The four maxillary incisors and two maxillary premolars of a 25-year-old male patient were used to study epithelial and connective tissue attachment 67 days and 164 days after flap surgery and cutting of an horizontal intradentinal groove near the buccal cervical region. Three teeth were topically conditioned for 3 minutes with citric acid pH = 1. The three other teeth were used as controls. The histologic examination was carried out in double-blind conditions; the examiners did not know which specimens were acid treated until the end of the study. Two of the three cases treated with citric ac

A group of 21 adults patients with soft tissues sarcomas of the extremities were studied by CT. CT was a diagnostic procedure in only one case. However it has always permitted a precise local work-up particularly in demonstrating the vasculo-nervous connections of the lesions. The place of CT with regard to the other radiological procedures is discussed. by its contribution to the locoregional and general pretherapeutic work-up and to a better determination of radiotherapeutical dosimetry, CT appears to have an up standing place in the staging and the follow-up of soft tissues sarcomas.

The general question of the influence of fracture stability on bone healing remains unanswered and has important bearing on fracture stabilization by external fixation. The stiffness of an external fixator is dependent on pin placement and frame orientation. These parameters are under the surgeon's control, within limits set by soft tissue injury and fixator design. Fixator configuration parameters include common fragment pin separation, common fragment pin angle, common fragment pin number, effective pin length, use of transfixing pins versus half-pins, and use of two versus three connecting

We performed preoperative arteriography and postamputation dissection on a human limb having complete tibial aplasia and preaxial polydactyly. The tibia was replaced by a tendinous band with an attached connective tissue mass. In the leg, the muscles were normal. Muscles usually arising from the tibia arose from the tendinous band, Intrinsic muscles of the foot were absent where skeletal elements were absent and there were supernumerary muscles where there were supernumerary skeletal elements. The tendinous insertions of the muscles that originated in the leg followed the skeletal pattern of t

Orthodontic closure in cases of aplasia as also in patients with spaces of other genesis is often associated with problems of relapse. In this study ten patients were treated orthodontically in order to close unacceptable interdental spaces. Five patients had paired aplasia. The remaining five patients had interdental spaces of different genesis. Supra-crestal connective tissue fibres were surgically removed in all patients but only on one side of the jaw in the children with paired aplasia. The non-operated side of these children served as a control side. The stability of the orthodontic trea

The classical symptoms of malabsorption syndrome are diarrhea, steatorrhea, weight loss, and fatigue. Tetany, ecchymosis, anorexia, bone pain, pallor, muscle wasting, hyperpigmentation, apathy, digital clubbing, abdominal distention which contrasts in view of the reduced common statement are other signs of malabsorption. Long before the onset of these symptoms there may be a disinterest in regular daily activities often associated with the passage of three soft stools per day and with the remarkable sign of difficulties in flushing bulky stools. Anamnesia, clinical examination in connection wi

In 3 oxen, 24 deer, 40 common hares and 27 rabbits, the laryngeal cartilages, freed from soft tissue, were examined roentgenologically for ossification, and compared with the well-known ossification pattern of the human thyroid cartilage. In the human, the thyroid cartilage ossifies in four preferential directions: horizontal-caudal, vertical-lateral, vertical-median, and obliquely tongue-shaped; in cattle ossification in the three directions: horizontal-caudal, vertical-median, and vertical-lateral; and in the deer in two directions: median-concentric and vertical-lateral. Local corticosteroid injections are a relatively safe and effective adjunct in managing rheumatoid arthritis, other connective tissue arthropathies, and soft tissue rheumatism. Rheumatoid synovitis may be suppressed for three months or longer using relatively insoluble microcrystalline preparations. No convincing evidence exists, however, that joint erosive changes are retarded, and steroid injections should be considered ancillary to rest, physical therapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, and disease modifying antirheumatic drugs. The few controlled studies in hip and knee osteoarthrit

Titanium implants were allowed to penetrate the skin of the upper arm of 8 human volunteers in an attempt to investigate the conditions for a permanent implant transcutaneous passage. If a construction was used that restricted the skin movements around the implant no inflammatory or other adverse soft tissue effects were noted for follow-up periods of 7-25 months. In another clinical investigation of 4 patients with hearing impairment, titanium implants were firmly anchored in the temporal bone, allowed to penetrate the skin and external hearing aids were directly attached. These transcutaneou

The main force which muscles, tendons and ligaments resist is tension. A single maximal tensile force will cause disruption of the tissue and an acute injury. Cyclic submaximal forces will cause adaptation if sufficient time is given for healing, and breakdown in the forces are applied over too short a period of time. The adaptive response is rate-limited. It is affected by the magnitude of the force and other factors.

