Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. FoxP3 have been shown to have important implications in various diseases. The present study describes the mechanism of action of FoxP3 in CD4⁺CD25⁺ T cells derived from leprosy patients. Increased molecular interactions of FoxP3 with histone deacetylases 7/9 in the nucleus of CD4⁺CD25⁺ T cells derived from borderline lepromatous leprosy/lepromatous leprosy (BL/LL) patients were found to be responsible for FoxP3-driven immune suppression activities during the progression of leprosy. Further, downregulation of CTLA-4 and CD2

Hepatitis C is an inflammatory disease of the liver caused by a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Hepacivirus genus in the Flaviviridae family, called the hepatitis C virus. After initial infection, 70% to 85% of the patients develop chronic hepatitis C with hepatic fibrosis. In addition to specific liver changes, various extrahepatic manifestations have been associated with the hepatitis C virus infection or with medications used to treat the condition. We report the case of a patient with chronic hepatitis C who presented with the signs and symptoms of borderline tuberculoid leprosy

A 65-year-old unemployed man, originally from Michoacán and currently living in Toluca, state of Mexico, presented for medical consultation for disseminated dermatosis in all body segments. The condition was limited to the head and neck, was bilateral and symmetrical, and was characterized by infiltrated and confluent erythematous-edematous plates of diverse diameter covering 90% of the upper and lower extremities (Figure 1). The ailment had 2 years' evolution and a progressive course. The patient was diagnosed in private practice as having atopic dermatitis. After exacerbation of symptoms, he

An example of trigeminal trophic syndrome presenting as ulceration of ala nasi in a case of borderline tuberculoid leprosy is reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the second case report of this manifestation in leprosy to be documented.

PURPOSE: Leprosy is rarely seen in Taiwan. We herein report a foreign worker concomitantly with facial borderline tuberculoid leprosy presenting with trigeminal neuralgia.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old male foreign labor from Indonesia, presented with 1 year history of a hypoanaesthetic erythematous plaque of right face and subsequent 6 months constant, severe pain in the right side of his face over the nasolabial groove. Biopsies and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of leprosy. We treated the patient with a multidrug regimen including dapsone, clofazimine, and rifampine sin

Silent transmission of Mycobacterium leprae, as evidenced by stable leprosy incidence rates in various countries, remains a health challenge despite the implementation of multidrug therapy worldwide. Therefore, the development of tools for the early diagnosis of M. leprae infection should be emphasised in leprosy research. As part of the continuing effort to identify antigens that have diagnostic potential, unique M. leprae peptides derived from predicted virulence-associated proteins (group IV.A) were identified using advanced genome pattern programs and bioinformatics. Based on human leukocy

Segmental necrotizing granulomatous neuritis (SNGN) is a rare condition affecting the nerves of Hansen disease patients. This is usually seen as a complication in association with the skin lesions of Hansen disease. Though very rare, it can also be the first presenting symptom of pure neuritic leprosy. We hereby report 2 cases of SNGN-one case of pure neuritic leprosy with initial presentation as SNGN and another, a treated case of borderline tuberculoid leprosy which relapsed with skin lesions and associated SNGN in the peripheral nerve.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease produced by Mycobacterium leprae. In 1997 Venezuela reached the goal of elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (according to the World Health Organization a prevalence rate of ≤ 1/10,000 inhabitants), but five states still had prevalence rates over that goal. For this study we selected Cojedes State, where prevalence rates remain over the elimination goal.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the real leprosy situation in high-prevalence areas of Cojedes State.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven communities of Cojedes State were selected because they h

BACKGROUND: although the foci of leprosy once present in Spain are now under control and almost inactive, isolated cases are still occasionally diagnosed. Meanwhile, population migration has brought about an increase in the incidence of cases corresponding to individuals from countries where leprosy is endemic, leading to changes in the epidemiology of this disease.
OBJECTIVES: the aim of this paper was to describe the clinical, epidemiologic, dermatologic, microbiologic, and therapeutic characteristics of cases of leprosy in our department in the last 5 years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: we repor

Stigma is almost synonymous with visible deformity and this is what makes leprosy a dreaded disease for the common man. Deformities in children are more distressing, due to the limitation of their physical, academic and social life. An 11-year-old female child was presented with trophic ulceration of right foot and triple nerve paralysis (i.e. total claw hand with wrist drop) of the left hand of 2 years duration. In addition, she had multiple hypopigmented hypoaesthetic patches on the extremities and buttocks. She was diagnosed as a case of borderline tuberculoid leprosy and was started on WHO

Leprosy is a chronic, infectious, systemic disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and is classified as paucibacillary and multibacillary types. It is contagious and has an insidious onset. Clinical presentation is characterised by hypopigmented skin lesions with reduced sensation. Presence of acid-fast bacilli in tissue specimens is regarded as a gold standard for diagnosis. Treatment is based on multi-drug regimens. We report a case of borderline tuberculoid leprosy in a 31-year-old woman.

Atypical presentations can be expected when leprosy, a mycobacterial disease is associated with HIV. We report a case of a 28 year old male driver with a high risk behavior, who came for evaluation of hypoaesthetic, scaly erythematous plaques over face, trunk, upper extremity; verrucous lesions over elbows and necrotic lesions over the neck and lower extremities since 6 months. No other systemic complaints were present. Nerve examination showed grossly thickened left greater auricular nerve and cord like thickening of bilateral ulnar and lateral popliteal nerves. His investigations revealed an

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy exhibits a wide spectrum of presentation, varying from the tuberculoid to the lepromatous pole, with immunologically unstable borderline forms in-between, depending upon the immune status of the individual. The clinical system of classification for the purpose of treatment includes the number of skin lesions and nerves involved as the basis for classifying the patients into multibacillary and paucibacillary.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man belonging to a moderately endemic leprosy area in the Terai region of Nepal reported a large single, hypopigmented, well defined

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the leprosy epidemiological trends and the diagnostic delay in newly detected cases between 1990 and 2004 in Wuhan.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical records of all 80 leprosy patients who were referred to the Wuhan Institute of Dermatology and Venerology (WHIDV) during 1990 and 2004, and the clinical information of diagnosis-delayed cases was analysed.
RESULTS: Patients were determined as lepromatous leprosy (LL, 24, 30%), borderline lepromatous leprosy (BL, 15, 18-75%), borderline leprosy (BB, 9, 11.25%), borderline tuberculoid leprosy (BT, 12, 15%), and tuberculoid l
