Finite Element Analysis of Normal and Dysplastic Hip Joints in Children.

From a surgical point of view, quantification cannot always be achieved in the developmental deformity in hip joints, but finite element analysis can be a helpful tool to compare normal joint architecture with a dysplastic counterpart. CT scans from the normal right hip of an 8-year-old boy and the dysplastic left hip of a 12-year-old girl were used to construct our geometric models. In a three-dimensional model construction, distinctions were made between the cortical bone, trabecular bone, cartilage, and contact nonlinearities of the hip joint. The mathematical model incorporated the conside

A biomechanical comparison between cement packing combined with extra fixation and three-dimensional printed strut-type prosthetic reconstruction for giant cell tumor of bone in distal femur.

BACKGROUND: The most common reconstruction method for bone defects caused by giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is cement packing combined with subchondral bone grafting and extra fixation. However, this method has several limitations involving bone cement and bone graft, which may lead to poor prognosis and joint function. A titanium-based 3D-printed strut-type prosthesis, featured with excellent biocompatibility and osseointegration ability, was developed for this bone defect in our institution. The goal of this study is to comparatively analyze the biomechanical performance of reconstruction m

Stem Cells Promote the Regeneration of Knee Joint Degenerative Bone and Articular Cartilage.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cartilage damage has a certain ability to spontaneously repair, but the repaired tissue often shows the phenomenon of cartilage terminal differentiation, which causes irreversible damage to its structure and function and seriously affects the quality of life and work of patients. It is of great significance to study the problems encountered in the process of cartilage damage repair. This article mainly studied stem cells to promote the regeneration of knee joint degenerative bone articular cartilage. First, the animal articular cartilage defect is modeled, 10 ml of animal venous blood is drawn

Case Report: Diagnosis of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IVA With Compound Heterozygous Galactosamine-6 Sulfatase Variants and Biopsy of Replaced Femoral Heads.

INTRODUCTION: Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IVA (MPS IVA) or Morquio A Syndrome, is a rare metabolic disorder caused by compromised galactosamine-6 sulfatase (GALNS) encoded by GALNS gene (NM_000512.5), leading to keratin sulfate (KS), and chondroitin-6-sulfate accumulation in various organs. We present a 17-year-old woman with progressive bilateral hip pain and radiographic evidence of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. METHODS: Diagnosis of MPS IVA was made based on whole-exome sequencing (WES) of blood samples collected from the patient and family members, high urinary glycosaminoglycan excretion,

The value of the glenohumeral joint cross-sectional area as a morphological parameter of glenohumeral osteoarthritis.

Glenohumeral joint (GHJ) space narrowing has been demonstrated to be an important morphologic parameter of glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHO). However, the morphology of GHJ space is irregular because of degeneration of subchondral bone and articular cartilage. Thus, we devised GHJ cartilage cross-sectional area (GHJCCSA) as a new diagnostic morphological parameter to assess the irregular morphologic change of GHJ. GHJ samples were acquired from 33 patients with GHO and from 33 normal controls without evidence of GHO based on shoulder magnetic resonance imaging. T2-weighted coronal MRIs were co

Estimating the Risk for Secondary Cancer After Targeted α-Therapy with 211At Intraperitoneal Radioimmunotherapy.

Intraperitoneal 211At-based targeted α-therapy (TAT) may hold great promise as an adjuvant therapy after surgery and chemotherapy in epithelial ovarian cancer to eradicate any remaining undetectable disease. This implies that it will also be delivered to patients possibly already cured by the primary treatment. An estimate of long-term risks is therefore sought to determine whether the treatment is justified. Methods: Baseline data for risk estimates of α-particle irradiation were collected from published studies on excess cancer induction and mortality for subjects exposed to either 224Ra tre

Osteoarthritic Subchondral Bone Release Exosomes That Promote Cartilage Degeneration.

Altered subchondral bone and articular cartilage interactions have been implicated in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA); however, the mechanisms remain unknown. Exosomes are membrane-derived vesicles that have recently been recognized as important mediators of intercellular communication. Herein, we investigated if OA subchondral bone derived exosomes alter transcriptional and bioenergetic signatures of chondrocytes. Exosomes were isolated and purified from osteoblasts of nonsclerotic or sclerotic zones of human OA subchondral bone and their role on the articular cartilage chondrocytes w

Early changes in osteochondral tissues in a rabbit model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

Concurrent osteoarthritic (OA) manifestations in bone and cartilage are poorly known. To shed light on this issue, this study aims to investigate changes in subchondral bone and articular cartilage at two time points after anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) in a rabbit model. 2 (N = 16) and 8 (N = 10) weeks after ACLT, the subchondral bone structure, cartilage thickness, Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) score, fixed charged density (FCD), and collagen orientation angle were analyzed. OA related changes were evaluated by comparing the ACLT to the contralateral (C

Biomechanically Tunable Nano-Silica/P-HEMA Structural Hydrogels for Bone Scaffolding.

