Increased numbers of bone marrow mast cells were found in 45 (2.2%) of 2,000 bone marrow specimens obtained from patients who had hematologic disorders. Mast cells were most frequently seen in the marrows of patients who had preleukemic syndromes, lymphoproliferative disorders, and acute leukemia. The 16 patients who had preleukemic syndromes included those with refractory sideroblastic and megaloblastic anemia (with or without an excess of blasts), idiopathic pancytopenia or pure erythrocytic aplasia, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, idiopathic refractory neutropenia, agranulocytosis or t

Clinical and cytogenetic studies were done on 8 patients with dysmyelopoietic syndrome: 6 of these patients had refractory anemia with an excess of blasts (RAEB), and 2 patients had chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) according to the French-American-British classification. The ages of these 8 patients (3 female and 5 male) ranged from 45 to 70 yr (median, 61.5 yr). Seven of the 8 patients died 3-86 mo (median, 11 mo) after the onset of symptoms of hemorrhage or infections. Cytogenetic studies of bone marrow cells with the Q-banding technique showed clonal karyotypic abnormalities in 7 of t

The clinical and laboratory features of 37 patients with variants of acute monocytic leukemia are described. Three of these 37 patients who had extensive extramedullary leukemic tissue infiltration are examples of true histiocytic "lymphomas." Three additional patients with undifferentiated leukemias, one patient with refractory anemia with excess of blasts, one patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, one patient with B-lymphocyte diffuse "histiocytic" lymphoma and one patient with "null" cell, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-positive lymphoblastic lymphoma had bone marrow cells wi

The syndrome of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria is a stem cell disorder characterized by the production of abnormal cells in all three lines of the peripheral blood. These cells react abnormally with the activated components of complement, resulting in the clinical symptoms. The clone of stem cells characteristic of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria may arise spontaneously without demonstrable abnormalities of the other stem cells of the bone marrow. On the other hand, the abnormal stem cells of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria may arise as part of a prior stem cell disorder. This

The classification of acute leukemia has almost invariably been based on the morphologic diagnosis into two broad categories: acute lymphocytic and acute myeloid leukemia. Despite the wide range of morphologic variation in both groups, strict criteria to define the subgroups have only recently been proposed. The conventional markers for B and T cells are now being applied to leukemic cells as are cytochemistry and electron microscopy, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase, serum lysozyme, and surface markers, E-rosettes, membrane immunoglobulin, antinull acute lymphocytic leukemia antiserum, a
