Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. The variants that can be identified include tuberculoid (TT), borderline tuberculoid (BT), mid-borderline (BB), borderline lepromatous (BL), and lepromatous forms (LL). Type one lepra reactions are delayed hypersensitivity reactions that are often observed in borderline variants due to an unstable immunological response. They can exacerbate skin lesions and neuritis, leading to a higher risk of disabilities and deformities. Early detection and management would play a

Leprosy is a chronic infectious granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, primarily affecting the skin and the peripheral nerves. Variable involvement of internal organs and mucosa has been reported with incidence ranging from 19% to 60%, more commonly seen in lepromatous spectrum of leprosy (LL and BL). We report a case of borderline tuberculoid (BT) leprosy presenting with oral mucosal lesions involving the gingival mucosa and lower lip.

Since the introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT), various disabilities/morbidities due to leprosy have been prevented. However, there is a subset of patients in whom the skin lesions do not resolve completely or remain unchanged despite a full course of MDT, which is a great source of anxiety to the patient and their family members. Hence, we tried to ascertain the putative causes and risk factors of persistent skin lesions (PSLs) by analyzing the clinical, histopathological, bacteriological, and drug resistance patterns. This is a retrospective, cohort study wherein 35 patients who had PSLs

Cholesteatoma is a progressive and destructive middle ear disease that can lead to severe complications such as hearing loss, bone erosion, and even intracranial infections if left untreated. Accurate preoperative evaluation is crucial for the successful surgical management of this condition. High-Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) has become the gold standard in evaluation of extent of cholesteatoma due to its ability to reveal anatomical details of the middle ear. This study compares the accuracy of clinical and preoperative HRCT findings with intraoperative observations in patients with

Background Slightly more than half the total number of childhood leprosy cases worldwide are from India. Aim To analyze the clinical and epidemiological trends of childhood leprosy over 20 years in a tertiary care hospital. Methods We retrieved the medical records of all children less than 15 years of age registered in the leprosy clinic between April 1998 and March 2018. We tabulated and analyzed data pertaining to demographic details along with clinical findings such as cutaneous lesions, nerves involved, sensory loss, deformities, reactions, smear status, histopathology and treatment. Macrocheilia, as an initial manifestation of leprosy, is uncommon. We present a case of a 50-year-old female, with lower lip swelling, initially diagnosed as Cheilitis Granulomatosa Miescher. Unresponsiveness to local intralesional corticosteroids necessitated further evaluation. Repeat tissue sampling yielded a confirmatory diagnosis of borderline tuberculoid leprosy, which was managed successfully.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is rare in the United Kingdom (UK), but migration from endemic countries results in new cases being diagnosed each year. We documented the clinical presentation of leprosy in a non-endemic setting.
METHODS: Demographic and clinical data on all new cases of leprosy managed in the Leprosy Clinic at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London between 1995 and 2018 were analysed.
RESULTS: 157 individuals with a median age of 34 (range 13-85) years were included. 67.5% were male. Patients came from 34 different countries and most contracted leprosy before migrating to the UK. E

Leprosy and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) often mimic clinical features of connective tissue disease (CTD). They can present such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, or overlap syndromes and it sometimes creates confusion about the diagnosis. Serology may not be enough to differentiate the two and effective tissue biopsies are often the answer. We report the case of a 38-year-old female, who presented clinically with features of multisystem involvement suspected to be CTD, but was found to have dual infection: HIV and borderline tuberculoid leprosy.