Innovative tissue engineering biomimetic hydrogels based on hydrophilic polymers have been investigated for their physical and mechanical properties. 5% to 25% by volume loading PHEMA-nanosilica glassy hybrid samples were equilibrated at 37 °C in aqueous physiological isotonic and hypotonic saline solutions (0.15 and 0.05 M NaCl) simulating two limiting possible compositions of physiological extracellular fluids. The glassy and hydrated hybrid materials were characterized by both dynamo-mechanical properties and equilibrium absorptions in the two physiological-like aqueous solutions. The mecha

Changes in bone density, intraosseous pressure of distal femoral articular cartilage and subchondral bone after proximal femoral medullary cavity cement filling in rabbits.

Bone cement is widely used, particularly in hip replacements, but the potential clinical complications of its use have been largely unrecognized. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of bone cement in the proximal femoral medullary cavity (PFMC) on bone mineral density (BMD), intraosseous pressure (IOP), articular cartilage and subchondral bone in the distal femurs of rabbits. A total of 32 New Zealand white rabbits were randomly numbered and the left hind limb of the odd-numbered rabbits and the right hind limb of the even numbered rabbits were selected as the exper

Giant Cell Tumor of the Distal Radius: Wide Resection, Ulna Translocation With Wrist Arthrodesis.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a locally aggressive neoplasm and usually managed with extended curettage and adjuvant therapy, which is associated with reduced risk of recurrence. The juxta-articular distal radius giant cell tumor is challenging due to the destruction of subchondral bone and articular cartilage, making it difficult to salvage the wrist joint anatomy and function. Various methods described include wide resection and reconstruction of allograft or centralization of the ulna with wrist arthrodesis. We present the functional outcome of distal end radius GCT, which was succe

Femoral neck rotational osteotomy: a modified method for treating necrotic femoral heads with large and laterally located lesions.

In this study, we retrospectively investigated the short-term outcome of femoral neck rotational osteotomy (FNRO) for treating necrotic femoral heads with large and laterally located lesions. Twelve necrotic femoral heads (ARCO stage II or III) with an average Kerboul angle of 210° underwent FNRO through surgical hip dislocation. By circumferential release of capsule and retinaculum, femoral neck osteotomy was performed at the base of femoral neck just 1.5 cm above lesser trochanter. The severed femoral neck was rotated with a mean angle of 120.4° and fixed with a mean varus angulation of 10.2

Multiple targets identified with genome wide profiling of small RNA and mRNA expression are linked to fracture healing in mice.

Long-bone fracture is a common injury and its healing process at the fracture site involves several overlapping phases, including inflammation, migration of mesenchymal progenitors into the fracture site, endochondral ossification, angiogenesis and finally bone remodelling. Increasing evidence shows that small noncoding RNAs are important regulators of chondrogenesis, osteogenesis and fracture healing. MicroRNAs are small single-stranded, non-coding RNA-molecules intervening in most physiological and biological processes, including fracture healing. Angiogenin-cleaved 5' tRNA halves, also call

Carbon-Based Nanomaterials for Bone and Cartilage Regeneration: A Review.

As the main load-bearing structure in the human body, bone and cartilage are susceptible to damage in sports and other activities. The repair and regeneration of bone and articular cartilage have been extensively studied in the past decades. Traditional approaches have been widely applied in clinical practice, but the effect varies from person to person and may cause side effects. With the rapid development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, various biomaterials show great potential in the regeneration of bone and cartilage. Carbon-based nanomaterials are solid materials with dif

Comparison of bone and articular cartilage changes in osteoarthritis: a micro-computed tomography and histological study of surgically and chemically induced osteoarthritic rabbit models.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifaceted condition that affects both the subchondral bones and the articular cartilage. Animal models are widely used as an effective supplement and simulation for human OA studies in investigating disease mechanisms and pathophysiology. This study is aimed to evaluate the temporal changes of bone and cartilage in surgically and chemically induced osteoarthritis using micro-computed tomography and histology. METHODS: Thirty rabbits underwent either anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) procedure or injected intraarticularly with monosodium iodo
