Retroperitoneal neuroblastoma widely metastatic to the central nervous system.

A girl with congenital extraadrenal neuroblastoma died at 3 months of age with multiple parenchymal metastases in the brain and spinal cord. The bones of the skull, cranial dura, venous sinuses, and orbits were not involved. Autopsy findings suggest that the tumor penetrated the spinal meninges and disseminated through the cerebrospinal fluid. It is possible that hematogenous metastasis occurred as well. The intracerebral metastases were not identified on a CT scan performed several hours before the child's death.

Subdural hygroma of the spinal meninges: a case report.

A case of a subdural hygroma or chronic subdural hematoma of the thoracolumbar spinal meninges is described. This became symptomatic 9 years after trauma. Terminological ambiguity is discussed, along with the detailed clinical, radiological, and operative presentations of this rare condition.

Naturally occurring neurologic disease in a fallow deer infected with meningeal worms.

Neurologic disease resulting from infection with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis was diagnosed in a fallow deer (Dama dama) from Georgia, with clinical signs and histopathologic lesions similar to those reported for other accidental hosts of P. tenuis. Early fifth stage parasites were found in the spinal meninges and immature parasites were found in the neural parenchyma, but none were recovered from the brain and cranial meninges.

Gliomas (astrocytomas) of the brain-stem with spinal intra- and extradural metastases: report of three cases.

Astrocytomas of the pons and medulla oblongata ('brain-stem gliomas') while often invasive locally, do not as a rule seed and metastasize along the spinal meninges. Three cases are here reported (two adults, one child) in whom astrocytoma of the brain-stem metastasized along the spinal cord. The dura mater itself and the spinal epidural space were invaded in two cases. The child and one adult had a pontine astrocytoma, the other adult's tumour originated in the medulla oblongata. In the two cases that came to necropsy the tumour of the brain-stem was much better differentiated than the meninge

Functional recovery from spinal cord trauma following delayed incision of spinal meninges in dogs.

The spinal cords of 16 normal dogs were exposed via dorsal laminectomies and damaged with a known force. In eight dogs the spinal cord meninges were incised longitudinally after a delay of 2 h. The other eight dogs were kept as controls and their meninges were not incised. The spinal cord function of all dogs was monitored for up to 32 days. The results show that delayed incision of the spinal meninges is of little benefit to dogs following experimental trauma to the spinal cord.

Meningeal haemorrhage and congestion associated with the perinatal mortality of beef calves.

Thirty Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn term calves dying before, during or within 7 days of birth in a large beef herd were autopsied. Selected specimens were examined histologically. Two carcasses were classified in the category of ante-parturient death, 24 as parturient, and 4 were classified in the post-parturient death category. Three of the latter showed evidence of starvation. Eight of the calves in the parturient death category were assisted during delivery, and 16 were not assisted. The incidence of nulliparous dams among assisted parturient deaths was significantly higher than among the

Allergic neuritis: an experimental disease of rabbits induced by the injection of peripheral nervous tissue and adjuvants.

In experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), produced by injecting rabbits with whole rabbit spinal cord together with tubercle bacilli and mineral oil, lesions comparable to those seen in the central nervous system are found in the nerve roots, spinal ganglia, and peripheral nerves. When special fractions of bovine white matter are used as antigen in rabbits, the same distribution of lesions is seen but peripheral nerve involvement is relatively less frequent. When rabbit sciatic nerve or spinal ganglia are used as antigen in rabbits, lesions occur only in the roots, ganglia, and periphe
