Revisiting the anatomy of the retroperitoneum and renal fascia. Aspects applied to radiology, laparoscopic and robotic surgery - a narrative review.

This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the anatomy of the retroperitoneal and abdominal fascias. We analyzed papers published in the past 70 years in the databases of Pubmed, Embase and Scielo. We excluded case reports, editorials and opinions of specialists. Studies were excluded if they lacked clear anatomical descriptions of the fascias, if full-text access was unavailable, or if they were published in languages other than Portuguese, English, or Spanish. This narrative review addresses the anatomical integration, surgical techniques, and functional importance of the fascia

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the greater omentum in a 7-year-old girl.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare neoplasm. Its preferred location is intrathoracic; there are few reports of intra-abdominal involvement, where it may affect the mesentery and retroperitoneum. A 7-year-old girl was brought in for evaluation due to fever, nonspecific lower abdominal pain, fatigue, and progressive weight loss. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, thrombocytosis, and elevated CRP. An abdominal ultrasound showed a hypoechoic mass with well-defined borders and heterogeneous content, measuring approximately 67 × 52 × 79 mm. Complete excision was performed via laparotomy. It

Solitary splenosis mimicking retroperitoneal tumor: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Splenosis is a rare benign disorder characterized by autotransplantation of splenic tissue after splenic trauma or splenectomy. Isolated retroperitoneal splenosis is extremely uncommon and can be easily misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm, which may lead to unnecessary surgical procedures. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman with a history of traumatic total splenectomy 6 years earlier was admitted with acute right upper abdominal pain. Imaging examinations showed cholecystolithiasis, choledocholithiasis, and a 2.2 cm solid mass in the right retroperitoneum at the upper pole

Peritoneal disseminations from appendiceal vs. colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma. An Italian multicentric comparative study.

BACKGROUND: We compared baseline characteristics, outcomes and patterns of failure between patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) for peritoneal disseminations from appendiceal (MACA) or colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma (MCRC), in order to assess clinical and prognostical differences. METHODS: Prospectively collected data for 402 patients treated for MACA (n = 218) or MCRC (n = 184) in 17 Italian centers were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Colorectal origin was associated with lower peritoneal cancer index (PCI) (P < 0.001),

Extrapulmonary Retroperitoneal Lymphangioleiomyomatosis Associated With Endosalpingiosis: A Case Report.

BackgroundLymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is an uncommon multisystem disorder characterized by proliferation of perivascular epithelioid cells and classified within the perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) family. Although classically involving the lung, extrapulmonary manifestations have been documented, most frequently within the retroperitoneum and abdominopelvic lymphatics. Endosalpingiosis is a benign Müllerian lesion defined by the presence of ectopic glands lined by fallopian tube-type ciliated epithelium in the absence of accompanying endometrial-type stroma. The coexistence of

Laparoscopic resection of a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are rare, and preoperative diagnosis can be challenging, particularly when other abdominal cystic diseases coexist. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), which is characterized by multiple cystic formations, can complicate both differential diagnosis and surgical planning. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old man with ADPKD and chronic renal failure was referred to our hospital following a positive fecal occult blood test during an evaluation for anemia. Colonoscopy revealed a large submucosal tumor-like elevation

Duodenum inversum presenting with intestinal obstruction in a 40-day-old infant: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Duodenum inversum is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormal course of the duodenum with preservation of a normally positioned duodenojejunal junction. Clinical presentation is highly variable, ranging from incidental findings to symptoms of upper gastrointestinal obstruction. Due to its rarity, diagnosis and management remain challenging, particularly in pediatric patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 40-day-old female infant presenting with recurrent postprandial vomiting and poor weight gain since the first days of life. Initial clinical, metabolic

From Leiomyoma to Smooth Muscle Tumor of Uncertain Malignant Potential: A Rare Recurrent Right Retroperitoneal Mass in a Young Male.

Smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that exhibit histopathological features intermediate between benign leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma. STUMP is overwhelmingly a disease of the uterus in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women; extra-uterine STUMPs are exceedingly uncommon, and involvement of the retroperitoneum in a male patient is exceptionally rare, with only a handful of cases described in the literature to date. We report a unique case of a young male who initially underwent excision of a retroperitoneal leiomyoma and subsequently dev

Pyelolymphatic backflow demonstrated on computed tomography urography in acute ureteric obstruction.

