Nasal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma: a rare disease in a rare location-a review article with a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor of endothelial origin that occurs during the first decade of life. It is locally aggressive, with a tendency for local invasion and spread to regional lymph nodes. It presents as tender, expanding plaques, nodules, papules, or telangiectasias and is most commonly located in the retroperitoneum and skin; however, involvement of the head and neck region is uncommon. Herein, we report an unusual case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in a 59-year-old woman who presented with a several-month history of right-sided nasal obstruction and epis

Extensive necrotizing fasciitis of the thoracic wall and retroperitoneum following penetrating trauma: A case report of severe septic shock and multistage surgical management.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the thoracic wall with retroperitoneal extension is an exceptionally rare and life-threatening condition. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality due to its rapid progression, diagnostic difficulty, and complex surgical requirements. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy male developed fulminant NF following minor penetrating thoracic trauma. He presented with septic shock, leukocytosis (WBC 54,000/μL), and lactic acidosis. Imaging revealed gas-forming infection extending from the thoracic fascia into the retroperitoneum. The LRINEC sco

Carbon ion radiotherapy for unresectable primary or recurrent soft tissue sarcomas: long-term outcomes based on the local effect model.

BACKGROUND: The application of carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for unresectable primary or recurrent soft tissue sarcoma (STS) remains controversial and existing data are limited. We herein present our institutional experience with CIRT for unresectable primary or recurrent STS. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of CIRT in unresectable primary or recurrent STS patients at our center. We assessed the 4-and 5-year local control (LC), overall survival (OS), distant metastasis free survival (DMFS), progression free survival (PFS), as well as acute and late toxicities. Additionally

Clinical analysis and prognostic factors in children with neuroblastoma-associated opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The long-term neurological outcomes for children diagnosed with neuroblastoma associated with Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome (NB-OMS) are not well characterized, primarily due to the infrequency of the condition. This multicenter study sought to evaluate the rate of neurological recovery and the long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae within this patient population. METHODS: A retrospective study at nine Chinese medical centers (January 2015 - January 2025) involved 39 children with NB-OMS. Researchers gathered data on demographics, clinical presentation, tumor traits, treatment, and

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma presenting with ascites as the initial clinical manifestation: a case report and literature review.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) is a high-grade soft tissue sarcoma predominantly arising in the retroperitoneum, characterized by an insidious clinical course. This study reports a 63-year-old female patient who presented with abdominal distension and decreased appetite, without other systemic complaints. Malignant tumor cells were identified in both ascitic smears and cell blocks. Combined with immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, the findings were consistent with sarcoma cells. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of the tissue biopsy revealed clustered amplification of mo

Standardized laparoscopic approach for retroperitoneal tumors: a single-center preliminary experience.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal tumors are rare and heterogeneous lesions, and their surgical management remains challenging. Although laparoscopic techniques are increasingly adopted in abdominal surgery, a standardized minimally invasive approach for retroperitoneal pathology has not yet been clearly defined. The present study reports our preliminary single-center experience with a standardized laparoscopic management of retroperitoneal tumors. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 36 patients treated for retroperitoneal tumors between 2017 and 2022. Patients were selected for a laparoscopic app

Synchronous Ectopic Adrenal Rhabdomyosarcoma and Ipsilateral Cystic Nephroma Revealing a Diagnosis of DICER1-Related Tumor Predisposition: A Case Report.

DICER1-related tumor predisposition (DRTP) results from loss-of-function germline variants that predispose patients to numerous benign and malignant tumors. Cystic nephromas are among the most common neoplasms in patients with DRTP; however, there are no reports of rhabdomyosarcoma from adrenal tissue in children with DRTP. We present a case of a 30-month-old child with simultaneous cystic nephroma and rhabdomyosarcoma from ectopic adrenal tissue. He initially presented with chronic abdominal pain and poor weight gain. CT imaging demonstrated a large mass extending from the left kidney as well

Report of a case of renal hilum Castleman disease complicated with Paget's disease of the breast.

