Adverse events associated with use of immunoglobulin in pediatric patients reported to the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System, 2001-2023.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin products are widely used for the treatment of immunodeficiency and autoimmune disorders. Although clinical trials have demonstrated their efficacy and tolerability, data describing their postmarketing safety profile in pediatric populations remain limited, particularly regarding rare and serious adverse events. This study aimed to characterize adverse event reports associated with immunoglobulin use in children during the postmarketing period. METHODS: Pediatric adverse event reports (<18 years) submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Report

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated pachymeningitis: a systematic review of clinical features, diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated pachymeningitis is a rare inflammatory disorder of the dura mater that may occur in isolation or as part of systemic vasculitis. The clinical features and outcomes of proteinase 3 (PR3)- and myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA-associated pachymeningitis remain poorly defined. We aimed to synthesize clinical presentation, investigations, and treatment outcomes to improve diagnosis and guide management. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched to June 15, 2023. Eligible studies we

Health Utilities Associated with Pneumococcal Diseases in Children and Adults: A Targeted Literature Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease and post-meningitis sequelae (PMS) impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, health utility estimates for these conditions vary considerably in the literature, which may affect the outcomes of economic evaluations. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to generate pooled estimates of quality-adjusted life year (QALY) decrements per episode for pneumococcal disease and pooled health state utility value (HSUV) estimates for PMS in children and adults. METHODS: Global targeted literature reviews were conducted in MEDLINE in June 2024 to identify original studies

Subnational analysis of pediatric sepsis incidence and mortality from official records in Chile and Mexico: a longitudinal study from 2014 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric sepsis is a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, yet high-resolution, granular subnational assessments remain scarce. Chile and Mexico are the only countries in Latin America that possess robust vital registration systems and open access databases with marginal levels of missing cases. This offers a unique opportunity to quantify the subnational burden of pediatric sepsis, identify healthcare system constrictions, and guide targeted public health interventions. METHODS: This retrospective longitudinal study analyzed official hospital discharge and non-fetal d

Long-term risk of dementia following encephalitis: a large-scale retrospective cohort study of electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain parenchyma, typically caused by microbial infections or autoimmune mechanisms, and represents a potentially life-threatening neurological condition affecting thousands of individuals each year in the United States. Although survivors may experience persistent neurological sequelae, long-term association of encephalitis and subsequent dementia and related diagnoses across different age groups and encephalitis etiologies remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to quantify the association between encephalitis and the risk of de

Overall survival following treatment of central nervous system meningeal melanocytomas: Insights from the national cancer database (NCDB).

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system (CNS) melanocytomas are rare, pigmented tumors derived from leptomeningeal melanocytes. Although generally benign, they can exhibit locally aggressive behavior and recur. Despite increasing recognition, data on their clinical outcomes and optimal management remain limited. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to evaluate the survival outcomes of patients with CNS melanocytomas, using a large national registry, and to explore the prognostic relevance of tumor location and treatment modalities. METHODS: We queried the National Cancer Database (NCDB) for case

Global Assessment of Health Utilities Associated with Pneumococcal Disease in Adults: Targeted Literature Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease can significantly reduce quality of life (QoL). Health utilities are commonly used to assess QoL burden and calculate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), which are critical inputs in cost-utility analyses (CUAs) to evaluate the economic value of pneumococcal vaccines. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to synthesize utility values used in CUAs of pneumococcal vaccines in adult populations in North America and Europe and to summarize global utility studies on pneumococcal disease and post-meningitis sequelae (PMS) in adults. METHODS: Two targeted literature reviews

The Burden of Hospital Illness Associated with Disseminated Versus Isolated Pulmonary Coccidioidomycosis in the United States.

