Craniopharyngioma in the temporal lobe: a case report.

Herein, we report on an unusual case of craniopharyngioma arising in the temporal lobe with no prior history of surgery and with no connection to the craniopharyngeal duct. MR images showed a cystic tumor with a small solid portion. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a craniopharyngioma occurring in the temporal lobe.

[Ectopic pituitary adenoma. Case report and review of literature].

Ectopic pituitary adenomas are very rare neoplasms. They are usually located in the sphenoid sinus or nasopharynx. Ectopic tumors derive from a residual pituitary fragment in the craniopharyngeal duct. They are similar in morphology, immunohistochemistry and hormonal activity to the typical pituitary adenoma. One third ectopic pituitary tumors reported in the literature are endocrine inactive, while the remaining ones indicate a hormonal activity and usually secrete ACTH, causing the Cushing disease. About 50% of pituitary adenomas are located at the skull base and present as aggressive neopla

Rathke's cleft cyst presenting as sphenoid sinusitis.

Rathke's cleft cysts are developmental abnormalities of the craniopharyngeal duct composed of retained stratified ciliated cuboidal cells of the respiratory type. Incidentally found in the pars intermedia in 13% to 33% of routine autopsies, they are discovered in growing numbers on CT and MRI scans. From 1991 to 1999, 9 cases of Rathke's cleft cysts were encountered by the senior authors, 4 of which were treated surgically (3 by using a transsphenoidal approach and one by using a transcranial subfrontal approach). Of the 3 patients treated with a transsphenoidal approach, 2 presented with symp

Craniopharyngioma involving supfrasellar region and sphenoid sinus: case report.

Craniopharyngiomas are benign, epithelial, slow-growing neoplasms that generally develop either in the suprasellar region or in both the suprasellar and intrasellar regions. They rarely occurs in the infrasellar region. Based on embryologic development of adenohypophysis, the tumor can arise along the path of the craniopharyngeal duct. We report on an 8- year-old boy who presented to us with headache and anorexia for several weeks during May 1999. Brain MRI revealed a huge sphenoid tumor. The tumor was completely excised by functional endoscopic sinus surgery on 12th August 1999. The postopera

Recurrent bacterial meningitis.

UNLABELLED: To characterize recurrent bacterial meningitis in children, we reviewed the charts of all patients treated for more than one episode of bacterial meningitis at the Würzburg University Children's Hospital from 1980 to June 1995. Twenty-five children suffered 2-13 episodes of bacterial meningitis. Most patients were referred from other hospitals to our paediatric neurosurgical service. No immunodeficiency was found. In all patients, the cause of recurrent meningitis was an anatomical lesion with 13 intracranial defects including encephaloceles, skull fractures, Mondini dysplasias, ne

Pharyngeal hypophysis.

Derived from embryologic remnants of Rathke's pouch and its craniopharyngeal duct, the pharyngeal hypophysis has long been considered to be present in all humans. This thesis has been recently challenged, but the weight of investigative evidence still favors the original premise. The pharyngeal hypophysis is just one product of Rathke's pouch. Others are extracranial pituitary tumors, the very rare craniopharyngioma, pharyngeal hypopharyngeal cysts, and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea.

Aberrant craniopharyngeal structures within the neurohypophysis of rats.

Aberrant craniopharyngeal structures within the neurohypophysis were analyzed in 17 rats, originating from four different colonies of Sprague-Dawley- and Wistar-derived strains, which were used for toxicity studies in five different laboratories. Males were more frequently affected than females. The incidence of these findings, which occurred spontaneously and mainly in aged rats, was very low. Predominant features included tubular or acinar glandular structures, rarely embedded in a fibrous stroma, and, as a rule, not compressing adjacent tissue. In some cases, large cysts filled with colloid

Cyst formation of the craniopharyngeal duct.

The craniopharyngeal duct is the route by which the adenohypophysis ascends from the pharynx to the pituitary fossa. Rathke's cleft cyst represents an expansion of primitive vesicles that lie between the pars intermedia and the pars anterior. These cysts are rare but have been detected more frequently with the more widespread use of CT and MRI. Three cases are described which illustrate the variety of positions that a cystic lesion of the craniopharyngeal duct can occupy. These cases provide a basis for the discussion of the embryological formation of the pituitary, cyst formation of the duct,

[Sphenoido-nasopharyngeal craniopharyngioma. A case with radical excision by Le Fort I-type maxillotomy].

A case of infra-sellar (sphenoidal nasopharyngeal) craniopharyngioma is reported. A 16 year-old girl presented with progressive nasal obstruction. CT and MR images showed a heterogeneous tumor originating from the sphenoid bone with no intra-cranial or supra-sellar extension. On a biopsy specimen, the histologic examination was consistent with a craniopharyngioma. The tumor was successfully removed via an inferior route using a Le Fort I maxillotomy. Plates and screws were used to achieve osteosynthesis. The post-operative course was uneventful and there was no residual tumor on post-operative

Nasopharyngeal craniopharyngioma. Case report and literature review.

Craniopharyngioma is an intracranial tumor that occurs rarely in the infrasellar region. Eight patients with craniopharyngioma located within the nasopharynx have been reported previously. These cases originated in the nasopharynx and involved the sella turcica (6), the sphenoid sinus (1), and the vomer (1). Craniopharyngioma usually originates intracranially. When there is no evidence of sellar involvement, the tumor most likely arises along the path of the craniopharyngeal duct. According to the neurosurgical literature, the optimal treatment consists of total surgical excision. Incomplete t

Model of electrocardiographic changes seen with subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbits.

We developed a new method for introducing drugs into the basal cistern of rabbits. With minimal surgical invasion, we used either the opening of the craniopharyngeal duct to access the chiasmatic cistern or the suture between the basisphenoid and basioccipital bones to access the interpeduncular cistern. With our method, 0.5 ml contrast medium injected into three rabbits was determined roentgenographically to remain in the basal cistern; histologically, all the brain tissue remained intact. Intracisternal injection of 0.5 ml physiological saline into five rabbits had no effect on the cardiovas

Osteolipomas of the tuber cinereum.

Osteolipomas of the tuber cinereum traditionally have been classified as meningeal lipomas that are located at the tuber cinereum. Examination of two cases and a review of 22 others found in the literature show that these lesions exhibit a remarkable consistency in their size and in their location between the corpora mamillaria and the pituitary stalk, and that approximately half of them contain a well-organized bone spherule with a central marrow space. These aspects differ from the features of meningeal lipomas in general; reasons are given for considering that the osteolipomas are displaced

Tumours of the nervous system.

Tumours of the nervous system of animals are not as rare as has been commonly believed. In dogs, especially the brachycephalic breeds, these tumours occur as frequently as in man. The tumours are grouped according to tissue of origin as follows: nerve cells, neuroepithelium, glia, peripheral nerves and nerve sheaths, meninges and vessels, the pineal and pituitary glands, and the craniopharyngeal duct. Tumours of the glia are relatively common and are divided into the following types: astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, glioblastoma, spongioblastoma, medulloblastoma, and unclassified gliomas.