As an introduction statements from literature and own experience are used to show and evaluate the present possibilities for the coverage of skin and soft tissue defects. As a routine operation the stemmed cross-leg flap is further on indicated on the lower leg. For the immobilisation of the legs wer use the fixateur externe. This kind of fixation has got advantages compared to plaster casts: optimal position of the two lower legs to each other, a local and general handling of the nursing with only few problems and a subjective relief for the patient. Moreover, flaps and transplant base can be

The aim of this study was to localize alpha 1-antitrypsin, ferritin, and lysozyme by means of the indirect immunoperoxidase technique and to evaluate the significance of these antigens as markers of histiocytic differentiation in tumors of a supposed dual fibroblastic-histiocytic origin. The series comprised 31 malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) of the pleomorphic, spindle cell, and myxoid types, four cutaneous fibrous histiocytomas, and four atypical fibroxanthomas, four dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, and two osteoclastomas of bone. For comparison, 15 soft tissue sarcomas of various othe

Proteins containing gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) are present in subcutaneous calcifications of adults with dermatomyositis or scleroderma. Sixteen children with juvenile dermatomyositis, including 7 with subcutaneous calcifications, were studied to determine if abnormal synthesis or turnover of Gla-containing proteins occurred. All study children had increased excretion of the amino acid that was greater than that of age- and sex-matched controls. Patients who had juvenile dermatomyositis with calcifications had a 3-fold increase in Gla excretion, and those without calcinosis had a 2-fold

The authors undertake a general review of the association between hypophosphoraemia and connective tissue tumour, based upon three personal cases and 27 cases of benign connective tissue tumours, as well as cases of hypophosphoraemia related to malignant tumours or to diffuse dysplasia of connective tissue origin, collected from the literature. This syndrome is distinguished from hypophosphoraemia induced by other tumours (myeloma, carcinoma of the prostate) which are based upon different mechanisms. Hypophosphoraemia, associated with a fall in plasma levels of 1-25 (OH)2 D3 by inhibition of r

Until April 1981 malignant soft tissue sarcomas were registered from 238 patients. Rhabdomyosarcoma was the most common tumor (115/238 = 48.3%). The embryonal subtype was predominantly seen among the rhabdomyosarcomas (83/115 = 72.2%). Rhabdomyosarcomas were localized most frequently in the head and neck area (40/115 = 34.8%), followed by genitourinary system (15/115), pelvis soft tissue (12), abdomen (10) and extremities (10). Non-rhabdomyosarcomatous soft tissue sarcomas (123/238 = 51.7%) were synovial sarcomas (20 = 8.4%), fibrosarcomas including spindle cell sarcoma (17 = 7.4%), leiomyosar

Tumors of extramedullary hematopoiesis occasionally occur in long-standing cases of agnogenic myeloid metaplasia (AMM) and resemble hypercellular marrow in a connective tissue stroma. Rarely, this type of tumor mass is markedly fibrous and may pose diagnostic difficulty, especially when there is only limited knowledge of a patient's clinical history. The authors reports two cases of AMM with such a fibrous hematopoietic tumor, occurring in one patient as a pelvic mass and in another as lymphadenopathy and skin nodules. A review of the literature revealed that fibrous hematopoietic tumors assoc

A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the lung is reported. The tumour margin was well circumscribed, showing an expanding border and no capsule. The main part of the tumour was composed of spindle-shaped fibroblast-like cells arranged in broad fascicles with a partially storiform pattern. Other parts of the tumour were arranged in a haphazard pattern, containing many mononucleated and multinucleated giant cells. Ultrastructurally six different cell types were encountered. The dominant type was a fibroblast-like cell; also present were many giant cells and some histiocyte-like cells, tog

Fibronectin in human solid tumors was studied by indirect immunofluorescence staining of biopsy material. Altogether 73 tumors were examined, comprising 12 sarcomas, 3 melanomas 1 reticulum cell sarcoma, 39 carcinomas, 6 benign soft-tissue tumors and 12 benign epithelial tumors. In all sarcomas the individual tumor cells were surrounded by a network of fibronectin which was continuous with the stroma. The distribution of fibronectin was similar in the benign soft-tissue tumors. In contrast, no fibronectin was detected in the individual carcinoma cells or in their periphery. However, the reacti

Due to physiological structure of most of the soft biological tissues, measurable stresses develop after the specimen has been stretched to many hundreds of percent of its relaxed length. Therefore, the nonlinear stress-strain relations developed for vulcanized rubber cannot be applied to soft tissues, which are constitutionally much more nonlinear than other engineering materials. In this article, using two different elastic models proposed for elastic soft tissues, simple elongation of a cylindrical bar and the inflation of a spherical thick shell, which is deemed to be a model for a left ve

1. Pig synovium in organ culture produces material which induces living cartilage to resorb its proteoglycan in vitro. 2. The bioassay for this material was to measure glycosaminoglycan released from explants of bovine nasal-septal cartilage cultured for 8 days. The performance of the assay was greatly improved by adding cortisol succinate (0.1mug/ml). This decreased the release of glycosaminoglycan from unstimulated cartilage without inhibiting its response to catabolic factors from the synovium. 3. By using this improved assay it was shown that 90% of the active materials in synovial culture
