Eyebrow Madarosis: An Updated Review of the Etiology and Management, Part II- Scarring Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Eyebrows play an essential role in facial symmetry, communication, and aesthetic identity. Scarring eyebrow alopecia results from inflammatory, autoimmune, infectious, genetic, traumatic, and iatrogenic processes that irreversibly damage follicular stem cells and limit regrowth potential. Despite its clinical and psychosocial impact, evidence-based guidance for diagnosis and management remains limited. METHODS: A comprehensive PubMed search (1960–2025) was performed using terms related to "eyebrow alopecia," "eyebrow madarosis," and etiology-specific conditions. English-lang

Socio-Demographic Factors and Deformity Among Patients With Leprosy in the Post-elimination Era: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Leprosy, an ancient disease described in the Sushruta Samhita, remains a public health concern in India, despite its elimination at the national level. It is caused by Mycobacterium leprae and primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves and may lead to disability and stigma if untreated. Early detection and timely multidrug therapy are essential for preventing complications and reducing its transmission. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Vidisha, Madh

Unusual sequential type I and II reactions in lepromatous leprosy: a case report.

Leprosy is a rare and easily misdiagnosed infectious disease in China. Leprosy reactions (LRs) are the greatest challenge in the treatment of leprosy. If LRs cannot be identified early and treated in a timely manner, patients are at risk of developing disabilities. Type I reactions often occur in borderline leprosy, whereas type II reactions are more prevalent in lepromatous leprosy. Clinically, lepromatous leprosy with type I and II mixed LRs is less common. This report details a case of lepromatous leprosy with mixed LRs, where the patient sequentially developed type II and then type I react

Long-term disability outcomes in Hansen's disease: A 20-year comparative study of Lepromatous vs. Tuberculoid Leprosy.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy remains an important cause of disability, even in non-endemic settings. Risk of neuropathy and functional impairment differs across the disease spectrum, yet contemporary U.S. data are limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare disability-related outcomes among patients with lepromatous versus tuberculoid leprosy in a large U.S. electronic health record (EHR) network. METHODS: Using the TriNetX U.S. Collaborative Research Network (2005-2025), patients with lepromatous (ICD-10-CM A30.4-A30.5) and tuberculoid (A30.1-A30.2) leprosy were identified. Disability-related outcomes were defin

A Six Year Old Boy with Lepromatous Leprosy: A Case Report Revealing an Unsolved Mystery.

Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous disease resulting from infection with the unculturable pathogen Mycobacterium leprae. Lepromatous leprosy is the most severe form, typically seen in adults with poor immune response to the bacillus. It is exceptionally rare in young children, specially under 10 years of age due to disease's long incubation period and lower exposure. Early presentation in a child raises question about atypical transmission and host susceptibility. We report a case of a six-year-old boy from Purbadhola, Netrokona, Bangladesh with a four-year history of progressive, asymptomatic

Serial high-resolution ultrasonography demonstrates dynamic inflammatory changes during multidrug therapy in leprosy neuropathy: a longitudinal case report.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, the leading infectious cause of nerve impairment-related disability. Peripheral neuropathy may occur before, during, or after diagnosis and treatment or as a result of leprosy reactions. High-resolution ultrasonography (HRUSG) provides a more precise evaluation of peripheral nerve abnormality in leprosy patients than clinical examination alone. Longitudinal data assessing dynamic alterations following multidrug treatment (MDT) using HRUSG are limited, especially in endemic settings. We report two leprosy p

Concurrent Multibacillary Lepromatous Leprosy with Autonomic Dysfunction and Cavitary Pulmonary Tuberculosis Complicated by Spontaneous Pneumothorax and Subcutaneous Emphysema.

