OBJECTIVE: Mesenrhombencephalitis is a serious form of brainstem inflammation predominantly involving the deep and vital portions of the brain, that is, the mesencephalon (midbrain) and rhombencephalon (pons, medulla). Mesenrhombencephalitis is difficult to diagnose on the basis of clinical and laboratory findings alone, and access to this portion of the brain for surgical biopsy carries high morbidity. We describe the MR appearance of mesenrhombencephalitis and correlate the imaging findings with clinical information.

Epidemiological studies have shown a consistent downward trend in the incidence and mortality of stroke in industrialized communities. We report our observations in 427 stroke patients (305 Saudis, 122 non-Saudis with an age range of 14 months to 85 years) seen in a tertiary hospital in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia over an 8-year period. Of these patients, 115 (27%) were between 18 and 45 years old, and constituted the "young stroke patients" for this study. The hospital frequency for the young was 5/10,000 inpatients. An increase in the awareness of the problem of gunshot fatalities in children has occurred nationwide over the last year. Unintentional firearm deaths are more common among children and young adults. These deaths may be addressed by preventive measures beyond those available for pediatric firearm suicide and homicide. This study focuses on the incidence of fatal gunshot injuries in children under 16 years of age during the years 1979 through 1987 in our state. In superovulated women the pituitary response to GnRH is markedly attenuated by an unspecified ovarian factor(s). To examine the site of attenuation, the response of the pituitary to GnRH was investigated in five normally ovulating women during the late follicular phase of 3 cycles, i.e. a spontaneous (control) cycle, a cycle treated with 'pure' FSH, and a cycle treated with a combination of 'pure' FSH and pulsatile GnRH, via a pump (15 micrograms/pulse). The oestradiol levels (mean +/- SEM) at the time of the GnRH challenge were respectively 646 +/- 35, 1692 +/- 282 and 5976 +/- 1129 pmol/l.

This study assessed potential teratogenic properties of benzodiazepine (BZD) intake during early pregnancy. Four neonatal diagnoses of congenital malformations (embryopathy and fetopathy, unspecified; unspecified congenital malformations of the nervous system; cleft palate and cleft lip; congenital malformations of the urinary tract) were selected.