A man in his early 40s presented with acute right flank pain, vomiting and dysuria. Ultrasonography demonstrated an obstructing right upper ureteric calculus with a contralateral renal calculus. CT urography revealed fine, serpiginous contrast-opacified tubular channels extending from the right renal pelvis into the retroperitoneum without evidence of urinoma. Delayed excretory phase imaging demonstrated convergence towards the para-aortic region, consistent with pyelolymphatic backflow rather than collecting system rupture. The imaging pattern reflected markedly elevated intrarenal pressure a

Concomitant Hydatid Disease of the Lower Extremity and Retroperitoneum: A Case Report of Two Rare Locations.

Cystic echinococcosis is an endemic parasitic disease in Morocco, characterized by cystic lesions, most commonly in the liver or lungs, with lesions in other locations being less common. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman presenting with chronic pain and swelling in her left thigh. An ultrasound of the thigh revealed a multilocular mass located on the posteromedial aspect of the thigh. An MRI of the left thigh showed a multilocular subfascial cystic mass containing multiple fluid-filled vesicles and a sinuous hypointense membrane (serpent sign). An MRI of the thoracolumbar spine and an

Incidental discovery of a massive primary retroperitoneal serous cystadenoma following trauma.

A woman in her 70s presented with severe abdominal pain following a mechanical fall. A CT of the abdomen revealed a massive cystic lesion with evidence of rupture, while MRI localised the lesion to the left retroperitoneum; however, its aetiology remained unclear. She underwent laparotomy with extensive adhesiolysis and excision of a large multiloculated retroperitoneal cyst containing approximately 6500 mL of serous and haemorrhagic fluid. Histopathological examination demonstrated a benign serous cystadenoma lined by ciliated serous epithelium with tubal metaplasia and no evidence of atypia.

Metastatic Retroperitoneal Rhabdomyosarcoma in a Child: A Case Report Highlighting the Role of Imaging in Diagnosis, Staging, and Follow-Up.

Retroperitoneal masses in children encompass a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant tumors with a largely nonspecific clinical presentation. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a soft tissue sarcoma that uncommonly arises primarily in the retroperitoneum, a site associated with a comparatively unfavorable prognosis related to delayed diagnosis, large tumor volume at presentation, and frequent invasion of adjacent vascular and digestive structures. We report the case of a five-year-eight-month-old boy who presented with a one-month history of progressive abdominal distension and left lower limb ed

Clinicopathological Spectrum of Head and Neck Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: A Three-case Series.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the ability of organisms that infect the catheterized urinary tract to migrate over the surfaces of Foley catheters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a simple laboratory model, organisms were challenged to migrate across sections of hydrogel-coated latex, hydrogel/silver-coated latex, silicone-coated latex and all-silicone catheters. The sections (1 cm long) were placed as bridges in channels between blocks of agar and the test organisms inoculated onto the agar adjacent to one side of each bridge. The plates were incubated at 37 degrees C for 24 h and examined for growth of th

Difficult Diagnosis of Interdigitating Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Retroperitoneum: A Case Report and A Brief Review of the Literature.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm classified within the M-group of malignant histiocytoses. Its diagnosis poses a significant challenge. This article aims to describe a rare clinical case of IDCS and to illustrate the differential diagnostic process undertaken by the authors in establishing this diagnosis. A 60-year-old woman was admitted for the resection of a retroperitoneal mass discovered via CT scan. Morphological examination revealed a 7.5×5.5×5.0 cm tumor, encapsulated by a thin fibrous capsule. The tumor was composed of 90-95% inflammatory

Optimizing outcomes and accessibility of matched sibling donor transplant for transfusion dependent thalassemia in LMICs.

Severe thalassemia is a life-threatening condition common in many low and middle-income countries. While bone marrow transplantation (BMT) offers a curative option, its accessibility remains limited due to cost and complexity. This study describes a simplified approach to BMT for hemoglobinopathies which is based on relatively common and inexpensive medicines. This study included 176 paediatric patients with transfusion dependent thalassemia who received a matched sibling bone marrow transplant between February 2022 and November 2025 across several centers in Asia and the Middle East. A simpli