Renal hilar Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by non-specific radiological manifestations. It is easily misdiagnosed as primary renal or adrenal malignant tumors in clinical practice, which may consequently lead to unnecessary radical nephrectomy. A 51-year-old female with a history of right breast cancer treated with mastectomy and adjuvant endocrine therapy 7 years prior presented with right nipple erosion. Biopsy confirmed Paget's disease, and preoperative staging with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) incidentally revealed a solitary soft-tissu

A systematic imaging approach to pathology within the retroperitoneal space.

Retroperitoneal diseases encompass a broad and heterogeneous spectrum, ranging from benign conditions to aggressive malignancies. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific, and physical examination is limited by the deep location of the retroperitoneum. Consequently, cross-sectional imaging-primarily computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-is central to detection, characterization, and staging, playing a key role in guiding management and surgical planning. Imaging evaluation is challenging due to overlapping appearances, difficulty determining the site of origin and ext

Targeted Therapy in Erdheim-Chester Disease: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare, aggressive non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by multisystem infiltration of histiocytes. It commonly affects middle-aged men and is driven by acquired mutations in the MAPK signaling pathway. This essential cellular pathway relays extracellular signals to the nucleus and regulates cell proliferation and survival. We report the case of a 39-year-old male who presented with progressive, severe left-sided frontal and temporal headaches. Imaging revealed a symptomatic craniocervical mass, a nonsecreting pituitary lesion, and bilateral perinephric so

Sarcomatoid adrenocortical carcinoma with aggressive disease course: a rare case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomatoid Adrenocortical Carcinoma (SAC) is an extremely rare, highly aggressive, and poorly differentiated subtype of Adrenocortical Carcinoma (ACC). To date, only 38 cases have been reported worldwide. No standardized clinical diagnosis and treatment protocols have been established, and the prognosis of affected patients is extremely poor. This study reports a case of SAC in a 60-year-old female patient presenting with an abdominal mass, aiming to analyze the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment features of this rare tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old fema

Uterine angiomyolipoma presenting as a rapidly enlarging retroperitoneal mass in the early postpartum period.

Uterine angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are exceptionally rare benign mesenchymal tumors that can closely mimic malignant uterine or retroperitoneal neoplasms when large or highly vascular. We describe the case of a healthy 29-year-old postpartum woman who presented with acute abdominal pain three months after delivery and was found to have a rapidly enlarging 10-cm hypervascular mass arising from the right uterine cornua with extension into the retroperitoneum. The imaging appearance and interval growth were highly concerning for a retroperitoneal sarcoma. She underwent diagnostic laparoscopy, which w

Giant Cell Tumor of the Lumbar Spine with Large Retroperitoneal Extension and Vascular Attachment.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumors (GCTs) of the bone, though typically benign and found at the ends of long bones, are rare in the lumbar spine. Despite their benign nature, they can exhibit local aggressiveness and cause pathological fractures and compression. The treatment is individualized, considering anatomical localization, tumor extension, and clinical symptoms. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 41-year-old female, a genuinely unique instance of a GCT of the L4 body extending into the retroperitoneum. This rarity in itself is a point of interest. The patient underwent an initial poster

Multidisciplinary Surgical Approach to a Locally Advanced Leiomyosarcoma of the Right External Iliac Vein.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcomas are rare mesenchymal tumors accounting for less than 1% of all cancers, originating intra-abdominally or retroperitoneally in 40% of cases.1 Leiomyosarcomas are among the most common retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS), with surgery as primary treatment option whenever an R0 resection is feasible.2 Taken into account the concept of histology-guided surgery for RPS, surgery for leiomyosarcomas often does not require wide resections, allowing preservation of adjacent organs when not directly infiltrated.3 Nevertheless, high-grade leiomyosarcomas of abdominal major ves