BACKGROUND: One of the indicators of achieved leprosy control is lower new cases of leprosy with grade 2 disability (G2D), while zero new pediatric case with G2D is one of the targets of The Global Leprosy Strategy. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of leprosy in children with G2D from seven provincial hospitals in Indonesia, spanning a period of five years.
METHODS: This was a descriptive and retrospective study with cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the medical records of leprosy-affected children in seven provincial hospitals in Indonesia between January 2014 a

BACKGROUND: Individuals with relapses of leprosy should be monitored carefully, however, with respect to paucibacillary (PB) leprosy, it is sometimes difficult to make a definitive diagnosis of relapse, because the bacillary index is often negative. To evaluate the usefulness of cytokine profiling in a patient with relapsed PB leprosy who tested negative for anti-phenolic glycolipid-I antibodies, we analyzed the Mycobacterium leprae protein-induced cytokine expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of the patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 89-year-old-male relapsed PB patient, first treate

RosaiDorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, self-limiting disease of uncertain etiology involving lymph nodes as well as extranodal sites. Isolated or pure cutaneous RDD (PCRDD) without lymph node involvement is very unusual accounting for only 3% of all described cases of RDD. The clinical features of PCRDD are quite different from RDD according to the literature on extranodal RDD, thereby emphasizing that PCRDD is a distinct clinical entity. Histopathology remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of both systemic and PCRDD with the presence of characteristic emperipolesis observed in histiocyte

Resistance to anti-leprosy drugs is on the rise. Several studies have documented resistance to rifampicin, dapsone, and ofloxacin in patients with leprosy. We looked for point mutations within the folP1, rpoB, and gyrA gene regions of the Mycobacterium leprae genome predominantly in the neural form of leprosy. DNA samples from 77 nerve tissue samples were polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified for M leprae DNA and sequenced for drug resistance-determining regions of genes rpoB, folP1, and gyrA. The mean age at presentation and onset was 38.2 ± 13.4 (range 14-71) years and 34.9 ± 12.6 years

CONTEXT: Lepra reactions if not managed promptly are an important cause of sudden onset nerve palsy and disability due to leprosy.
AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of histology in predicting type 1 lepra reaction.
SETTING AND DESIGN: After obtaining clearance from institutional research and ethics committees, all histologically proven borderline tuberculoid patients diagnosed at our center from 1.8.2016 to 31.7.2018 were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study.
METHOD: Clinical details were collected from patient records. The pathologist who was blinded to clinical evidence of t

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is an ancient, chronic granulomatous infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, principally affecting the skin and peripheral nerves. The clinical manifestations of leprosy are variable and can mimic a variety of other skin diseases. Thus, histopathological examination plays an important role in early diagnosis and management.
AIM: The aim was to study the clinicohistopathological correlation of all suspected cases of Hansen's disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 207 skin biopsies obtained from patients clinically diagnosed as new

INTRODUCTION: In metropolitan France, nearly 20 new cases of leprosy are diagnosed each year. The incidence of tuberculosis in France is 8/100,000 inhabitants and there are very few accounts of association of these two mycobacteria. Herein we report a case of co-infection with borderline tuberculoid (BT) leprosy and disseminated tuberculosis diagnosed in metropolitan France.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A male subject presented with diffuse painless infiltrated erythematous plaques. The biopsy revealed perisudoral and perineural lymphohistiocytic epithelioid cell granuloma as well as acid-alcohol-fa

Approximately 200 cases of leprosy are reported each year in the United States, and about 175 of the cases are diagnosed for the first time. Florida contributes a large number of reported cases each year and is showing an increasing incidence. Studies from other southern U.S. states demonstrate infection with the same strain of Mycobacterium leprae, confirming human armadillo exposure as the main risk factor. In contrast, cases from Florida show no clear risk factor. We present three cases (two foreign born and one autochthonous case) from Hillsborough county Florida, that were reported from t

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy affecting the nerve solely or with concomitant skin lesions is not an uncommon condition in clinical practice. It is responsible for extensive morbidity and often poses a diagnostic challenge. This study aims to highlight the clinicopathological features of Hansen's neuritis (HN).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, cases of histologically diagnosed HN, from January 2010 to July 2017, were reviewed in the light of clinical features, treatment history, and outcome.
RESULTS: There were 18 cases of HN which accounted for 3.97% of total nerve biopsy samples