There are scarce data comparing inpatient mortality, length of stay (LOS) and all-cause hospital costs in disseminated coccidioidomycosis (DCM) vs. isolated pulmonary coccidioidomycosis (IPCM). We assessed the burden of hospital illness associated with DCM versus IPCM. This study was performed using National Inpatient Sample data from 2019 to 2021. DCM was defined as having a primary International Classification of Diseases-Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code for coccidioidal meningitis, a non-primary code for coccidioidal meningitis in the presence of a primary code for a meningitis complication or

Neuronal Autoantibodies in Adults After Community-Acquired Bacterial Meningitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Long-term cognitive impairment is observed in 14%-32% of patients surviving community-acquired bacterial meningitis. We hypothesized that the impairment might be linked to secondary immune activation due to the development of neuronal autoantibodies, similar to postinfectious autoimmune encephalitis after viral encephalitis. METHODS: In this cross-sectional observational study, we included adult patients from a prospective, nationwide cohort study of community-acquired bacterial meningitis in the Netherlands, the MeninGene study. The presence of neuronal autoantibod

The Psychometric Performance of Generic Preference-Based Measures in Informal Carers: A Systematic Review of Validation Studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A growing number of health technology assessment agencies recommend inclusion of informal carer outcomes in health economic evaluations. While generic preference-based measures (GPBMs) are favoured, the evidence regarding their performance in measuring the health-related quality of life of informal carers has not been synthesised. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesise the psychometric evidence of GPBMs in informal carers. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a literature search (index

Molecular Genotyping of Circulating Enterovirus in the Lazio Region from 2012 to 2023.

Enteroviruses (EVs) are ubiquitous viruses that circulate worldwide, causing sporadic or epidemic infections, typically during the summer and fall. They cause a broad spectrum of illnesses, ranging from an unspecified febrile clinical presentation to a severe illness. EVs are recognized to be the most frequent etiological agents of aseptic meningitis in children. However, as the infection is usually mild and self-limiting, it remains underestimated, and the epidemiology of EVs is poorly understood. To date, no vaccine or effective therapy for all types of enteroviruses is available, and EVs co

Competing risks multi-state model for time-to-event data analysis of HIV/AIDS: a retrospective cohort national datasets, Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the most common opportunistic infection and leading cause of death among individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. Its significant impact on morbidity and mortality underscores the crucial link between these two diseases. While the advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has led to a dramatic decline in mortality rates among HIV/AIDS patients, TB continues to pose a substantial threat. This study aims to estimate the probability of death due to TB among HIV/AIDS patients on ART, considering the presence of various competing risks, including diarrhea,

An Overview of Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Nematoda: Angiostrongylidae), an Emerging Cause of Human Angiostrongylosis on the Indian Subcontinent.

Human angiostrongylosis is an emerging zoonosis caused by the larvae of three species of metastrongyloid nematodes of the genus Angiostrongylus, with Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Chen, 1935) being dominant across the world. Its obligatory heteroxenous life cycle includes rats as definitive hosts, mollusks as intermediate hosts, and amphibians and reptiles as paratenic hosts. In humans, the infection manifests as Angiostrongylus eosinophilic meningitis (AEM) or ocular form. Since there is no comprehensive study on the disease in the Indian subcontinent, our study aims at the growing incidence o

West Nile Virus and Other Nationally Notifiable Arboviral Diseases - United States, 2021.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted to humans primarily through the bites of infected mosquitoes or ticks, and in the continental United States, West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease. Other arboviruses cause sporadic cases of disease as well as occasional outbreaks. This report summarizes 2021 surveillance data reported to CDC by U.S. jurisdictions for nationally notifiable arboviruses; the report excludes chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and Zika virus disease cases, because these infections were acquired primarily through tr

A Case Report and Literature Review of New-Onset Myasthenia Gravis After COVID-19 Infection.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the neuromuscular junction caused by a B-cell-mediated, T-cell-dependent immunologic attack at the end plate of the postsynaptic membrane. Attack on muscle acetylcholine receptors (AChR) of the postsynaptic membrane due to the AChR, muscle-specific tyrosine kinase, or lipoprotein receptor-related peptide 4 antibodies lead to symptoms of painless, fluctuating weakness of muscle groups and often begins with ocular signs and symptoms. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory disease caused by severe acute respiratory sy
