs (Origanum vulgare, O. vulgare subsp. hirtum, Thymus vulgaris, Lavandula angustifolia, Salvia officinalis, and Melissa officinalis) available in Türkiye using GC-MS, complemented by principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) to discern chemotypic relationships.
