Comparative evaluation of conventional radiomics and VGG-SAM fusion strategies for MRI-based preoperative prediction of perineural invasion in cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Perineural invasion (PNI) is an adverse feature in cervical cancer and may influence nerve-sparing surgery. We compared conventional radiomics and VGG-SAM deep-learning strategies for MRI-based preoperative prediction of PNI. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 103 patients with cervical cancer, including 82 PNI-negative and 21 PNI-positive patients, was analyzed. PyRadiomics features were extracted from raw DICOM MRI and paired tumor masks. Four deep variants were evaluated: VGG only, SAM only, VGG + SAM naive fusion, and VGG + SAM learnable fusion. Patient-level stratified five-fo

Element-specific global burden of cancers attributable to occupational metals (As, Be, Cd, Cr, Ni), 1990-2021: trends, SDI-linked inequalities, and explainable forecasting to 2030.

BACKGROUND: Although several occupational metals are established or probable carcinogens, their attributable cancer burdens have rarely been compared within a unified global framework. Existing evidence is often restricted to single metals, selected cancer sites, or individual countries, leaving uncertainty about how arsenic, cadmium, chromium, nickel, and beryllium differ in long-term trajectories and Socio-demographic Index (SDI)-linked inequalities. OBJECTIVE: We quantified the cancer burden attributable to five occupational metal exposures across global, regional, and national settings fr

Tumor budding as a predictive factor of lymph node metastases and survival in endometrial cancer patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tumor budding (TB), defined as isolated single cells or small clusters at the invasive front, has emerged as an adverse prognostic marker in several solid tumors. Its prognostic value in endometrial carcinoma (EC), however, remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration: CRD420251066731) of studies evaluating the association between TB and survival outcomes and lymph node positivity in EC. Comprehensive searches of CENTRAL, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar identified eligible observational studies. RESULTS: Ten stu

Advances in the management of pediatric low-grade glioma.

Pediatric low-grade gliomas (pLGGs), the most common CNS tumors in children, are increasingly recognized as chronic diseases with prolonged courses and cumulative morbidity. Long-term survival is excellent. Management depends on tumor location and often requires repeated therapy, with risk of long-term functional and neurocognitive impairment. This review synthesizes recent advances in pLGG management, integrating molecular classification, systemic therapies, and emerging diagnostic and surveillance technologies. Treatment advances have been driven by improved molecular characterization, parti

[The dysplastic nevus].

Dysplastic nevus is a controversial category of melanocytic nevi. Formerly regarded as "formal histogenetic precursors of melanoma" or intermediate lesions in the progression of "common acquired nevi" to melanoma, dysplastic nevi are now considered to be benign melanocytic nevi that may simulate melanoma histopathologically. The dysplastic nevus is a very common type of melanocytic nevus. It is limited to the epidermis and papillary dermis, with the epidermal component extending beyond the dermal one; composed mostly of melanocytes with small, monomorphous nuclei; and also known as Clark's nev

Occult Neoplasms in Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy: A Scoping Review of Post-Mortem Findings.

Background: Sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) may occasionally be attributable to neoplasms that were clinically unrecognised before the terminal event and diagnosed or confirmed during post-mortem investigation. These occult neoplasms are exceptionally rare and remain poorly characterised. This scoping review identifies published reports of neoplasms not diagnosed or strongly suspected before the terminal event in infants who died suddenly and unexpectedly, and systematically collects data on pathological features, diagnostic modalities, mechanisms of death, and the extent to which th

Interplay Between Epigenetics and Reactive Oxygen Species in Tumor Radioresistance: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Strategies for Radiotherapy.

Radiotherapy efficacy is constrained by tumor radioresistance, which arises in part from the interplay between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and epigenetic regulation. This review systematically synthesizes the bidirectional "epigenetics-ROS interactive network" that governs tumor radiosensitivity. We propose that this network operates through three core principles: stress adaptation (acute ROS triggers transient epigenetic adjustments for redox recovery), malignant reinforcement (chronic ROS drives stable epigenetic reprogramming toward therapy resistance), and contextual determinacy (cellula

Gastric Glomus Tumor Mimicking a Neuroendocrine Tumor: A Case Report Highlighting Diagnostic Pitfalls.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric glomus tumors (GGTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms arising from the modified smooth muscle cells of the glomus body. Their subepithelial location and pronounced hypervascularity overlap considerably with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) on imaging and in small biopsy specimens, making an accurate preoperative diagnosis challenging; as a result, such lesions are frequently diagnosed after surgical resection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old asymptomatic woman was found to have a 25-mm well-circumscribed, hypervascular submucosal le

Provider Knowledge and Utilization of Anal Cancer Screening: A Single Institution Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

In 2024, the International Anal Neoplasia Society (IANS) published the first consensus guidelines for anal cancer screening, outlining recommendations for patients who are most impacted by anal cancer. This study assesses provider knowledge and practice of these guidelines. A 37-item cross-sectional survey was distributed electronically to physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants across ten specialties within a single health system. The survey assessed familiarity with anal cytology, guideline knowledge, screening practices, and barriers to screening. Descriptive statistics an

Bridging gaps in breast cancer clinical trial enrollment: insights from a community-based research registry initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer research registries are critical for ensuring representative participation in clinical trials. However, registries based primarily in hospitals may under-enroll women and other populations who experience structural, logistical, cultural, and informational barriers to care and research participation. Community-based organizations (CBOs) may help address this gap by developing registries that engage diverse populations of women at increased risk for and surviving with breast cancer more directly. The purpose of this study was to examine demographic, clinical, and organizational

Microbeam radiotherapy - clinical and dosimetric investigation of a first clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Microbeam Radiotherapy (MRT) is an emerging radiotherapy technique which delivers spatially fractionated beams on a micrometre scale. In preclinical studies MRT has demonstrated superior normal tissue sparing compared to conventional radiotherapy while maintaining tumour control. However, MRT has traditionally been achievable only at large synchrotron facilities which has impeded clinical translation. The development of a compact line-focus X-ray tube (LFXT) provides a pathway for clinical MRT, but identification of clinically and dosimetrically suitable patient scenarios is requir

Modeling and parameter estimation of tumor spheroids from bottom-view imaging: beyond the spherical assumption.

Tumor spheroids are widely used in vitro models for studying tumor growth and treatment response, yet their analysis is often limited by incomplete geometric measurements. In practice, only a two-dimensional bottom view is available, which can lead to strong biases when spheroids deviate from an ideal spherical shape, in particular for flattened aggregates. We propose a mechanistic modeling and data assimilation framework that accounts for both poor data quality and model uncertainty. A biologically motivated partial differential equations model with axial symmetry is introduced and reduced to

Regional divergence in female cancer mortality in Brazil signals the unequal pace of the cancer transition.

BACKGROUND: The cancer transition framework describes the shift from infection-related cancers, such as cervical cancer, to cancers more commonly observed in high human development settings, such as breast cancer, as societies develop. Brazil, with marked regional disparities in health and socioeconomic indicators, offers a unique context to analyze how this transition unfolds unevenly across subnational regions. This study aimed to describe and compare levels and temporal trends in age-standardized mortality rates for breast and cervical cancer across Brazilian macroregions from 1980 to 2021,
