Global trends in young and older adult esophageal cancer burden from 1990 to 2021: An observational analysis for the Global Burden of Disease study 2021.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and analyzing its most recent disease trends is essential for effective prevention and control strategies. Data on the global burden of EC were obtained from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease study, including prevalence, incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and attributable risk factors. Age-standardized rates were calculated for each indicator, and estimated annual percentage change was used to assess temporal trends in ASRs from 1990 to 2021. Analyses were stratified by age group

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the psoas muscle presenting as a retroperitoneal mass: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of intermediate biological potential characterized by myofibroblastic spindle-cell proliferation and a variable inflammatory infiltrate. Although IMT may arise in a wide range of anatomical locations, primary involvement of the psoas muscle is exceptionally uncommon and may present significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical and radiological features. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old man presented with progressive left flank and left iliac fossa pain radiating to the back and left lower

Molecular Profiling in Mucinous Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasms: Implications for Surgical Decision-Making - A Narrative Review.

Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) represent a heterogeneous group ranging from benign cysts to lesions with malignant potential. Despite advances in imaging and endoscopic evaluation, determining which lesions warrant surgical resection remains a major challenge in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. Overtreatment exposes patients to substantial operative morbidity, whereas delayed intervention may permit progression to invasive cancer. Cyst-fluid molecular profiling can improve the classification of mucinous cysts and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms and may reduce diagnostic uncerta

Global burden of lip and oral cavity cancer attributable to behavioral risk factors, 1990-2021: a systematic analysis based on the GBD 2021 database.

BACKGROUND: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) is a major global public health issue, with tobacco and alcohol as key modifiable behavioral risk factors. This study analyzed global LOC burden trends (1990-2021) and predicted future burden through 2051. METHODS: Data were from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021, including behavioral factor-attributable age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (ASDR) and mortality rate (ASMR). Joinpoint regression identified trend changes; Age-Period-Cohort (APC) models assessed age, period, and cohort effects. Health inequalities were evalu

Bayesian optimization of deterministic lateral displacement devices for circulating tumor cell separation.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), shed from primary tumors into the peripheral bloodstream, are important biomarkers for early cancer diagnosis and disease monitoring. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) microfluidic devices enable label-free CTC isolation through continuous, size-based separation. However, DLD performance is highly sensitive to coupled geometric and operating parameters, making optimal design challenging. Conventional trial-and-error approaches are computationally expensive and provide limited insight into parameter interactions, necessitating data-driven optimization. Her

Beyond feasibility: an oncology-first framework for defining the role of robot-assisted surgery in ovarian cancer-patient selection, surgical adequacy, and conversion pathways.

Robot-assisted surgery has expanded in gynecologic oncology, but its role in ovarian cancer remains uncertain because oncologic success depends on completion of the required cancer operation rather than on the access route. This critical narrative review evaluates selective use of a robotic approach in apparent early-stage disease, interval cytoreduction after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, exceptional primary cytoreduction, and selected platinum-sensitive recurrence in candidates for secondary cytoreduction. Robotics-specific evidence is distinguished from conventional laparoscopic and mixed minim

Isolated left-lobe metastatic hepatic abscess due to portal pyemia from microperforated ascending colon carcinoma: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Liver abscess-like lesions are commonly managed as primary hepatobiliary infections; however, colorectal cancer can be an occult source, particularly when portal pyemia follows a microperforated tumor. Diagnostic complexity increases when right-sided colon cancer presents with an apparently isolated left-lobe hepatic collection mimicking foregut disease, especially in settings where anaerobic culture and immunohistochemistry are limited. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged woman in her fifth decade with an 8-month history of intermittent right iliac fossa pain and re

Drug Delivery Systems for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Bridging Pathophysiological Barriers and Advanced Nanomedicine Strategies.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by high heterogeneity, a complex tumor microenvironment, and multiple physiological barriers that limit conventional therapies and cause significant toxicity. Drug delivery systems (DDS), particularly nanoscale delivery systems, offer promising opportunities to overcome these obstacles through passive targeting, active targeting, and stimuli-responsive drug release. Nevertheless, despite substantial progress in preclinical research, the clinical translation of most DDS remains challenging. This review systematically outlines the pathophysiologica

Primary Renal Glomus Tumor of Uncertain Malignant Potential: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Renal glomus tumor (GT) is a rare neoplasm originating from glomus cells within the kidney. The subtype designated as uncertain malignant potential (UMP) is particularly rare, with limited literature available. Its clinical presentation and imaging features closely resemble those of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), making accurate preoperative diagnosis difficult. This case report aims to describe the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of a renal GT of UMP and to summarize previously reported cases to improve recognition of this rare entity. We report a case involving a 36-year-old m

Current state of evidence for RATS lobectomy for NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) has progressively been integrated into minimally invasive strategies for pulmonary lobectomy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Although video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) remains the most established minimally invasive approach, the clinical relevance and added value of robotic platforms continue to be debated. METHODS: This narrative review critically examines the existing literature on robot-assisted lobectomy for NSCLC. Emphasis is placed on comparative data evaluating oncological outcomes, lymph node assessment, per

Recurrent vulvar tumor consistent with myxoid dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in a resource-limited setting: A case report from Somalia.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon, locally aggressive soft tissue tumor, and its occurrence in the vulva is exceptionally rare. We describe the case of a 35-year-old woman who presented with a recurrent vulvar mass one year after excision of a lesion previously diagnosed as aggressive angiomyxoma. Histopathological examination of the recurrent lesion demonstrated spindle cell proliferation within a myxoid stroma, focal storiform architecture, and honeycomb infiltration of the subcutaneous adipose tissue, findings that were morphologically consistent with myxoid dermatofibro

Beyond gastric acid: pharmacologic modulation of the tumor microenvironment by vonoprazan and its drug-interaction implications for chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

PURPOSE: Vonoprazan, a potassium-competitive acid blocker, possesses distinct pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, including a high pKa , prolonged systemic exposure, and sustained hypochlorhydria, that may have implications beyond gastric acid suppression for anticancer drug interactions and the tumor microenvironment. METHODS: We critically reviewed preclinical and clinical literature to evaluate vonoprazan's potential effects across two proposed biological axes: the intracellular/organelle axis, involving potential lysosomal drug sequestration, pH regulation, autophagy, and apop

Refining biopsy strategies stratified by PI-RADS score in men: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men globally. Advances in diagnostic techniques, particularly multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System, have enhanced detection precision. However, optimal biopsy strategies for lesions with Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System scores of 3-5 remain uncertain. Here we show that saturation targeted biopsy and ipsilateral systematic biopsy combined with targeted biopsy achieve comparable detection rates of clinically significant prostate cancer to the combined systematic and targeted bio

Transportable inference using target population summary statistics under covariate shift.

Transporting findings from a study population to a target population is central to evidence-based decision-making in real-world settings. Most existing methods require individual-level data from both populations to account for covariate shift. However, privacy regulations and data-sharing constraints often preclude access to such data from the target population, leaving only covariate summaries available for analysis. In this paper, we develop transportability methods that enable valid inference using source individual-level data and target covariate summaries. First, we apply entropy balancin
