The poultry sector is a significant reservoir of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria, posing a substantial threat to public health and food safety. This study quantified farm-level contamination in chickens and turkeys, characterized Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. and their ESBL/carbapenemase encoding genes, and evaluated papain as a meat-preservation agent. A total of 442 samples (cloacal swabs, litter, water, feed, worker hands, meat, and organs) were collected from 12 chicken and 8 turkey farms. The total viable count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC) were enumerated. E. coli and S

BACKGROUND: Salmonella is an important zoonotic pathogen that is widely distributed in every link between livestock and poultry production. Salmonella contamination not only affects the healthy development of the livestock industry but also poses a serious threat to public health, as it can infect humans through farming, processing, and consumption of meat and egg products. Therefore, establishing detection methods capable of simultaneously identifying different Salmonella serotypes is crucial.
RESULTS: This study focused on using Salmonella flagellin as an immunogen to screen and prepare mon

Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:- has emerged as a leading cause of non-typhoidal salmonellosis globally, yet the mechanisms governing its intracellular survival and pathogenic adaptation remain unclear. Herein, through transposon-insertion sequencing, we identify nlpD, a peptidoglycan hydrolase activator essential for maintaining membrane stability and facilitating bacterial division, as a critical gene for Salmonella infection. nlpD-deficient Salmonella exhibits significantly diminished survival in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Mechanistically, nlpD deletion disrupts peptidoglycan and lipopolysa

Trabeculectomy remains the 'gold standard' intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering procedure for moderate-to-severe glaucoma; however, this approach is associated with the need for substantial post-operative management. Micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures aim to reduce the need for intra- and post-operative management and provide a less invasive means of lowering IOP. Generally, MIGS procedures are associated with only modest reductions in IOP and are targeted at patients with mild-to-moderate glaucoma, highlighting an unmet need for a less invasive treatment of advanced and refracto

BACKGROUND: A substantial increase in the prevalence of eating disorders has been noticed over the past decades. Priority in the treatment of eating disorders is justifiably given to psychosocial interventions. However, it is also well known that centrally acting drugs can significantly affect appetite and food consumption.
AIM: To narratively review the available neurobiological data on the mechanisms of central regulation of eating behavior as a rationale to summarize pharmacological strategies for appetite modulation in eating disorders.
METHODS: The authors have carried out a narrative r

Following the publication of the above article, a concerned reader drew to the authors' attention that, regarding the images of the mouse embryo fibroblast (MEF) cells with senescence‑associated β‑galactosidase (SA‑β‑gal) staining shown in Fig. 1B on p. 3254, the panels on the far left and the far right on the bottom row of data [showing treatments with 0 µM and 40 µM adjudin respectively in the presence of hydroxyurea (HU)] contained an overlapping section of data (albeit after turning the right‑hand panel through 90°), such that data which were intended to show the results from differently p

Prolymphocytic leukemia (PLL) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by marked leukocytosis and splenomegaly. PLL accounts for approximately 2% of chronic lymphoid leukemias. The clinical course is progressive in the majority of cases due to the resistance of the disease to conventional chemotherapy. The disease is divided according to the cell of origin into the B- (B-PLL) and T-cell (T-PLL) types. T-PLL and B-PLL are morphologically identical, but lymphadenopathy and skin involvement are more common in T-PLL than in B-PLL. Approximately 80% of cases are of B-cell phenotype. T-P

BACKGROUND: Patients with eating disorders (ED) often suffer from compulsive exercise behavior, which is associated with lower short-term response to treatment and poorer long-term outcome. Evidence-based interventions specifically targeting compulsive exercise behavior have been scarce so far. We developed a manualized group therapeutic approach integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy, exercise therapy and exposure with response management to promote healthy exercise behavior. Our objective was to examine the feasibility and acceptance of this new approach as add-on to regular inpatient trea