The concurrent presentation of two distinct mycobacterial diseases - Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae - in a single patient is exceptionally rare. Lepromatous leprosy (LL), the multibacillary form of Hansen's disease, is characterized by profound defects in cell-mediated immunity, which may predispose individuals to other intracellular infections, including tuberculosis. We present a unique case of a patient with undiagnosed lepromatous leprosy presenting with ichthyosiform scaling and autonomic dysfunction who developed a life-threatening pulmonary complication from reactiv

A retrospective review of leprosy diagnosed histopathologically from skin biopsy specimens in central South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, remains a condition designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neglected tropical disease, despite formal eradication in South Africa. Histopathology is pivotal in the diagnosis of leprosy, particularly in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to describe the histopathological spectrum and clinical features of leprosy diagnosed on skin biopsies over a 10-year period in central South Africa. METHOD: A retrospective review was performed of histologically confirmed leprosy cases diagnosed from January 2015 to Dece

Using a Sequential Skills Training Model to Increase Oral-Motor Skills for Consuming Table-Textured Foods.

Background: Quantifying tumor-stroma architecture on routine hematoxylin and eosin slides may refine risk stratification in bladder cancer (BCa). We developed a convolutional neural network to segment whole-slide images, compute the mixed tumor-stroma ratio (MTSR), evaluate its prognostic value across multicenter cohorts, explore underlying molecular programs through multi-omics analysis, and construct a preoperative multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) radiomics model to estimate MTSR noninvasively. Methods: The ResNet50 convolutional network was customized using The Cancer Genome Atlas BCa slides lab

Protective effects of BCG vaccination against multibacillary disease, reactions, and disabilities in childhood leprosy: Insights from a retrospective observational study from a tertiary care center in India.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: While leprosy primarily affects adults, childhood leprosy poses unique challenges because of its potential to cause lifelong disabilities and stigma. This is a retrospective record review of all patients aged 15 or below, diagnosed with leprosy, who were registered at the leprosy clinic of our tertiary care center from June 2014 to December 2023. RESULTS: As per hospital records, 1083 leprosy cases were registered at our center during the study period. Of these, 50 (4.6%) were children below 15 years of age. Persistent skin lesions (PSL) were seen in 11 (22%) cases, an

Lucio phenomenon: a case report on an overlooked reaction in lepromatous leprosy.

Our patient presented with a 5-year history of chronic, asymptomatic papulonodular lesions on the extremities. Over the past 8 months, the lesions have spread to the face and earlobes, and new ulcerative lesions have appeared on both legs. Skin biopsy was compatible with lepromatous leprosy with Lucio phenomenon. Lucio phenomenon is a rare type of leprosy reaction found mostly in neglected lepromatous leprosy cases. Unfortunately, the patient developed pulmonary embolism and passed away. This case report focuses on the clinicopathological characteristics and management of Lucio phenomenon, whi

Study of Dermal Nerve Pathology in Upgrading and Downgrading Type 1 and Type 2 Leprosy Reactions.

Nerve destruction is central to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestation of leprosy reactions (LRs). However, pathological changes in dermal nerves in LRs have not been clearly elucidated. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining may fail to accurately identify fragmented nerves, and special stains may be required. We recruited 56 patients with clinically diagnosed LRs as cases and 30 patients with nonreactional leprosy as controls. Number and level of nerves, nerve edema, relation of granulomas to nerves, perineuritis, pattern of nerve involvement, and quantification of each nerve pattern were

GPNMB disrupts SNARE complex assembly to maintain bacterial proliferation within macrophages.

Xenophagy plays a crucial role in restraining the growth of intracellular bacteria in macrophages. However, the machinery governing autophagosome‒lysosome fusion during bacterial infection remains incompletely understood. Here, we utilize leprosy, an ideal model for exploring the interactions between host defense mechanisms and bacterial infection. We highlight the glycoprotein nonmetastatic melanoma protein B (GPNMB), which is highly expressed in macrophages from lepromatous leprosy (L-Lep) patients and interferes with xenophagy during bacterial infection. Upon infection, GPNMB interacts with

Double positive IL-17A+IFN-γ+CCR6+ ILCs contribute towards the immunopathology of lepromatous leprosy.

Leprosy is a skin disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, characterized by both localized and generalized immune responses. Th1/17 lymphocytes play a crucial role in the immune response against M. leprae. However, adaptive immunity alone is not sufficient to completely eradicate the pathogen, suggesting the involvement of other innate immune cells in pathogen removal. Therefore, we investigated innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), which are the innate counterparts of helper T cells in adaptive immunity and are known to produce IFN-γ and IL-17. In the present study, we evaluated the expression of ILC1