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Pediatric constipation, attributed to the functional immaturity of the gastrointestinal tract in children, is a common clinical disorder characterized by impaired gastrointestinal motility and infrequent bowel movements. Existing therapeutic strategies are frequently constrained by suboptimal efficacy owing to their single-target mechanisms and systemic toxicity. In contrast, Chinese medicinal formulas, with their multicomponent and multitarget intervention strategies, offer a highly suitable alternative for managing constipation. The traditional Chinese medicine formula "YiNianJin" (YNJ) is c

The pituitary neuroendocrine tumour (PitNET) immune microenvironment (IME) has become a recent focus of research interest. Multiplex immunofluorescence combined with digital image analysis is a powerful technique to interrogate the IME. Processes such as DNA damage response and cellular senescence have been implicated in somatotroph tumour pathogenesis, and these have in turn been linked with immunological responses to neoplasia. The objectives of this study were to compare the immune cell infiltrate in PitNETs to normal pituitary, investigate how the PitNET-IME may vary according to treatment

Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) of infectious origin represents a small percentage of all cases of cholecystitis. According to the literature, the most common pathogens include Salmonella typhii and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). However, AAC has also been described as a rare complication in the context of other viral hepatitis infections, with only a few reported cases attributed to hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection. We present the case of a patient with AAC secondary to HAV infection, which resolved favorably with conservative management. We report the case of a 29-year-old male presenting w

Salmonella Infantis has recently been one of the most prevalent serotypes in poultry and has been identified in human salmonellosis cases worldwide. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella Infantis has emerged as a significant threat to both poultry production and public health due to its increasing prevalence and global dissemination. We identified the occurrence of an MDR Salmonella Infantis clone in broiler flocks in Korea, and the clone was characterized to explore potential genetic causes for its high prevalence and rapid spread in broiler production. In total, 220 Salmonella strains isolate

INTRODUCTION: Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella typhi and Paratyphi, remains a significant public health concern, particularly in developing countries. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance, including resistance to first-line drugs, fluoroquinolones, and the development of resistance to ceftriaxone, poses a significant threat to effective treatment.
METHODS: This study investigated extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella typhi isolates from blood samples of patients with suspected typhoid fever at a tertiary care hospital in Western Rajasthan, India, between April 2022

Antibiotics are crucial for controlling severe or invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections. However, the high resistance or toxicity of traditionally first-line antibiotics calls for alternatives. The excellent membrane permeability, long half-life and safe to use in children render azithromycin a promising candidate. However, azithromycin resistance has been observed in NTS isolates recovered from humans, food, animals and the environment, with particularly high rates in Asia. Although azithromycin resistance remains low in Europe, the USA and Australia, an increasing tendency has b

In this work, we present the genomic characterization of a clinical Salmonella enterica serovar Rissen isolate harboring a novel IncN2 plasmid carrying the blaKPC-2 gene. The identified plasmid (pSEay-KPC) also encoded additional resistance genes, including blaACC-1, blaTEM-1, and qnrB. The pSEay-KPC conferred broad-spectrum antimicrobial resistance, allowing the pathogen to survive two consecutive antibiotic therapies with ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin. Effective treatment was ultimately achieved with meropenem-vaborbactam, a last-resort agent. These findings highlight IncN2 plasmids as poten

Salmonella is known to cause intestinal infections in humans, which can result in symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and, in severe cases, sepsis and death. Isolates of Salmonella from specific populations and regions exhibit varying patterns of antibiotic resistance and genetic characteristics. This study aims to evaluate the diversity of 32 strains of Salmonella isolated from fecal samples of diarrhea patients in Chifeng City, China, between 2021 and 2023, through antibiotic resistance and genomic analysis. Microbroth dilution and whole genome sequencing were employed to investigate antibi

Helper T cells (CD4 T cells) are lynchpins of adaptive immune responses. Each CD4 T cell expresses a single T-cell receptor, recognizing an epitope presented by major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II). Due to the enormous diversity of the T-cell repertoire, it is often desirable to study a population that responds to the same epitope. Here, we devised a novel method of selective immunization to produce a robust, monospecific helper T-cell response in mice using a modular mRNA vector. The vector encodes the target epitope attached via flexible linker to MHC-II. Immunization with this
